Saturday Soapbox: Hard times are here again

@Makkuro
I've never played Dark/Demon Souls but isn't that more of hack and slash game?

The reason I separated hack-n-slash from hand-to-hand combat is that usually hack-n-slash games are fantasy based and have moves that can attack multiple opponents and targeting isn't too much of a problem. And it can look outlandish without looking off.

Batman looks realistic enough attacking multiple targets but the combat is kind of simplified.

@Makkuro
Yes. Or at least every time you tried to escape a horde of guards. As it is, you can just let them surround you, and they'll politely take turns letting you counter-kill them, never presenting any actual threat. It made me feel like an indestructible god in a world of idiots, not an assassin, and as a consequence I tired of the series halfway through AC2.

I think that's really more of a fault/problem of full 3d hand-to-hand combat, I don't think I've ever seen a game (this gen) that has handled it adequately, without making it seem too easy e.g. Sleeping Dogs (not talking about hack and slash games like Bayonetta and Ninja gaiden.)

I said it before but I don't think games have gotten easier or harder.
If you've been playing games for a while now, you know what to expect, almost exactly, so they seem easier.
I'm betting most older players can breeze through SMB3 with the same ease as in NSMB but for kids its still a challenge.

Plus the save system also makes games seem easier, imagine if you had to start COD4's campaign from scratch everytime you started it up.

The many of the games/modes that 'feel hard' are ones that are artificially difficult like making AI insanely accurate and bullet proof in FPSs, or literally making pixel-perfect jumps in platformers etc.

Edit: Many older players don't have the time to play games on hard mode so calling people idiots for completing games in a short amount of time is uncalled for.

Not because the got rid of linux.

COD Elite turns free for Black Ops 2, map packs sold separately

bobdebob

6 years ago

@Nades
It's stat tracking. It's basically 'Combat Record' from BO1 renamed as Elite 2.0.

Elite was just a fancy season pass for MW3 with extras, which why its not carrying over for BOII.

I guess they were experimenting with the youtube-style tips videos, community-thingy competition and see if people would pay for that on its own.

Priorities, man, priorities.

I'm pretty sure sexually harassing a woman is a bit higher on the list of evil things than overpriced videogames.

Step outside your videogame bubble for a minute and remember:

Videogames companies are not evil, videogames are luxury items but things like oil companies, energy companies, etc are evil, things that actually affect life.

Elite was always free, only the map packs weren't.

Even BO1 had elite stat tracking in 'Combat Records' form.

35 Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Season Pass, Elite Free spotted

bobdebob

6 years ago

@SpaceMonkey77
That's a dumb comment for few reasons:

1. If you think the deal is not worth it, don't buy it. You are the idiot if you keep buying something you don't like.

2. The Season Pass is one of the better ideas they've had in awhile, discount if you buy the whole thing, the PRICE is debatable.

3.'Just another flashing name, to get more momeny for what gamers have already paid for.' That doesn't even make sense.

Edit: A more important question is if we buy Elite NOW can we get BOII as well as MW3 maps.
4 3

bobdebob

6 years ago

@mcreddie
Four MAP packs probably meaning 16-20 maps including zombies.

If you know how to cut corners, like buying on release day when there's cheap COD offers like a combined COD + 35 PSN card for 60 or just COD on its own for 25-30 and buying PSN cards off friends who sell them at a discount, then it's quite cheap.

(PSN cards used to go for cheap for cheaper before the PSN blackout though.)

Edit: One more thing, Black Ops 1 already has a working 'Elite stats' system named 'Combat Records' so Elite 2.0 will probably work from the start.

@darkmorgado
Sure a handful of them could be considered high brow but most of them are just for killing time, its just entertainment.

I was going to give a longer reply properly but judging by the other comments, gamers seem to overvalue and are way too emotionally invested to videogames, so my comments would've fallen on deaf ears.

Why Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Prestige is not a start-over system

bobdebob

6 years ago

@TheDynamicDc
That is a bad idea, MW3 has 80 levels and its a grind to go through next prestige and at a disadvantage.

And there's only so many real guns you can add before they start feel the same.

They could add more outrageous guns, like the dragons breath shotgun in SP or a 6-barrel grenade launcher but no way could they balance them without people moaning.

bobdebob

@torment74
No, games are different from movies.

Movies which are black and white or silent are not really hindered by it today.

Whereas old games with dodgy controls and game design (which were great at the time) would definitely sour the experience now.

They don't make RPGs like in the 90's because they were huge timesinks. I've never really played many RPGs back then but the few I remember took ages to finish and you could get stuck on a particular place for hours because of not finding pixel-sized spots.

No busy, working adult has as much time to play long RPGs as they did as a kid.

Crippled by Nostalgia: The Fraud of Retro Gaming

bobdebob

6 years ago

@kupocake
Most music and films don't have the problem of technology constraining them to their past.

Most music and film that were good in the past are still good now, whereas with videogames, let's say Goldeneye 64, has aged quite a bit and only barely holds up, it's still fun to me but that's probably because of nostalgia.

Those games that you mentioned are the handful of games that still stand-up today and those type of games haven't really changed.

@DeusXM
I'm 99% sure there are people collecting old toys with same zeal as videogames, probably more since there is a bigger backlog of stuff to collect. Look at various documentaries and 80's memorabilia shows.

It just looks like more people are collecting videogames, since you are probably looking at gaming news sites and know people who collect videogames.

@jabberwocky
I agree with you that most of it should stay in past.

What annoys me a lot is, on gaming forums and youtube walkthroughs of old games is when someone who's never played the games at the time it was released (or wasn't even born) says its 'better than anything that comes out now' ignoring major flaws which weren't apparent at the time and the innovations of today's gen.

I mean, for people who played SMB3 at the time it was released, it must have been amazing but I played it the 16-bit era when most of the innovative features were standard.
So FOR ME to claim it was 'one of the best' would be a lie.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Review

bobdebob

I bet Tekken's online mode will end the same as almost every other fighters' online mode.
Fun at first, then after a couple of months when people start finding 'touch of death' combos and most of the average players disappear, leaving behind only the dedicated players behind. Making it a pain in the arse to find match-ups your level.

The only fighters I can think of that don't have this problem is SF4 and just maybe, VF5 (although the combos are getting longer).

@Nikanoru
Well, I used to play a LOT of Doom II back then, so map memorization and exploits/glitches helps, ignoring or skipping certain objects and a lot of running. Maybe easy's not the right word but it's manageable and it's probably not easy for people playing it first time but that's due to stacked odds and not necessarily due to the player's skill.

Edit: Maybe not the best example for my argument. But I think my point still stands, gaming difficulty hasn't really changed and many of the 'hard' games of the past have the odds stacked against the player (like Doom's nightmare mode), the AI cheats or have no save system.
1 2

bobdebob

6 years ago

@scuffpuppies
@twentyfour
That's a rose-tinted view of difficulty. Games are as hard as they've always been.

Go back to the games you played as a kid and you'll find you can usually finish it in under an hour.

All those games you used to find hard are now quite easy since you know the ins an outs of them.

Even Doom II on Nightmare difficulty is quite easy now. Twilight Princess is probably really hard to kids now but a piss-easy to anyone who's played a fair amount of zelda games.

Really, most of the games that I find hard are usually because they are 'purposely hard', like psychic ai with precision aim and can see through walls or levels that have incredibly hard layouts.

If the MGS movie is actually any good, it would probably so far removed from the source material that MGS fans would hate it.

MGS is mostly based on fun but quite shallow action films and B-movies e.g. Predator, Escape from L.A., Rambo II\III, with Kojima's shallow, pretentious expositions on war and jumps in logic.
