I swear the shooting thing is already is the game, minus the trainer. Maybe it's different but if you time the double tap on fifa 18 you get a power boost. Turns it into a daisy cutter.

Far Cry 5 review - a competent yet conflicted open worlder

TheMilkman

@CheekyRobo Nobody writes a book to just fill the pages up though, they do it to tell a story. So that's the primary focus of the book.

A games primary goal is to entertain through gameplay/interactivity. Some games may be more linear and story driven, and use the narrative to drive the entire experience, and some just use it as a framework to keep the player invested in the world/sandbox. Far Cry definitely falls into the latter category.

I'm not saying the story shouldn't be judged at all, I'm just saying I think this review goes over the top with its analysis of a story which isn't going to be that important to the people who would be interested in this type of game.

@Spence1115 I must've missed all this marketing. There was some stuff about a main character that happens to be American but nothing that said to me, 'oooh we're gonna lampoon trump!'

Then the rest of it was - look at this mental map editor! We have a zombies dlc! A Vietnam dlc! A mars dlc!

I didn't see this marketing everyone's on about saying this was gonna be the new thin red line.

TheMilkman

@CrashOkami Couldn't agree more. The story and characters are just a reason for the sandbox in a game like this. They aren't the primary focus.

The history of violence buried deep in Far Cry 5's landscape

TheMilkman

@jebus I wouldn't bother going too deeply into the themes and message of a segal/van damme movie though. Which this is kind of the equivalent of.

I could understand an article like this analysing hellblade/spec ops the line or something. Far cry though? I just think of flying a unicopter bombing people from above with a grenade launcher. I don't really think it's meant to be any more than that, they just chuck in an interesting villain and setting to give a reason to the sandbox. I don't think they are trying to say anything with it to be honest.
3 2

TheMilkman

I don't get it to be honest. Is any of this even relevent?

This is a really (well written) deep analysis about a game where the main purpose is to let the player blow things up in the most fun and spectacular way possible. It's not shakespeare.

The Division update 1.7 adds global events and loot boxes

TheMilkman

@Killerbee Agree. Plus the gameplay wasn't on the same level.

The division had a ton more depth than destiny so you will always get those that like creating a build etc loving it, but ultimately that's a much smaller population of players compared to people that just like to casually shoot things in the head, and that's what destiny does so well.

Destiny: The Dawning event returns Sparrow Racing and Icebreaker

TheMilkman

@AgentDaleCooper nah, it'll be worse than that. They would be described as missions. 'Quest' in destiny terms is to just do a few things that are already in the game in a certain order and you get a shader or something.

Still, I liked sparrow racing last time so I'll play this.

FIFA 17 - the football game where you're better off letting the AI defend for you

TheMilkman

@Joonlar Totally disagree there. The collision engine in FIFA is better than it was but it's still pretty terrible with players just stupidly running into each other and knocking each other over. The ball physics aren't the best either. General passing and shooting is ok, but every ball interaction feels like it's tied to a player or the touchline - you never see the ball just stop at a random spot on the field, it always has to go to a 'result' situation. I think that's why people complain about scripting, it's simply because the ball physics often look really dodgy and it feels unfair.

Long balls too. They just look wrong imo. Like you're booting a fly away.

TheMilkman

@jabberwocky Couldn't agree more. I really liked the tactical defending from fifa 12 up to 14, but they have taken more control away from defending every year since.

It just feels like fan service. It's not going to attract anyone new but it's put out to make some dosh and keep the current players happy for a while.

It's a worry how they have taken a step back in terms of leveling up though. I do think the events they do will make leveling easier hopefully.

TheMilkman

@Boomerang Personally I agree with you but the whole leveling up process is the fun for a lot of people.

I feel like I should do this exploit to get ready for the raid, but I'd rather play supremacy instead. Well, I'd rather have a go on archons forge but that seems bloody impossible. Can't find the offerings anywhere and there's no one ever there in patrol.

FIFA 17 review

TheMilkman

@Syrette Normally I'd agree, but for me the fundamentals in fifa are bad enough that it's not worth continuing.

Most years I'd want to give it a while to judge, but just from the demo fifa felt really poor to me this year. You need decent Base gameplay for it to be worth finding the nuances/problems. It just doesn't have it for my money.
1 0

TheMilkman

@Syrette that's the thing though, even though it's commonly accepted it's the inferior game this year it's still being overrated in my opinion.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with having an opinion on the game after playing the demo, that's the point of having the demo in the first place.

My criticism is coming from someone who buys footy games every year, and was a huge fan of fifa between 09 and 14. It's terrible. The gameplay is awful, and it annoys me as someone that previously got 100s of hours out of it every year. The defending had been terrible for 3 years now, and playing the cpu is just a disaster.

To me it's just gone miles and miles down hill and it's just getting worse. I honestly believe it's as bad as it was 10 years ago now.
2 1

TheMilkman

I totally agree with this review. The last good FIFA was FIFA 14 and its been on a steady decline since then. Its now back at the point of years and years ago were it was actually officially crap. Like FIFA 2004 etc.

Everything just feels wrong, little weird details like the speed of the ball movement compared to the speed of player movement feels off, like gravity is really strong or something.

I got 5 years of loving FIFA between 2009 and 2014, but the gap in quality between FIFA and PES is back to what it was 10 years ago now IMO.

Big changes are coming to The Division

TheMilkman

@Achtung_Englander yeh it's good right up until the end. It's just the endgame after you've finished is no good. It looks like they are improving this though.

I'll play it again but I dunno if it'll be enough to save it. Destiny survived simply because it has really good gameplay and they built from that foundation. The division isn't really a good enough third person shooter to keep a lot of people hooked for 100s of hours I don't think. It's decent, but even games like mass effect had more fun shooting mechanics imo.

Bungie talks Destiny: Rise of Iron's future events, wolves and raid

TheMilkman

@PazJohnMitch Totally agree. I get the argument that you don't have to use the matchmaking, just give the players the choice. It just wouldn't be the same experience at all though with matchmaking. No mics/people dropping out etc. It would give a terrible impression of what a raid is. Its not casual, it needs a commitment.

That said, bungie puts so much time into these raids so they need to find a way to make them so more of the players can get in them. I just don't think basic matchmaking is the way to go. I've always liked the idea if you have 3, the game will matchmake another 3 with you but I doubt they'd do that.

It would be good if all the people on these articles that complain about no raid matchmaking just added each other and organised a raid. Problem solved!
