Get four free games from Humble at the moment

TonyB

@JamieW I agree that it currently isn't clear enough, by the end of the second paragraph I really don't think it's obvious whether you need to be a subscriber or not. There's a lot of implicit stuff that these games are different to the rest of the trove, but nothing explicitly calls that out and it does leave things feeling a bit ambiguous. Just ending the second paragraph with something along the lines of "... but Humble have made these four free to those without a subscription too" would remove any such ambiguity.

Hellblade wins big at the Baftas

TonyB

As someone who was there representing one of the nominees there were three big disappointments from the night for me (none of which was the game I was representing not winning, that was expected):

1) I didn't get to speak to Tim Schafer.
2) As far as I could tell Claudia Black wasn't there.
3) I wasn't able to inform Aoife Wilson that she appeared to be a level 2 helmet.

Admittedly 1 and 3 could probably have been resolved by more actively seeking out the respective people (and doing so may also have proved 2 to be incorrect), I couldn't hang around too long as I had to work to today and there was beef and wine that wasn't going to consume itself.

I don't think anyone's ever doubted that Shadow of the Colossus is one of the all-time greats
*raises hand*

I never got on with SotC, I tried to like it (got as far as some water-based colossus) but eventually I got so aggravated with its controls and structure that I lost interest in persevering with the boss fights and I'd stopped caring about the atmosphere and story. The awe of seeing what new creatures were to come just didn't seem worth the pain.

TonyB

@davetobin This is the key point for me, and unfortunately I think the interview missed one important question because of that: if context is so key to why this scene is important to the game as a whole, why did you/the marketing team decide to pull it out and show it to everyone without that context?

@wyp100 What about his comments make you believe he deserves the rethink he calls for? To me (and it seems pretty much everyone else in the comments) his own quotes are still damning him. As pointed out earlier in the thread by andyhair, the key part is that he still doesn't care about the effect what he's doing has on anyone else's enjoyment, he's only out for himself. Ultimately, that's the issue people have with any cheater.

How developers really deal with bugs

TonyB

@ofmana Also, if vert1go is sending bugs about shit-looking trees to programmers they're probably going "why is this art bug continuing to come back to code, is this person expecting us to manually change the look of that asset each time it's encountered in the game?"

(I'm ignoring the possibility that the game in question uses procedural tree generation, in which case fair enough.)

Edit: Damn you FuffleTheKitten, why aren't you too busy programming to reply quickly?

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice review

TonyB

Covering much the same ground as several people have already, but what exactly was wrong with Ace Attorney Investigations? Just like Mr. Walker in the linked review, I was bursting with happiness while playing it. I've given serious consideration to the statement in this review being a slightly clumsy veiled reference to the sequel never getting a Western release.

Also, it seems a bit churlish to complain about the series never changing and then in the same breath complain about when it tried something a bit different.

Knightmare had to be there, both because the game is so infuriating and because it's the greatest TV show of all time (that's correct, I deliberately didn't have the "kids" qualifier on that). There was another Knightmare game on ST/Amiga that was a lot better (a decent enough Dungeon Master-clone) but had almost nothing to do with the original show.

Warning: The Witcher 3 GOTY Edition won't let you carry over save data

TonyB

@One_Vurfed_Gwrx Again, the developer can set things up so the digital and disc versions have the same saves (in fact on the current generation of consoles it's more work to make them separate), so that's not really one to blame on Sony. Region-unlocked saves is more complex as you say (ensuring patching one region doesn't break the other being the biggest headache).
1 0

TonyB

@kangarootoo MS and Sony are actually quite different in how this works - the latter always uses different product IDs for different releases of the same game for instance. However, speaking from personal experience, it is possible on each to both maintain save compatibility and keep achievement/trophy lists intact.

What's presumably happened is that they didn't set things up with the right sharing of services/as part of the same product family, which can quickly make the latter impossible and the former require considerably more hoops to make available. I'd guess they only found out the knock-on effects of how they set things up when they were way too far down the road to submission to restart initial processes and recreate the products in the preferable way.

@Bertie Can you just change the headline? The standard comeback when there are complaints about the content of articles is "you don't have to click on them", but in this case you've said something very specific (even if on its own there's no explanation as to why) before the reader has clicked on it.

Edit: That headline still doesn't work! You've still been specific about what item is being considered important.
3 2

TonyB

@ChrisTapsellEG I'm on the side of sethsez and PlugMonkey et al here. Reading a guide about a game is a personal choice, there are a lot of games for which I wouldn't want to do so. To give away a specific detail about what you're advising in the headline is to deprive those of us who want to discover everything for ourselves the chance to do so because you're no longer giving us the choice of whether to read the advice or not (other than just not visiting your site).

If this were a specialist guides site my statement above might not make sense, but as this is a more generalised news site I think it's reasonable to suggest that guides should err on the side of giving away nothing unless you actively decide to click through to the article itself.
