Pigsy's Perfect 10 for Enslaved.

Told a small, well contained story for one of the few members of the story. A bit of comic relief with a nice light hearted moral. Yes, it was a little hard but it introduced completely new play styles to the game and made you look at the same enemies in an entirely different light.

@twot

Who the hell do you think you are you complete twot. You strut about accusing people of trying to get into someone else's pants and then when they deign to say anything about you you say they know nothing about you. You lazily write that a woman should write in Cosmos because they don't perceive an industry in the same light you do. You write like you're actually *someone*.

This is what you sound like. If the article attacks the game relentlessly, then you attack the article relentlessly. For all your bull, you're probably the most toxic person involved.

True, but that press is often what Kickstarters feed off of. Otherwise nearly all but the most famous wouldn't reach funding. Its part of the nature of the beast. Ultimately I don't think its out of order to say "we have too many kickstarters" in a hyperbolic/joking sort of way.

Also I think we have too much sun in the UK right now, but I'm not wishing for an eclipse/for it to start pissing with rain.

Ellie seems to hate everything to do with monetisation and things that are new (a novel standpoint for someone who loved farmville/social media games).

I have to say though, I'm pretty sick of Kickstarters too. Far too many flooding news sites and twitter. Still easier to ignore than to complain is my policy.

Also your example of homeless people is a pretty clear exaggeration, taking Ellie's initial hyperbole of "the world doesn't need any more kickstarter campaigns" to whole new heights.

Hmmm. To be expected really. Were we hoping for it to be reviewed as a game or as a remake? I imagine as a remake it sounds very much like a success, and Rockpapershotgun's "Wot I think" is a lot less critical because it tries to appraise it in that light. But as a game being released in 2013... oh dear.

Asus FonePad review

Velocityraptor

@Chato If you use it as a phone can you carry it with you all the time? Do you always have your bag on you? I just can't imagine having a 7.7 inch tablet in my pocket.

I'm a student so I've got a bag with me most days for notes etc., but if I'm not working, I really can't be arsed to carry around even a small tablet/bag for when I need to phone for a cab home.

As for the FonePad, I liked the idea about a year ago. But I was recently given an iPad mini and I don't really use it much. It feels like I'm not someone who uses or feels the benefits of a tablet.

Seems like you'd criticize anything he said and you'd criticize him for not saying anything. At the very least let no comment mean no comment. Its not like he's on trial.

Add money to the $1.6m Dota 2 International prize pool by buying a "living" virtual book

Velocityraptor

8 years ago

@Commander_Kryton
Despite the massive amounts of negs that we'll both receive for this... I kind of agree.

It feels a bit too much like a grind in the same way that an MMORPG is a grind to me. I feel like I've seen it all before and the frustration outweighs joy. I still watch the occasional match, but I admit it is a waste of time: I could get far more enjoyment spending that time watching/playing something else. There was a time where I spent more time than I could afford on DOTA, not life destroying but enough that I would look on my time and think where has the past 2 hours gone?

Perhaps its because I'm also a person who doesn't enjoy watching sport in general, and as more of my friends are interested in games (and me likewise) I have fewer people to talk about this stuff with. I don't think everyone will think like me, but I think there might be a few out there.

Belayed potential: The art of videogame climbing

Velocityraptor

9 years ago

Funnily enough the first time I climbed reminded me of games. When you're doing indoor routes with colour coded handholds, the issue is simplified to "how do I get there?" rather than what moves do I need to do/bloody hell its taking all my strength to hold this position, in much the same way grabbable bits in games like uncharted etc glow or stand out from the environment. But looking back most of those had massive holds that meant you were always secure, and feature climbing feels like a completely different beast, at least to me.

I would also note the lack of appropriate climbing footwear for game characters.

Season Two of Telltale's The Walking Dead "aiming for" THIS autumn

Velocityraptor

9 years ago

@Moz

But if you're waiting/in development over 20 months anyway, cash flow doesn't seem too much of an immediate issue. It makes sense where they only have one project in the pipeline and if theres an actual need for that funding to reach the next episode release. Like I said I don't know what they do with that month between episodes, but unless its something that can't be done earlier, it'd probably be cheaper to do it all in one go. Hiring the actors to knock out all the dialogue over as short a time as possible, rather than getting them to come back once a month to record new stuff.

