Luck and wartime spirit converge in a game made of brass

The game sounds like a fun 5 minute distraction but the 'Members Only' atmosphere that your wife's step dad seems to be insistent on creating sounds like pure tedium (if that's what you were intending to put across in the article of course).

We know PlayStation 4.5 is real - but why is Sony making it?

dickothe1st

Certainly an interesting proposition. It's been said before but the mobile phone market thrives on this kind of upgrade model and in some ways buying a phone handset outright can be even more expensive than buying a PS4.

The majority of people probably won't be too bothered about an upgrade but with the launch of VR it could give this console cycle the legs it needs to take advantage of new technologies. I could see Sony putting the current model into run-off within a few years time, the old model still supported just not so much by VR etc.

@Darren I agree with you on the most part but then I think this is the perfect type of game for the platform - more a case of bad design than the device itself.

Hearthstone after all is so so well made for iPad I could not bear to think of playing it on PC as was originally conceived.

GTA5 "absolutely not a massive, empty world"

dickothe1st

I understand the trepidation surrounding how this game is going to run on current gen consoles but has anybody actually played Red Dead recently? That game looks fantastic and proved conclusively that Rockstar learnt alot from the lessons of making GTA4.

There will be those that argue that Red Dead was more open desert etc than what GTAV looks to be but the guys at Rockstar have had an extra few years to squeeze some more juice out of their resources.

I think we need to have a bit of confidence and believe that they have built this game on current gen (not saying it might not come out next gen) for a reason...

I can't wait :)

Who puts these cretins in charge?! You think they'd notice that popularity has wained SINCE they dumbed it down. Who is this gamer who buys core games and can't be bothered to learn the controls?! Another example of a publisher being totally out of touch with the consumer.

Tomb Raider has sold 3.4 million copies, failed to hit expectations

Maybe companies should release games in the summer as opposed to cramming them in with other releases. Had God of War and Bioshock not been coming out I would have bought Tomb Raider. In hindsight, Tomb Raider was probably far better than GoW but hey ho, what's done is done.

Next Xbox games run from hard drive, discs not supported post-install - report

Firstly, if this is true? Sony take my money.Realistically, I imagine it will be similar to the current console where you install but need the disc for verification. Either way, no preowned games is a BIG deal to me as I simply can't afford to buy everything full price nor do I want to.

Questing for freedom in The Elder Scrolls Online

dickothe1st

Why do they have to stick to MMO tropes? I imagine Skyrim but multiplayer co-op. It would work, make quests designed to be completed by multiple players (ruins with levers that must be pulled at the same time etc) and you have an engaging title. MMO equates to "watered down" to me and you shouldn't do that to something so deep as TES series.

Crytek-authorised TimeSplitters Rewind in development for PC

dickothe1st

@bigdaddy82That's fair enough - I guess in that light its an investment in personel rather than IP. You may sense my frustration! A company that churns out, in my opinion, a generic military shooter over such a charming game as TS - sad times.

BigDaddy82 wrote:@dickothe1stIt's nothing to do with Crytek being lazy, it's all about them making a new Timesplitters viable from a business point of view. Cevat launched a petition for Crytek to make it, not enough people showed interest, so they're not making it. Maybe this mod will remind more people of the franchise and get those petition numbers up, but in the mean time it's not Crytek's fault that it's not being made.I'm pretty sure Crytek PURCHASED Free Radical.  If they had no intention of making a sequel can somebody please explain to me the thinking behind the purchase. The Timesplitters IP is a sitting duck thanks to Crytek - maybe nobody signed the petition because nobody knew enough about it. I'm sure the vast majority of EG readers would support Timesplitters over Crysis any day.

Crytek are still douchebags. This guy's attitude of "we can't be bothered but we'll take the credit if it's successful" is cringe-worthy. I hope it does end up being amazing and it pushes Crytek to get their finger out their asses and make a full sequel.

I can't imagine this can work - you still have to build a majority of the game to show of a small section. It's a pre-release demo in a way is it not? I doubt publishers would allow pre-alpha builds to be released to the general public to play, they would be buggy as hell.

US retail giant GameStop reminds Microsoft and Sony why it thinks always-online consoles are a bad idea

dickothe1st

@javvymanI agree with you. It's important not to be so narrow minded with an issue like this. Yes it may be easier to simply download titles but its a sad sign of the industry that the big players have no ear to the ground when it comes to the consumers. I simply would not pay 50quid for a digital copy of a game, I simply don't value games that highly and if that is the only avenue to purchase games I would probably lose interest.

@skoochGreat attitude to have when it comes to people's jobs. Maybe you'd be so kind as to find an alternative for all those with the hassle of finding new employment. The state of a console's internet connection is not a fair comparison.

I think it's sad that this is happening. Physical discs will be a major contingent for a long while yet and I rely on trade ins for probably 75% of my purchases. Does this mean I will simply have piles of brand new, completed games gathering dust? It's a positive aspect of our pastime that we can pass games on and all benefit from it whether we are the retailer or the consumer.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag preview: how Ubisoft plans to hook you back in

dickothe1st

@tazerfan What you're saying is so true of gamers - I do it all the time - in that it isn't the brand that attracts the purchase. Sometimes it's simply the attraction a new big budget title - its the quality rather than the name that we're buying. Is there cause to suggest that Ubisoft would do just as well by releasing a new IP but give it plenty of coverage to create interest and maintain the high production standards of AC? The AC promotional vids etc are usually pretty awesome to be fair.

Amid growing anger at micro-transactions, CliffyB calls on gamers to vote with their wallets

dickothe1st

You have to ask the question: why do micro transactions anger people? I don't think price, content or the attitude of publishers is the reason. My own opinion is that micro transactions are wasted on me. I don't buy them, I don't care for them and because of this I feel that dev time could have been better spent. I mostly just tire of reading headlines associated with them as it is an aspect of the games market that I have no time for. I paid my money up front and I expect to reap a fulfilling experience from the vanilla version of a game. I shouldn't HAVE to pay more to get the experience the devs originally intended me to have.

Wii U sold around 55K during January in the US

dickothe1st

@shiftygeezerThe problem with that comparison though is that the GameCube was on par with its rivals in terms of horsepower. What we have here is a 360/PS3 vs Wii situation where any port from the next gen consoles will be severely dumbed down to cope with lower graphical capabilities of the console. It will not win over many 3rd party devs when the rival companies bring their new systems to the table.
