Good games done slow

ardamillo

Thanks for the article! Interesting that this was on your second playthrough. I too like to dawdle, but I can only do so after finishing the game/campaign once. It doesn't make a lot of sense but I don't feel comfortable before that.

IMO the problem is the UI, not the controller. Civ 5 is still unplayable with that text size unless your TV is massive.

Next-gen shrubs: How Assassin's Creed 4 is being ported to new consoles

ardamillo

On the one hand, it's kind of depressing to hear devs saying they're just up-rezzing some rocks and such for new consoles.

On the other hand, it's nice to have a bit of honesty after all this "magic of the cloud" nonsense.

Well said Tom Bramwell. For me, it's the 24 hour requirement that's hard to swallow. The fact that I have to ask permission every day to play my games, sorry, their games, is a huge difference to how XBLA or games on demand work.

Could someone estimate how much of the game is spent in combat? More or less than Tomb Raider for example?

Tomb Raider: Underworld retrospective

ardamillo

I liked Underworld but agree with the article - it had a bit of an identity crisis. Great platforming and puzzling, with some daft motorbikes and combat thrown in for no apparent reason. At least the combat parts were easy and over quickly.

I liked Anniversary even more, since it was almost entirely platform puzzley goodness until the final act. Speaking of which, I still remember killing my first human enemy late in the game and the impact that it had after hours of peaceful solitary tomb raiding. I wonder if the new TR will live up to that moment?

Can't believe they didn't fix the 50/60 Hz issue. I was going to buy this just to have a version of Blood Money that I didn't need to change the video cable to play.

Games of 2012: Spelunky

I'm torn on this one. On the one hand, it can be ridiculously unfair, killing you instantly through no fault of your own. On the other hand, I keep coming back to it...

And as Baban said, the lady/man/mutt is surely one of the great menu options of our time.

Retrospective: Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts

ardamillo

This had both the most satisfying highs and infuriating lows. I loved tinkering in the workshop, but the fiddlier challenges with that wonky physics nearly gave me an aneurysm. And I was never sure if it was meant to be that hard, or I hadn't come up with the right design.

Still, have to applaud Rare for coming up with something original and entertaining. And that welcomed kids without condescending to them.

Zelda OOT is a personal fave. It's so understated, just a gentle piano and ocarina tune, with Link riding across the field.

I also liked Skyrim recently for its simplicity and for getting the blood pumping.

The handbook describes what good universities have been doing for hundreds of years, although with better perks and salary :)

And at the same time Valve is showing the way, many universities are giving up their collegial structure and adding more and more managers in order to become more corporate. Shame.