People trying the game via episode 1 is fair enough, but I don't see how you can't still sell that first episode as stand alone anyway, even if you release the rest of the game in one go.

Velocityraptor

@rob_of_the_robots

True, but it depends on what they're planning to do with the game. I can't imagine it's going to use a new engine or have new gameplay (nothing wrong with that- TT seem to succeed or fail depending on the writing). With that in mind, I suspect the time frame may be more to do with TellTale having quite a few other games in the works.
2 0

Velocityraptor

9 years ago

I always wonder how much of TellTale's episodic content is made before hand. Presumably the storyboard and scripts for all 5 are ready by the time they release the first, but have they recorded all the voice work? How much tweaking can they do to audience response?

Also, if in this case, the game is set to take something like 20 months, would it be better to just wait the extra 5 and release it all in one go?

BioWare's "increasingly toxic" forum repels Dragon Age writer David Gaider

Velocityraptor

9 years ago

@Djimm

See loyalty cards aren't to reward loyalty but falsify the value of it making sure you come back to spend/get those extra points- they don't believe that people come back just for the sake of the name alone. We should objectively make decisions about games (and each purchase for that matter)- if your favourite developer decided to make a game that wasn't to your genre tastes, good game or not, would you still buy it?

I'd argue good games don't sell automatically, but that they have a better chance than bad games. I'd argue its one thing for a game to be brought to your attention because of its developer, and another to believe it should be an instant purchase, tailored for you. Most of all I'd argue that it's only your perceived concept of loyalty that would allow a company to trade on name alone.

PS. I won't be replying to any responses, not because I'm snubbing you but more because I've spent too much time on this topic thread, but I'll be reading the response.

What?! So the people can decry Biowares decisions, but they can't decry their audiences? Bullshit. You can't have it both ways. Either we can complain about them and they can complain about us or no one gets to complain (frankly I like the sound of the second). They owe you NOTHING. They made a game, you bought it, all you're "owed" is what's in your shopping basket.

There was once a time where gaming for me was a social thing, a talking point between my friends and I and something to do while we hung out. Back then the gaming community (for me) was literally 4 guys who tried to figure out how the hell we could beat the Tiberium Sun AI in an even fight (or whatever). Now the gaming community has grown into a clusterfuck of voices all screaming to be heard over each other, with increasing level of extremity. And whether its hyperbole over how outraged they are or they honestly are so entitled that they whinge incessantly and threateningly over what they were owed, its still worrying.

Modern gaming is a big place, probably too big for the likes of me and I find myself becoming increasingly distant from it as time goes on. And you know what? Thats fine. Stuff changes. I just hope we're/you're happy with the culture created.

That's actually pretty impressive. I have a feeling battery life and heat are going to cause problems though.

As much as I want one (I plan to buy an all-in-one type of device one day), I'm not in the market to buy within the next year and an eGPU/mouse/keyboard/screen dock set up with an ultrabook/tablet seems far more practical. Keeps the heat away, allows the ability to upgrade and while you won't be able to game intensively on the go that doesn't really fit my needs.

Primordia review

Velocityraptor

9 years ago

@karlo87 But have you seen AGS games go to consoles?

Its not about elitism, at least not for me. Most people who own a PC should be able to play Primordia. If these people are able to access the game (even if its not on the preferred platform), and the cost to the small independent developer is so great is there any point in a port?
0 0

Velocityraptor

I always keep an eye out for games published by Wadjet eye, and having enjoyed all the Blackwell games (to date), Resonance and Gemini Rue, they haven't let me down yet! I'll probably pick up Primordia at some stage, once I have a little more time on my hands.

As for playing on PC... its really not that intensive, no AGS games are (to my knowledge). I'm really impressed with what people can achieve with AGS actually. While Machinarium (built in Flash I think) was clearly a pretty game, I preferred the lo-res art from Blackwell.

Aren't most of the bosses (or at least one) pretty much impossible to complete with just melee? Pistol+ stealth is probably the best and tranquiliser bullets are rarely in short supply.

