Microsoft GDC party criticised for exotic dancers, Phil Spencer apologises

andytheadequate

@Spuzzell - you really don't get it do you? No one is having a go at the women doing the dancing (or they shouldn't be). It's the person who decided it was appropriate to book them for a corporate event. It's not just women it would make feel uncomfortable, I imagine a lot of straight males would find it a bit creepy in the circumstances.

andytheadequate

@FromTheHalfWayLine - they are clearly going for that look.

Having dancers in fairly skimpy clothing at a corporate event is seedy. I can't believe it's even an argument to think otherwise. I have nothing against people choosing to go to strip clubs (or watching exotic dancers) in their own time, but it's a bit creepy to have it at a 'normal' event.
30 3

andytheadequate

@Spuzzell - you're missing the point. This was a professional event, not just a social thing. It's not empowering for game developers to see exotic dancing regardless of gender.

For the dancers themselves, that's a different matter. If they choose to do it and feel good about themselves, then good for them.
30 5

andytheadequate

@felastica - completely agree. The morons complaining about feminism are missing the point, having dancers dressed as school girls at a corporate event is just plain creepy and weird. If you want to watch dancers in your own time then feel free, but there's a time and a place.

Street Fighter 5 sparks "censorship" debate

andytheadequate

Shit like this is why gamers still have a bad name, even though the hobby is hugely popular. Getting upset by a dev removing a butt slap, boob jiggle or lingering crotch shot is perhaps the most pathetic thing I've read. To call it censorship is just an insult to the people who campaigned (and are still campaigning) against real censorship around the word. The developer is simply changing the game so it can be played by a wider audience without them feeling ashamed; creepy man-children and teenage boys can get their kicks elsewhere, no doubt.

Warner Bros. allegedly knew about Arkham Knight PC's failures months ago - report

andytheadequate

It always amazes me how far behind the rest of software development industry the games industry is. Agile development solves so many of these issues and most respectable companies use it, yet every story you hear from the games industry seems to be stuck in the 1990s.

Frozen Cortex emerges from Early Access as full release

andytheadequate

@Boomerang - they did the same with frozen synapse and in that game only one person needed to own the dlc to play it, not both. It's not about extra sales via dlc, more about raising awareness of the game through positive feedback. After all it thrives in multiplayer so it's in their interest to get more people playing it.

The puzzles in this game were an utter pain at times, I seem to remember. Nothing ruins immersion in the story (especially such a good one like this) than being stuck for hours at a time, so using a guide when needed is much more preferable than soldiering on.

@evild_edd - a bit of both. Games are so much more complex now compared to what they used to be so there is bound to be more bugs, but in the age of the internet it's a lot easier to find out about buggy games so you're more aware of them.

Of course, feel free to just call them Chav scum if you want.

Hardline has the most promising Battlefield campaign since Bad Company

andytheadequate

Unless it has proper destruction and multiplayer maps that are designed for rush as well as conquest, it can't really be compared to Bad Company.

I'm sure the single player in this will be better than 3 or 4, but that's hardly the most difficult task is it? BF3 was so bad that I wasn't even annoyed when it lost my game save on the final mission, I was just pleased I didn't have to play any more of it.

The campaign in BC1 and 2 were alright, but they're only seen to be good in hindsight due to what came after them.

Trials Fusion to receive free eight-player online multiplayer this year

andytheadequate

@IronSoldier - The gold edition on PC includes 4 DLCs from Evo and HD. They're only free on the PC because it came out 4 years later. The problem with Fusion is that the DLC is slightly more expensive but you get far fewer tracks than in the older games.

Still, a great game overall, just not as good as Evo.

EA execs off the hook in Battlefield 4 'you lied to inflate share price' lawsuit

andytheadequate

BF4 was a disaster and didn't deserve a 8, but didn't it lead to EG and other websites changing their review policy for multiplayer games? Haven't they already fixed the the inherent problem, that the performance of multiplayer games when released can vary dramatically from a reviewers event.

The other problem with marking down games due to bugs is that it's possible to be lucky and avoid them. For example, I played Red Dead Redemption for 30 hours buy only spotted 1 minor bug, whereas other people had horses riding men through towns and the like. If the reviewer is lucky enough to not encounter the bugs, then how can they mark the game down?

I don't understand why the people who believe gamergate is actually about game journalism ethics don't abandon that hashtag and create a new one. They can then create a manifesto and implicitly state what they do and don't believe in.

They have some valid points but their movement is tarnished by the horrific abuse of Zoe Quinn and others a few months ago. If they really do care about game journalism ethics and not just abusing people, then they desperately need to separate themself from the vile idiots

Trials Fusion: Welcome to the Abyss expansion release date

andytheadequate

For me, the game is far less enjoyable now that the leaderboard competition is split up. Playing on the 360, if you got a good time it was a real achievement. Now it's harder to tell how good it is as the leaderboards are spread over 4 formats. Surely the one benefit of uplay should have been the ability to merge the leaderboards?

@Thrice87 - the problem with AAA games is that their budget is so huge that they need to sell 5 million plus just to make any profit.

Cinematic games seem to be incredibly costly to make, even if their mechanics are basic. I'm sure I heard somewhere that the campaign in BF3 cost far more than the multiplayer to develop, and the campaign was only 4 hours long and utterly dreadful

Monaco and Halo: Reach headline September's Games with Gold offerings

andytheadequate

@shortyluke2010 - whoops, sorry!

Monaco does take a bit of time to get into. The systems work absolutely perfectly but it doesn't explain anything, it lets you figure them out by giving visual clues. A good example is how the hacking works, if you watch carefully you will see that it follows you round, but if you don't pay attention it just looks to be utterly random. Took me a fair few hours to spot that.
