Why I don't understand YouTube: A middle-aged woman writes

freethinker101

Yeah I'm the same, 44 and just don't get why my son would rather watch someone play Minecraft than play it himself. Often in my house I am quoted as saying "Stop watching people play games and do it yourself"
A friend who I was working with reckons that physiologically you get a similar amount of satisfaction watching other people achieve as you do your self . This could tie into the same idea as people enjoying sports on TV that they never play themselves. Still I don't get it! Maybe if my son had grown up in the time when I did where the only access you had to games was at your local arcade or whatever the family room of the pub and it cost you 10p for the pleasure he might be more inclined to value the games he has. As I always say in my day you got the money your parents gave you and once your done your done! Maybe then he would appreciate how lucky he is to be able to access games and die and play as many times as he likes.

Far Cry 2's single-minded vision deserves to be remembered

freethinker101

I left about a six month gap between starting and finishing Far Cry 2 and in the end I gave up on driving and just walked everywhere to avoid all the re-spawning camps. In the end I loved the game faults and all! Also it was of the friendliest multiplayer's I've ever played.

Far Cry 5 review - a competent yet conflicted open worlder

freethinker101

I'm still interested but doubt I'll get to it before the summer. For me the series hasn't scaled new heights since 3. I remember quite early on in the game I took down one of the outposts with arrow and knife, without anyone seeing me or raising an alarm and I got 5 trophies in one go. I knew then I would platinum this game. It's a shame as I had high hopes for this one with it's setting and positive previews!

Ready Player One film review - garish and nostalgic, but Spielberg gets games

freethinker101

The more I read the less I care. I enjoyed the book a great deal and I just feel like the producers etc missed the point. Still I'm sure it'll be a fun ride, just one that leaves you with little to talk about after. Spielberg is a brilliant director but perhaps Ready Player One needed a more cynical hand guiding it!

There is a brilliant article on Kokatu about how hecan no longer enjoy Burnout being a car owner now! Personally Revenge was the series pinnacle for me, and while it's regarded as an essential I feel the many hours I put into my PS3 version will make up for the fact that I wont be buying again!

@Kalime I see your point but upon further investigation. Montana has a very high proportion of alien sightings and abductions. In 2013 a hoax that a zombie attack was happening was taken seriously and I imagine Vietnam and the Gulf Wars will play a part in the main game!

I wish Black Flag had this as an option. There was a bug that meant if you were offline, or the game was updating while a trophy was earned it didn't ping, which left me with a couple of chapter trophies and other grindy ones like destroying all naval forts, not on my list.

Burnout Paradise HD reports gather pace

freethinker101

@Chromanin exactly what I was thinking, it was on 360 & PS3 and as I remember it ran at 1080p. Personally I'd rather see HD versions of 3 and 4. With takedown being my favourite of the series! I didn't really get on with the openworld of paradise, although I played it to death while lamenting the demise of split screen play!

freethinker101

My feelings are if your paying for a boxed title then anything available to purchase your way through the game must be available through grind. The only reason I can see that EA felt thier plan was a good move was so as to break even. I'm sure once Disney take thier cut and the Devs, etc, etc have been paid. I doubt they make much on the endeavour. Even if it sold 10 -'20 million units.

Passing this on is one of my biggest regrets, and I wish I'd given the Following a bit more time. freethinker101

@williamarthurfenton I'm disappointed its not on my favoured platform either. That however is Sega, Sony and the other publishers who didn't want to publish Bayonetta 2 fault. The series would be dead if Nintendo hadn't jumped in and saved it! Although if you really want some Platinum based fun try Nier on PS4, or the Transformer game that was awesome dodge, slow down time, attack based fun!

Detroit: Become Human under fire for controversial domestic abuse scene

freethinker101

I kind of lost interest as soon as I saw the words Sun & Mail. It's no more than a slow news day. In context it's a scene in a game that will be an 18 and therefore an adults choice if they play it. Child abuse has been explored in film, TV and theatre. Songs have been written about it so why can't games explore it..... Oh they already have!. I didn't see this kind of furore of Papo & Yo or Gone Home. Then again they were not big budget AAA titles for a major publisher!

The slow disappearing act of Demon's Souls

freethinker101

Online or off this game will always be a masterpiece and an example of how Sony underestimated how popular this game would be. I waited 3 weeks for my Asian copy and spent countless hours on the first level alone, so pleased was I with the EU release I got that as well as the package was so generous. For me until Bloodbourne none of the games that followed could beat demons soul for its scale and beauty. Hopefully a way to preserve its online features could be found. Possibly even a PS4 remaster!

