Civilization 6's sexist leaders are getting tweaked

disusedgenius

@Kami

Yeah it doesn't bother me at all, I just kinda wish I could play against an actual Ghandi rather than a meme. Or at least make it a rarer agenda for him rather than so heavily weighted.

@ambershee

Ah, makes sense. I feel like this is one of those settings they should allow for at setup. It doesn't seem too out of the question to be able to tier agendas by how judgemental they are.

One issue might be that I always play on Huge sized maps (I do love the exploration part of the game), so when you have double digit numbers of AI leaders having one or two that hate you is fine and adds flavour. Maybe that ratio doesn't work so well on smaller maps.

@Fourfoldroot

Did I miss the point in the article where it mentioned the "sexist" nature of it's leaders?
AI leaders in the game have a chance of disliking your leader purely because of their gender. Each one gets given a random 'agenda' which can be anything from loving science, to hating big armies to being a sexist.

@ambershee

Even so, it should be a mix. You (well, I) want life-long enemies to go along with your life long friends. It'd be an issue if you spawn in a game where everyone 'plain doesn't like you', but one or two in a map feels like what the devs are after.

@ambershee

Sure, it's very hard to please someone in the game who's predisposed to dislike you. Especially on higher difficulties where the margin is so much tighter.

But you're still describing something that sounds like it's working as intended. These Civs are meant to be advisories as well as friends, after all. I think the early AI went too heavy on hating you, but my past few games have all had a nice mix of friends and enemies.

@ambershee

It's the point of the design. Not all civilisations are going to disposed to like you.

And there are things you can do about it, it just sets the bar higher to make them happy with you.

I'd also say that the context of these things is a little different - I feel like the aspect of history they're going for is a ruler who wants a marriage (as is separate from their own personal sexuality, lineage of the Kingdom and all that) and a ruler who happens to be a raging pussy-grabbing arsehole. It is all a little clumsy though.

Speaking of dodgy agendas though, part of me with they'd tone down the Nuke Happy Gandhi thing. I know memes lol etc, but I'd be quite happy for that to get patched out after a bit of fun in the initial release.

'Curmudgeon' is a weird word to use in place of 'sexist' to begin with. But then I guess they also didn't want to have hetro- or homosexual be agendas, which might be more offensive.

Yeah, it's a quota on the hiring process. On staff because that was the areas they were having issues diversifying in that sport. It's not like a quota has to be a blunt tool.

I was thinking of the Rooney Rule in American Football, which I think the FA might also implement in the UK.

Edit: It looks like there were a lot more in the UK before the EU deemed it illegal a while ago. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2003/aug/05/cricket.rugbyunion But I guess we'll be 'free' of all that soon enough.

Hiring females for the sake of it in a League where millions are on the line, is not the way to fix the "diversity problem".
I dunno, you see it enough in 'real' sports with various kinds of quotas to open up opportunities.

I do find it somewhat amusing that something as optimistic as OW chose to smash together traditional local tribalism and a crass franchise system to sell itself as a sport. It's just one other reminder that this brave new world post-internet is going to be pretty much the same as the old one.

Civilization 6: Rise and Fall review

disusedgenius

2 months ago

@ambershee

Yeah, but then I remember what a mess 5 was on launch as well.

My initial impression for this is actually higher than Gods and Kings, as an example. G&K made the middle of Civ5 enjoyable, but we still had to wait for them to sort out the end game with the second expansion.

In comparison Rise and Fall is more of an overall improvement to the game as a whole.

Saying that, it leans even more into the 'Civ as a mechanical board game' thing that 6 does. Personally I couldn't go back to 5 because some of the underlying new mechanics (unstacked city districts, trade routes etc) just clicked with me more, but I can imagine that not everyone will like the style as much.

I've only played for a few hours, but already it makes a huge difference to how you have to play the game. It's certainly not tinkering around the edges.

To be fair though, Civ6 vanilla is already my longest played game on Steam so the idea of paying for 'another' full game isn't an issue for me. I could pay double (I mean, I won't...) and it'd still be better value than anything else I buy this year.

disusedgenius

I've been playing this a bunch and also love it. It's a weird mix of RTS/Tower Defence and some kind of Don't Starve resource gathering/tech three thing.

Hopefully when the full game releases they'll add a few other modes for when you can't be arsed with the ironman thing. But the one mode it has is very playable for early access, I just hope it doesn't lose momentum.

@mecha-Asshat

It can be tough to tell when there's actual cheating in the game. You could've been spotted by a drone, camera or a character ability or you could've just been heard walking.

A lot of spawn peaking is just muscle memory for the defenders - just run to one of the set points and take a pot shot just in case they're there. But they have adjusted all the maps so the enemy won't have line of sight until you've moved out.

@X201

Apparently this has been changed as part of the patch as well. Now, non-religion focused Civs will only go for prophets if they've been given an advantage (i.e. like spawning next to a natural wonder).

In much bigger news: religious units will be all on their own movement layer, so they won't be blocking your workers any more. And the AI shouldn't be swarming them in the same way either (again, in theory).

Big Civilization 6 update reboots religion

disusedgenius

6 months ago

It definitely needed a revamp, but from the sounds of it they haven't actually solved any of the core problems with it - in that it just involves spamming religious units who end up swarming and blocking tiles, which in turn become unable to be used for anything else.
I'm presuming that having zones of control means that you can effectively block incoming religious units with your troops, at least.

Dawn of War 3 review

disusedgenius

12 months ago

@George-Roper

It has as much of a heritage as a Diablo/RTS hybrid as it does a C&C style RTS. Because there's two, distinctly different games in the series.

And they haven't branched into a sub-genre of RTS. It's a straight up RTS. It's a different mix of all the various things RTS can be, same as the last two games.

What it hasn't done is taken on any of the features of MOBAs that make them distinct from any other RTS. It was something that was mentioned in the early preview articles (presumably because that's the RTS genre of choice for the masses at the moment), but now we've had the beta and the game is released it's clearly false.
2 2

disusedgenius

12 months ago

@George-Roper
It really does seem like you've only been playing one type of RTS or something. Quick combat is RTS, light base building is RTS, hero units have been in almost every RTS campaign I can think of.

Whereas the things that make a MOBA is single character levelling against creep... Which isn't a thing in this game at all.

So what RTS game do you basically want remade? Because you're being awfully reductionist about anything that isn't matching a rather exact template in your head.
7 2

disusedgenius

12 months ago

@George-Roper

"Get to fuck this is a DoW1 style RTS."

Of course it is - the resource generation, the unit-based gameplay, even the feel of the movement of the troops is there.

Obviously it's not a copy paste reskin of DoW1, but it doesn't feel like anything else than a Relic RTS. It sure as fuck isn't a MOBA.

@George-Roper
"This further change into a new sub-genre of RTS, one that's mired in money, money, money isn't done for any reason other than the same. Money, money, money."

What the fuck is this bullshit. It's a DoW1 style RTS with hero units in there (which has been an RTS staple in SP modes for literally decades).

There's no creep, no XP, no levelling. This is in no way a MOBA. In fact this is exactly the game you're demanding.
