@dogmanstaruk I agree, it's absolutely poisonous. It's gotten to the point where folk will not play games because they're not hitting a certain technical benchmark. It would be like not watching a film because there is no HD version available. Such a shame.

The amount of emphasis commenters here put on performance is so tiresome. Like broken records, 720, 1080, 30fps, 60fps, 120 dads per second. COOL YOUR BEANS.

A large contingency of tech obsessed gamers have forgotten what's actually important and memorable in games, art direction. Atmosphere, character design, colour palette. Years on no one recalls fondly the framerate of Wind Waker, Ico, Journey etc. They recall the worlds they explore, the characters they met and the feeling of immersion.

At some point we got obsessed the 'graphics'. They're not what creates your emotional attachment to a game, it's art direction and the personality of the work that stays with you.

A game deep frozen from 1987? Captures the look to a tee? How can experienced reviewer have such a naive view of game art?

it doesn't capture any sort of retro look, 8 or 16-bit, in the slightest.

It's pixel density is all over the place, the colour palettes are muddy and bland, on top of that it's laden with post processing effect and particle emitters. Mixes art styles, blurred out paintings and randomly sized pixels, no!

Did you actually play any games from that era, this is faux pixel art at it's worst.

Take a look at Shovel Knight, OwlBoy or Scott Pilgrim to see how it should be done.

Too much money? Do people know how much games cost to make?

The ambition of the game, scale of the team, burn rate, feature creep, there are dozens of factors that affect budget. This looks like a high polish RTS, a complex genre that requires heavy balancing and many, many assets.

The internet has bred a special kind of armchair critic that speak with authority on subjects they know absolutely nothing about.

Look at film, some cost tens of thousands, some cost hundreds, some more. Just stop and have a little think.

Children of Morta's pixel art is truly a sight to behold

famous_roy

Ugh, no, this is an inconsistent art style.

Gradients on pixel art... no. Some of the spot animations are ok, nothing special. It's dense, messy and not actually very readable.

Some journos and punters look at something like this and give it a free pass because it's pixel art. It still needs decent, consistent art direction.

Look at Owlboy, The Iconoclasts, Scott Pilgrim, Hyper Light Drifter. These succeed not because they're pixel art but because they have good colour palettes, character designs and consistency.

To be brutal, the art is really inconsistent and weak.

Nasty colour palette choices on the dungeons, lots of gradients and effects that would be otherwise unachievable on the SNES. It's a commendable effort and maybe it's just early days, but the art side of things breaks the illusion.

People are really impressed by baubles aren't they?

This looks shocking, sure the environments and monsters are highly detailed, but it looks like the result of something incredibly heavily focus grouped. There is zero art direction, it's just vaguely sci-fi/fantasy and the character design...

All tedious males with j-pop hair driving around in a fucking shiny car, what on earth. What's the theme other than 'loads of stuff generally perceived to be cool by 14 year olds'.

Looking back at Chrono Trigger, FFVII, FFVI and all the other wonderful, creative works of Square's history - it's crushing to see this music video looking gank as their current output.

There's always Bloodborne I guess.

Is everyone really excited about continuing to duck behind crates and shoot guards as a white male again?

Seriously, some nice effects but they're basically the same gameplay mechanics again, and again in a different skin.

Look at Resi4 with it's varied arenas, pushing enemies down ladders, running from barn to barn, climbing bell towers, that was the FIRST game in this genre and it had more variety!

BioWare surveys fans for Mass Effect 4 input

famous_roy

@null I see where you're coming from but I definitely felt Mass Effect 2 in particular had great artistic merit. The quality of the locations, storytelling and characterisation were up there with many of my other sci-fi faves.

I do agree that with each iteration it loses a bit more of what made that initial artistic kernel special.

NO!

Stop asking us what the games should be like. Imagine if Spielberg asked audiences what dinosaurs they'd like to see in Jurassic Park, if thatgamecompany asked whether or not there should be combat in Journey, Picasso whether he should us more realistic proportions.

My only request: Create and share your art. Have some conviction in your creative decisions. Don't try to please everybody, everything shouldn't have to appeal to everyone. If it did life would be boring as hell.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time retrospective

famous_roy

@PhilosopherKing Beautiful Story!

Recently replayed it on 3DS and it just contains an unquantifiable magic that so few other games possess.

Forgive me for sharing my own first experience with the game, I'm sure to ramble.

Christmas '98. I woke up in a dozy stupor to an unusually misty, yet sunny morning. Drew the curtains in the living room and dappled, hazy sunlight poured out. Having stared at my new copy of Ocarina for a good few moments I jammed it in the N64, turned the power on and was instantly intoxicated by the now famous title screen sequence, a window into the level of adventure and exploration I was in for.

After Navi's flight through Kokori Forest (incredibly cinematic for the time) I began my adventure as the hero of time, a young, chunky Link, a far cry from the powerful looking adventurer from the title screen, when do I get to be him? When do I get a horse?

What struck me about Kokori Forest was the gorgeous, carefree atmosphere, drenched in morning sunlight yet misty (the N64's graphical limitations no doubt helped out here) which oddly mirrored the mood outside, utter contentment.

This stands out in my memory as a perfect gaming experience and set the bar for all games to come. It's greatest success is after dropping you in the world, it doesn't break the suspension of disbelief and keeps you fully immersed in it's world, somehow striking a balance of pulling you along and allowing you to go off the beaten track to discover it's many hidden wonders.

Perfect.

Thomas Was Alone review

famous_roy

@dapperbandit Art direction is the master, technical execution it's tool. If not for creative and original art direction, the look of games would grow along a single dull branch.

Thankfully there are developers who think beyond realistically rendered orcs and explore the wealth of ideas the human brain can muster. Thomas does a lot with a little, it's actually harder to make something work with fewer elements. Great design comes from restraint.

There are countless games pointlessly striving towards the fallacy of photo realism, go play them and let the rest of us enjoy the full picture.

famous_roy

So they’ve ‘fixed’ Final Fantasy XIII by adding towns. Soulless, anaemic looking towns. Doesn’t help matters that all the NPCs stand around listlessly like mannequins, FFVI and VII had more convincing environments than this!

Think about Cosmo Canyon, or Sector 7 in Midgar, the architecture and mood told a story in itself. This looks like nothing to me, like a Second Life town or something, a beige husk of disappointment.

What a ridiculous amount of self-entitlement these people have. Valve created Half-Life, without them it never even would have existed, so be grateful. Yes they buy smaller developers, but by doing so they nurture them and pour a ton of love and talent into helping them realise their vision.

Let them do it in their own good time, do people really think pressuring them into a release will make the game better? As if we don't have enough great games on the horizon without people throwing their toys out of the pram over not getting their bottle. Get a grip!
