BattleTech review - long overdue turn-based spin on a strategy great

Zapatero

@nuanimal Sorry. Eve jargon. Try to only take on one target at a time, en masse, while trying to line the next one up. Which usually requires leading the others on a merry dance until you're ready to reign the next one in.

@Doomspoon If you approach battles like in XCOM, where you stagger your advance and use cover to guard entry points, you'll win but casualties will be too high. Blob and kite is the way to go in BattleTech, since you always pick up the enemy on your sensors. As a tactic it rather lacks finesse and style, I guess, but then you get into the groove of trying to minimise lasting damage and injury and that has its own challenge and reward.

LawBreakers developer confirms that it's now focussing on "other projects"

Zapatero

@kevinbeaumont Ah, so a game has to be released in a box for a console and abandoned within a year to be worthy of media scrutiny. Listen, there are numerous games that maybe don't make your strict definition, but were nonetheless abandoned by players long before the developer gave up on them. It's called "a lack of interest" and it comes to every game eventually.

@kevinbeaumont You make it seem as if games dying within a year is a new thing that needs investigating. Look up Shattered Horizon and Dust 514... Hell, look up MMORPGs, which is more of a graveyard than a genre these days.

Best PlayStation VR games: The 15 best PSVR games you really have to play

Zapatero

That's a really good selection, actually. Hard to fault. Initially I hated Doom VFR's weird mix of controls, but when it clicks it's glorious.

If you like space games, Valkyrie (if you enjoy the Eve universe) and End Space are pretty good. Would be nice to have a PSVR edition of Elite, but I gather it's unlikely to happen on current hardware.

**edit**
How could I forget Star Wars Battlefront!? It's only one DLC mission, but it's better than all the PSVR space games put together!

Outcast was a much better game than Academy, despite the wait for Jedi powers.

As an aside, my Outcast review for PC Zone (RIP) was so overloaded with Star Wars references and puns that that there was barely any review to speak of. Ah, the good old days...

Odd war of words erupts in the messy world of Star Control

Zapatero

If Brad Wardell were an evil villain, obtaining Star Control was his "with this I can take over the world!" moment. But then he got his hands on it and things weren't so simple. You can deploy your best minions towards making it appear functional, but for such a singular device to work you need the original scientists on board. In this case, thankfully, the scientists want to do the business, just not from an evil lair above a shark tank. :)

More seriously, I see this as posturing from both sides. TFB want to make a sequel but need resources. Stardock has the resource and wants total ownership. Either a compromise will follow, or we go to Kickstarter.

There was an MMO called Seed back in 2006 that I was told had an SS13 vibe - at least, the few people I knew that were into SS13 were also into Seed. It did launch, although it didn't last very long - six months or so.

I wouldn't be surprised if Dust 514 HD-Lite (or whatever the PC shooter is called) is quietly dropped as well. Eve is never going to take over the world and while concentrating on some mobile 4X thing is very un-CCP, it's probably the only way forward.

Zapatero

I dunno man. I love CCP to bits, precisely because they are pretty fearless, but it's gone down more development dead ends than I care to remember: cross-genre/platform F2P (Dust), VR, Incarna, World of Darkness... All brave stuff, exciting stuff, that pretty much went nowhere.

I think this is the third big layoff since 2011. If CCP does last 30 years, I fear Hilmar will be the only one left.

@internisus They are categorised, or, rather, nested, but the mission texts are quite vague in places and references overlap, so it's actually a faff to have to rely on the categorisation itself. Not sure if it was PB's intention, but it's a novel subversion :)

Fractured Space review

Zapatero

@Sagara_Sousuke_x It's actually handled well: It's free to download and you have access to three decent ships, from which you can grind the in-game credits to unlock the others, or of course buy the ones you want. Gold stuff is limited to skins, some of which increase your XP/in-game credits, which just hastens unlocking the sidegrades. There's no gold ammo, a la WOT.

I bought the Armada pack, which gives you all of the ships and is as far as my investment will go. Happy with it so far.

Looking for an alternative space sim? Meet Evochron Legacy

Zapatero

@michaelchewning The doofus author probably based his observation on the fact the the two biggest space games are fuelled by "unseemly" vanity sales and microtransactions, while the maker of Evochron has suggested the game might represent the end of an era, development-wise.

@PlugMonkey You answered your own question, but you also make an interesting point that goes beyond the age-old style vs substance debate. Elite's style is substantial. Evochron's substance is positively dowdy.

@wstephens0n You have modules in EL, but how many you can fit depends on a kind of build point system, divided across 6 or 7 categories: crew quarters (science and navigation officers are pretty neat), primary weapons, fuel cells, cargo bays, etc.

The starter ship has 15 points, and you can rearrange them across the categories as you see fit, cheaply and easily (in any station). The maximum is 10 per category though - for all ships.

So, for example, if you want to trade or mine, you might spend 10 points on cargo bays, 2 on fuel cells, 0 weapons, 3 equipment modules etc. To explore, maybe 6 or 7 points on fuel cells.

The point is that's is cheap and easy to retool a ship without having to grind a new one. It's a neat system. I wouldn't say it's better than ED, but the game feels less restrictive and less of a grind as a result.

Rainbow Six Siege to add separate Hardcore playlist in 2016

Zapatero

I've not enjoyed MP shootery of this kind since the early days of pre-Valve CS. In fact, until Siege came along, I'd resigned myself to a life of playing World of Tanks (which is effectively CS on mobility scooters).

Oddly I find the 5v5 limitation enforces a sense of quiet teamwork in casual matches that I've not experienced in other like-minded games. I'm not sure why that is. Perhaps it's because losing is as much fun as winning. Or maybe I'm not the only mature FPS fan with dull reflexes who's found a new sunshine home.
