Beautiful, deadly, and without feeling - why Modern Warfare Remastered is the perfect organism

darleysam

I always felt like CoD4 was more of an anti-war game than it seems to be remembered as. There's so many cynical touches through it, the kind of ideas that Spec Ops: The Line would later pick up and run with.

'Killing the player' wasn't just a shocking moment for the sake of being shocking. I'd seen that shot of a nuke detonating in the trailers and thought to myself "yeah how are they going to contrive to make you survive that?"
Well they didn't. That was the shock, not the horrors of war, but that you the player are mortal.

The early scene where you're killing people in their beds felt horrible, as did safely raining death on people below, turning them into mist and limbs while a bored-sounding voice remarks on your kills. The whole thing felt like it wanted you to at least think more about what you were doing, to feel something other than a quick visceral thrill at killing the next guy.

I think the problem is that I feel like I see these character archetypes in so many games. There's the slow, heavy tank, the quick lady, there's White Mansoldier, and also Mr Guns (he has two guns). Roadhog is Pudge is other fat dude with a chain.

The state of video game TV

@Matthew_Hornet for sure they're not Mail or Express-grade bad, but they have their own lows where "Notch tweets opinion" gets pages of discussion and dissection. That's why I'm grateful to EG for giving much less time to those reactionary columns, and writing better, more-considered stuff.

You know, the thing about a sort of 'magazine show' about games, that Top Gear format, it does kind of exist already on youtube but not in one single collated episode. If you take a week's output from somewhere like Achievement Hunter/Let's Play, you've got a whole variety of regular bits and pieces, different formats all under the one banner, that's not far off being linked together by a host and repackaged into an hour of TV.

"...there's no gossip, there's no cheap intrigue to fill acres of news print about who's feuding with whom.

"All that kind of ancillary stuff that fills column inches and keeps people ticking over on the Kardashians or Taylor Swift, doesn't exist in the video game industry at all. It's just a thing. It's just a product. And the product goes out to the consumer, and the consumer enjoys it."

Battlefield 1 open beta off to shaky start as EA servers suffer outage

darleysam

On the game itself, I don't at all get the "it's just Battlefront" comparisons. Like, visually sure they're using the same engine, but as an actual game they feel completely different. There's a weight and pacing to this that wasn't there in Battlefront, which felt too quick and floaty for my liking. It's like people are looking at a screenshot of some sand and going "yep Star Wars, oh well".

It's a shame. Worked fine for me on Tuesday, so it's a shame if people are getting angry at EA/DICE for this rather than the idiots who thought it'd be fun to DDoS them.

I loved the way it's handled in The Kingkiller Chronicles ('the name of the wind', and 'the wise man's fear' so far). I'd need to actually go back and re-read one to entirely remember how it works, but I think as the name suggests, it's about a deep, mental understanding of the things you're trying to manipulate.

I mean, I don't know what the reason is other than it's cheaper and easier to stick a label over it than print a whole new cover, but I'm entirely certain it isn't that the internet has caught their outrageous deception and they're trying to backpedal.

edit: I would love for everyone to get a grip and wait to see what Hello actually say when they do, than honk away on the "LIES!" klaxon and get so very angry.

DICE ponders: what did people really like about Battlefield: Bad Company?

darleysam

Three simple things, specifically for the first Bad Company:
1) the areas you were fighting in felt open and versatile. They weren't enclosed corridors, but spaces to move around in and engage the enemy from different positions.

2) the characters were funny and enjoyable to spend time with. This became more muted in BC2, and it showed. I enjoyed playing the game to hear their interactions.

3) you weren't trying to save the world (or if you were, I've forgotten it in favour of the caper-like plot to steal gold and escape the war). You were a group of bumbling idiots trying to save their own arses, and that's it. It wasn't trying to pander to the Call of Duty crowd, it was its own farcical, tongue-in-cheek tale, and I loved it.

Make a new Bad Company that can have these points on the back of the box, and I'll be right there.

E3 2014: the relaunch of brand Xbox One

darleysam

Last year's E3 was also 90 minutes of games. Yes the May reveal didn't mention them, but they even said they did that so they could just talk about games at E3, which they then did. This was a much better received conference and Spencer is SO much better than Mattrick at both the presentation and saying what we want to hear, but I feel it's disingenuous to act like '90 minutes of games' was a new thing for this year, when it's just not.

Epoch: Returns - a game inspired by Mass Effect 1's planetary exploration

darleysam

I want this, it sounds brilliant.

What I felt ME 2 and 3 lost by leaving out the Mako exploration, was the way it slowed down the pace and made the galaxy feel big. Yes the Mako sections were repetitive and often frustrating, but they gave you lots of time where not much was happening except cruising around on a (often beautiful, in my opinion) planet looking for stuff, rather than rushing from fight to fight. It gave the game a pacing I much prefer.

I'm telling you, it's Noughty Doge that Sony owns. ND are only beholden to the whims of their studio head (elected every fifth month by either a Royal Rumble or Tombola, depending on average rainfall). Last I heard, they were working on a port of Crash Racing for Google Glass.

Shinetop, I imagine it's that you'll unlock things that you'll want to use, but will need to replace missiles/countermeasures. They won't "take them away from you" as such, just give you stuff that a skilled pilot would want, but will have to sacrifice other things to take advantage of.

As someone who took forever to unlock missiles, this is nice to hear.

Or, more simply, the moderator just got fed up with reading a torrent of sexist, misogynistic spite in the comments thread under the latest article on a gaming website to mention a woman, despite how reflective of society and important it might be, and elected to tell everyone to drop it for just this one time. I'm sure civil liberties will hold up, and society won't crumble into an Orwellian nightmare vision.

No, repulsive speech does not need protection. Sexism needs no more help or encouragement than the idiots who so desperately cling to it are willing to give it themselves. And certainly a public forum that you don't own or operate has absolutely no requirement to pander to your outdated, pathetic, bigoted views, or your burning desire to vomit them over everybody else.
