Dark Souls 3 review

I agree with Rich that this game lacks the poetry of its predecessors and is referential for reference's sake. I can't really reconcile that with calling it "a fitting conclusion." It's a great game, but as a conclusion to the trilogy it falls woefully short. I'm basically hoping the DLC finishes the game, as right now I just have too many questions to be left satisfied. This is something only lore nerds like me will care about though, for the rest of you, this may be the best Soulsborne game yet.

1080p60 and beyond: the best PC hardware for Metal Gear Solid 5

Playing at 4K using the settings DF recommends here (Effects and Post-Processing on High) and it just looks stunning. Amazing work by KojiPro, the Fox Engine is a marvel. I don't know whether to be more impressed by the PC version or the fact that the console versions run at 60FPS.

Also, I highly recommend turning off Depth of Field for PC users - it turns off the erratic blurring when using the scope, and the DoF effect remains present for cut scenes, so it doesn't compromise the look of them.

I'd rather play 4k with a 30fps lock but even that is impossible with my shiny new 980 GTX TI. It's mostly solid, but there are occasional big framedrops, mostly related to the batmobile.

So, what's going on with Hitman?

dudefella

@jabberwocky But on harder difficulties you'd have to contend with, in some cases, ridiculous guard patterns that are almost impossible to get through without bloodshed, and the broken disguise system. I played on Hard (or whatever they called it) for a while and gave up on the umpteenth "evade the cops" level. Dropped it down to normal so I could bloody well get on with it. If I feel forced to knock out or kill non-targets, the game has failed as a Hitman game.
2 0

dudefella

Absolution was half of a good (Hitman) game and half a really dire (Splinter Cell) game. The worst of it all, to me, was the baffling, inane save/checkpoint system that restored the level to its default state if you loaded your save. THAT IS NOT A SAVE SYSTEM. IT IS THE OPPOSITE. In a game all about controlling your environment, planning perfect crimes, leaving no trace etc. Just a mind-boggling idiotic design decision. Had they just had a proper save system with limited saving like the old Hitman games, it would have instantly been so much more (re)playable.

Warframe review

dudefella

The reviewer clearly did not play a lot of this game, and fair play, it does start slowly, and repetitively, and doesn't really get interesting until a few hours in, with higher level weapons and Frame abilities and more challenging missions. But I think the weapons and mechanics are solid, if slightly floaty, and I really enjoyed the several dozen hours I spent playing this on the PC. It's not going to rock your world, but if you're looking for something to play with low barrier to entry, it's very much worth playing.

Taking games seriously

dudefella

@PlugMonkey Personally, I thought the overly blatant self-insertion of the developers in Hotline Miami was waaaay too on the nose to be effective criticism for me. Too fourth-wall breaking, too obvious, too clumsy a metaphor, whatever. So yeah, I think we're diametrically opposed on these games :D Not to say I thought Hotline Miami was a failure in that regard, but it certainly didn't affect me the way Spec Ops did. But I see where you're coming from and I respect that.

This thread and your posts have been a pleasure, and remarkably civil to boot.
3 1

dudefella

@PlugMonkey How does it turn off the interaction? You still have to do it. Just because there is no choice doesn't mean there is no interaction. That makes no sense to me.

And again, I don't think Spec Ops so much has a message as it just asks a bunch of very critical question of the player and the genre it's deconstructing. Certainly, it's anti-violence, but imo any violent story that doesn't carry that message has grossly failed as a responsible piece of art.

It's about many things: American interventionism, PTSD, savior complex, and that's just a surface plot reading. It's also about the role of the player in interactive fiction, about the banality of most "moral choices" in games, about the relationship between player and developer. To dismiss it entirely is a bit short-sighted. And just comparing it to film, or merely looking at it as an adaptation of Heart of Darkness, just is not very helpful at all.

@PlugMonkey It hasn't been done in other media, though. How can any medium other than video games make you inhabit the character as he makes that decision? The point of the scene is more nuanced than you give it credit for. Purely on narrative terms, yes, it works to make Walker do something bad that the player has no control over. The point isn't necessarily to blame the player, but to ask the question "how culpable are you?" And where does 'the line' between the player and the character exist? It's not doing it simply so it can shame you, the player, afterwards. That would be ridiculous, given that there is no choice.

It also emphasizes how ridiculous the notion is that the only choices that matter in most games, morally, are the ones that are clearly demarcated as choices, like Little Sisters in Bioshock. That implies that nothing else in the game is a choice, that killing your enemies carries no moral meaning one way or the other. Spec Ops made me question that. The player might not have a choice besides killing their enemies in a game like this. Likewise, Walker thought he had no choice but to use the WP. But did he or didn't he? Did you, the player?

I see it more as a jumping off point to discuss choice, meaning and the line between the player and the character, and to me that's one of the most prominent meanings of the title "The Line." If you didn't get that and felt swindled, totally fair, but it's worth examining WHY you felt that way, and if it's maybe a little bit just because games have conditioned you to be the hero and/or to give you a choice that ostensibly absolves you of any crime despite the fact that you killed a whole bunch of dudes.

Gaming academia has come a long way, in that it was barely a thing 10 years ago. The problem is that the medium is so young, we still lack a good vocabulary to talk about mechanics and the intersection of play and narrative, which is where a lot of the interesting ideas lie.

If there's one aspect of academia games can do without though, it's the canonization, the ivory tower if you will. The way it takes 50 years for something to be deemed worthy of critical discussion, and the arbitrary distinction between, say, literature and genre fiction. Bollocks. There's good art and bad art, end of. Genre and theming has no bearing on quality or the ideas on display.

Anyway. I'm a first year English major and I'm just getting my feet wet trying to write about games academically, seeing what fits. I actually wrote a short essay on Assassin's Creed IV the other day if you'd like to read it (be warned, it's filled with spoilers) http://dailygamed.tumblr.com/post/68555227615/the-eagle-and-the-jackdaw-identity-and-purpose-in

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time retrospective

Good grief, I love Ocarina of Time, but I can't stand to read this article. Using big words doesn't make you a better writer.

"Beyond the class of its arrangement, there's an accord that surpasses the game's mechanisms: an unintended poetry - the hallmark of all great things. Its fine tapering exercises an iron command over the player's imagination and emotions, parading thunderous confrontations, wistful locations, unforgettable relationships, and pure charm in every facet of its periphery"

For real, man? What do I know, I don't get paid to write, but this is unbearable to me.

Make it a prequel, never ever mention Reapers, or Shepard, or Protheans, or anything super specific to the previous trilogy, and you're pretty much golden. Yeah I don't buy GTA 4 as an evolution of much of anything. It's all surface level, there's not much depth, mostly Rockstar aping genre films, which is what they always do in their stories.

Also, not to get all ad hominem, Mr Whitehead, but you lost a lot of credibility with me for your Mass Effect 3 review. "The first truly modern blockbuster" or some such, my ass, not to mention the horrific ending that went unmentioned. At least you weren't alone in that.

Grand Theft Auto 5 voice cast includes real-life gang members

dudefella

Yes, The Wire did this also, but The Wire was pretty clear in its message in intent. I don't trust Rockstar to do anything even remotely as good. Every Rockstar story has been a pastiche of genre films, their writers don't have an original bone in their body. And so far, what I've seen of GTA5 looks to be more self-serious glorification of crime with a wink and a handwave that it's all in the name of fun.

And Rockstar announcing everything they do as if they're the first to do it, and it's the best thing in the world, is really off-putting. Very arrogant and self-serving, not to mention belittling what actors actually do for a damn living. Get a grip.