Alpha protocol is probably my most completed game (3 run throughs). Possibly my favourite game ever; all its dodgy gameplay faults clicked together (I had no mini-game issues, maybe because I was used to being frustrated by my dodgy mouse at the time and only 1 bug- a CTD that sorted itself) letting the best bits shine.

Mutant Mudds dev concerned by potential Nintendo 3DS piracy

Velocityraptor

9 years ago

Piracy is an issue, but how much and working out exact figures is too difficult (read impossible) to be worth stressing out for the consumers (and from the sound of it most publishers).

Developers can do whatever the hell they want. You don't feel its worth it due to "pirates"? Fine. Release your game elsewhere/try a different line of work. We have no right to your work, and you have no obligation to give it to us.

Everything balances out in the end. If piracy is as rampant as we're informed, the games industry should collapse in a few years (if not several years ago), in which case the toys are out of the pram and we will neither get nor deserve nice things. If, even with pirates, (regardless of specific numbers) the industry is still going then things will keep on keeping on.

Developers' Games of 2012

Velocityraptor

9 years ago

I find it fascinating when people try to tell others why their favourite game of the year is wrong. I hate all the games you like too! It looks like we have reached an impasse. Good thing neither of us is going to fruitlessly try to prove the other side wrong.

Oh wait...

More relevantly, good year for games this year. I enjoyed Journey enough to keep it installed, but probably won't replay it for a very long time. For me Journey was very much a one way trip- the highs and lows, the discovery of an unexplored world all of these things would probably have diminishing returns.

New Star Soccer, (I'm assuming the iOS/android version is different from the PC version in the above youtube video) was great. First year I've owned a properly nice android phone (I was/am a relic in many ways) and so few games have understood the nature of pick-up/put down gameplay and melded it with a decent meta-game.

Games of 2012: Dishonored

Velocityraptor

9 years ago

SPOILERS
Probably my favourite game of the year. So many people have gone over the strengths of the gameplay, and derided the plot which means it misses the top spot. I actually quite liked the plot though.

It had the "power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely" feel. First with the Lord Regent, then with the conspirators and in fact all of the nobles were rotten to the core. Only the empress seemed unaffected and not only did we not see much of her, but she dies as a result of her failure to capitalise on her power.

The theme continues with Corvo. The chance and ability to kill everyone, versus a more tricky stealthy approach. As a pacifist Corvo (for the most part) I liked to think I was breaking the cycle by setting an example for Emily. This was a view somewhat vindicated by my ending video.

Skyrim's Hearthfire DLC weighs just 75MB, out now

Velocityraptor

9 years ago

@RevanNL

Really? Wow, they weren't even very high quality re-textures (though in hindsight 75MB of horse retextures would've been ridiculous).

I guess what I'm saying is it'll be interesting to see if this can actually be a positive additon to the experience.
1 0

Velocityraptor

9 years ago

Oh, so value for money is measured by pence per megabyte now. Oh good. Its not like pounds per hour was ridiculous enough.

Given that is sounds like this contains no extra voice acting, models or textures, 75mb is about right. One of my essential mods for Oblivion was sub-50MB, included new combat moves, horse-back combat, and tweaked the balance of combat. And yes, I would've easily paid 4 quid for it.

This is not horse armour: in fact its probably smaller than horse armour in size. But if it actually changes gameplay and allows a more immersive experience it has the potential to be much much better value for money. The jury is out until release.

As for an apology accepting idiocy, perhaps. Absolution doesn't come cheaply makes you sound like you want a pound of flesh though. He said something silly- it really does sound like he was talking about his girlfriend in particular - but its still something he can't afford to let slip to the press even in a jokey anecdotal way and an apology seems penance enough.

If he is to represent the whole of gamings sexism and stand trail for that... well come out and say it.

I'm not going to jump or shout about this. It's been a long day and I have better things to do. I do have several things to mumble before I chill out with some cider though.

1) It is a little bit of click bait, though isn't it? In the sense that nearly every post is designed to be clickbait. It also occurs to me that the most commented articles on eurogamer tend to be either sexism related, or some kid spending his dads money on gaming.

2) Yes it is offensive, but not in an earth changing way- more patronising than out and out offensive insults. Less so than the blatant mysogyny within the games anyway.

3) If an apology was offered, would we put the pitchforks away and go home?