I heard it being discussed on Radio 4 today and Peter White exclaimed that it could take over 40 hours of play to unlock certain content. TBH I don't think 40 hours is a bad amount of time to put in. I've lost more on all the souls games, Bloodbourne and Nier and still have loads left to unlock on all of them. While I don't agree with pay to win shouldn't the best stuff be harder to unlock?

There is a lot more to plus than just online. As a Vita owner I can hand on heart say I've only ever paid for two games, but have a huge library of games. Loads still on my PS3 and 4 as well. Personally I feel it's a pretty horrific choice to ask the player to make and while it will garner plenty of PR I'd be interested in seeing the numbers who choose to leave the woman in this horrific circumstances. In addition how does it change the gameplay? Does saving her alert the enemy but blow your cover and the woman dies in the cross fire? Does not saving her protect your cover and said woman lives to remind you later of the horrors you allowed her to be subjected to?

The sad, slow death of Lego Dimensions

freethinker101

I got Dimensions for my son and it seemed a great fit for the WiiU. 1st season was good, with Who, being great but Scooby Doo being a huge disappointment. Did ok at Asda getting 3 for 2 occasionally. Although season 2 has been awful and as my son said "its like they've taken al the best parts of Lego Games and make you pay for it"
He much prefers Lego City, and Marvel superheroes.

Knack 2 review

freethinker101

@abeeken I agree, I'm the one at home with my kids so I get to play a bit more than I should. I got round the child thing by getting a Wii U which was a lot of fun, and much more family friendly unless you want to be doomed to endless Lego games. Horizon is great but requires a good deal of initial investment of your time in the beginning.
1 1

freethinker101

@abeeken I think the fact that it comes from such a high pedigree means expectations are that it should be ground-breaking! Plus we are in a wonderful period of this gen with so many great games to choose from, that something that's OK will struggle to find an audience. I myself am only halfway through Horizon, and still have Nier, Tomb Raider and Dishonoured 2 in their wrappings. Still I'll take your recommendation and give it a go.

freethinker101

Why Knack hasn't been a PS plus freebie yet is something I'll never understand. Instead they release a budget sequel for a game few played! Surely a plus give away would have boosted interest. Regardless I think I'll be giving it a go as my son is interested and the price is alright! As many on here have said it harks back to a simpler time when jumping and one punch was all you needed for hours of fun!

Microsoft and PlayerUnknown dance around the thorny issue of Battlegrounds console exclusivity

freethinker101

I've see a lot of talk about Tomb Raider, but not much about Elite Dangerous. Exactly the same thing happened with them. The PR was all about "How Microsoft was the right platform to launch Elite on!" Funnily enough it's now on Sony. The risk the dev takes is by the time it comes out on the market leader, the end user may have moved on. Regardless they will sell some on the platform and there will be a heightened interest in their next endeavours.

Latest Humble Bundle offers a ton of 2K games on PlayStation

freethinker101

@The_B a friend of mine used to work for Sony and they have a very fractured corporate structure, so while based in the same building different entities operated independently of each other. This I think protects against one divisions gains being written off by another divisions losses. In addition there will be regional licensing agreements, and the publisher still has a say over the price Sony asks for games not published by Sony. So you've also got the regional differences inherent to the other publishers.

@giorgoskatsas thank you for your well made point, but I think I'll reserve my anger for more pressing world issues and my sons inability to learn how to grind his tablet games :-), as for this I'll just hurt them where it counts by not buying the game. We are after all talking about a series in which the ending of the original was paid for DLC!

freethinker101

I don't understand the anger over this. It happens every time a publisher does it, and WB have been one of the worst when it comes to nickel and dimeing the end user! Still most games don't come out with the feature and really it's aimed at the casual gamer who just wants to finish the story quickly and trade it in. The reality is any gamer worth their salt won't use it!

Titanfall's smartphone game offers a possible insight into why the series is struggling

freethinker101

Not had a chance to play but its on the phone! As for TF2 its a great game, but does go to show that a majority of gamers don't read reviews and habit buy. The hardcore can only do so much, but if a game doesn't enter the general consciousness it will not do well. An example could be No Mans Sky success which left most casual gamers cold, but caught their imagination. Disappointed they will return to the current years crop of Fifa, COD and BF.

I loved the story game and some of the mp stuff. Haven't even touched the bit outside the city walls but aim to soon. Techland, and WB have put a lot into.this game and it deserves as wide an audience as it can get. The only issue is you need to plough about 3 or 4 hours into the game before it gets good, 10 for great, and about 20 before its awesome! The grappling hook which is an optional mission is where the game really takes off!

freethinker101

I'll be giving it a go. I remember an article a few years back about Binary Domain in support of the AA title I think it was called. It celebrated the mid budget game in a generation where it was AAA or nothing. This gen is better due to the indie influx, but I'd like to see more stuff like this. Mid budget games trying to punch above their weight. Occasionally those games succeed and become huge!
