@IronGiant I'd agree with you generally on that point. I barely have time to finish the current gen games I have without going back to the older stuff.

Unless its Nintendo. Then I'll pay through the nose for the umpteenth time to play Super Mario World. Again.

Yet more evidence that none of the platform holders can do everything right...

Nintendo - Supreme first party games, middling at best third party support, abysmal multiplayer and networking, minimal back cat access

Microsoft - Weak to middling first party, good third party support, probably best in class multi and networking, amazing back cat support

Sony - Strong first party, good third party support, middling multiplayer and network, weak back cat support

In this day and age you’re probably going to want at least two consoles to cover the bases....

PS2 era Pro Evolution Soccer games gave me some of my favourite multiplayer experiences. I was fortunate enough to work two jobs in the era where we had a console in the break room. Those games were truly epic in 1v1 and 2v2.

WWF No Mercy remains the best wrestling game and a mighty fine multiplayer experience too. Endless hours playing that on a friday night with my flatmate, waiting for Raw to start on Sky Sports

Controversial UK online shop Gameseek goes into liquidation

cowell

@Gamer7872 Can 100% confirm they did this. This is a good few years ago but a distributor I worked for supplied Gameseek with catalogue lines and some more unusual peripherals and whatnot. Stuff they wouldn’t want to hold stock and he’d call almost daily to order single units of all sorts of rubbish. And of course it was urgent, because the clock was already ticking with his customer

I think Roll7 do some lovely work, I really do, but their early hyperbole concerned me. If memory serves me correctly, they set their stall out with this to be the 'next Rocket League' which was a really bold statement to make. It took Psyonix a couple of goes to make car football, which is a strange but ultimately understandable concept, to stick. And they gave their game away to the PSN audience.

I dunno. Laser League is this mish-mash of Tron-esque games. It's far harder to pin down what it is. And as far as a big multiplayer audience goes, that looked tough when it was first announced. These days its now a mountain to climb.

I hope it works for them, but in this day and age, I genuinely believe that couch co-op is a fairly niche experience.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Switch sales show why these ports of Wii U games exist

cowell

I'm too fussed about this one but will probably give Hyrule Warriors a go. I know there was a bit of grumbling about the price of these re-releases, but that sort of performance probably validates the strategy.

I suspect DK will see a steep drop week two, but the higher initial price gives Nintendo a fair bit of margin to play with when its in the sale.

The mainstream media's inevitable attack on "addictive" Fortnite has begun

cowell

@ShiftyGeezer I think the temptation with this sort of topic is to immediately jump to our hobby's defense, especially when shit rags like The Daily Mail are going in on it (again). Your response is more balanced so fair play.

Think the problem is, that a developer will always default to the most defensive position and site a lack of evidence. If a developer was less circumspect and acknowledged that in certain circumstances or situations that some people were in danger of forming unhealthy behaviour around their particular game, the media would be all over it. There's no middle ground sadly
