Salt and Sanctuary is out now on Steam

I would heartily recommend this to anyone that enjoyed the Souls games at all. It's *cough* heavily-inspired by them, and serves as a pretty excellent unofficial 2D companion piece.

Really helped ease the wait for Dark Souls 3, but it's a great game in its own right.

This is an excellent article, and I can't say I'm surprised at all that Kojima's prediction didn't pan out! Glad that you managed to make this both funny and interesting in equal measure. I do still find the character putting me off the game a bit though :s

I enjoyed the article, and this is a minor thing, but shouldn't you refer to him as Prof. Rubik?

A minor thing, but closing by calling him "Dr. Rubik's" just seems a little careless.

Fun article though - I'm a big fan of the cube. It helped me get through my finals at University. Program a bit, zone out and follow instructions to solve the cube. Rinse, repeat.

@repeater If it's anything like E3, then not having Blizzcon this year saves just having another milestone to have to push towards. The move towards E3 demos being a standard in the industry is a real pain in the arse for a lot developers. Having to create a vertical slice of polished gameplay can really screw up a schedule.

Star Wars The Old Republic: My Story, Your Story, Everyone's Story

bigjimbeef

What a superb article. Very well expressed point of view, clearly written without being preachy or too negative. I personally don't experience it in the same way, but that doesn't make your opinion any less valid by any degree.

I was talking to a friend about this, and the best way I could think of to summarise it was thusly:

I play MMOs for the gameplay, for the reward-based nature, and to see bars go up slowly. All the stuff that people despise about the endless grinding for new gear, and repetition - I love that stuff.

The points you make about the weird juxtaposition between the MMO and "single-player" aspect of the game all ring true - but I just don't really mind. I get heavily involved in the story stuff, but it doesn't seem to destroy the immersion for me to see all the MMO stuff that drags you out of character.

I think the most interesting thing for me about this game's launch is the diversity of people it has attracted. There are a lot of people I've come across that really are there for the story.

I'm not quite sure what that means for the future of games in terms of online/offline integration, but I'm glad that a game that caters to such a melting pot of playstyles is out.

Star Wars: The Old Republic Review

bigjimbeef

I've been playing it a fair bit since launch, and loving it. I'd agree with the 8/10 for now, and the review seems well-written. I would vehemently argue with anyone that tries to tell me that the game isn't like WoW in some regards though. I played WoW for years, and the game goes as far as even having talents with the same name (Vigor for the Jedi Shadow is the same as Vigor for WoW Rogues etc.).

Still, I don't think of that as an issue. WoW was great, and this improves on it in a number of ways. As a few people have said, the WoW-like part of it feels like TBC era WoW, which is fine for me. And the bits that are original, which is a very large proportion of the game, are fantastic.

I love it so far. Not comparing it to WoW, or actively denying that it's like it, is just fatuous though.

Star Wars: The Old Republic - The End of an Era?

bigjimbeef

"Whether SWTOR is any good or not is academic at this stage" - I would argue that that isn't really even remotely true. Sure, it's academic what mark it receives from a completely abstract, critical perspective, but if the game is good, it's likely to attract/retain more subscribers. That will not always be true by any margin, but I think one massive thing that this article misses is that it seems to assume all MMOs are equal. To use an example: Vanguard failed not because it was subs-based, but because it was shit. There are a plethora of these examples around. I don't really buy into the idea that we *have* to move to the F2P model in order to make money, and the maths arguing that in the article is rough at best.

I am intrigued to see what happens when a sub-based game that is actually good goes to market. If it is a success, I think it would be narrow-minded to assume that that's completely due to the branding.
