Epic under fire as report says Fortnite teams facing "endless" 70-hours-a-week-plus crunch

@riccyb0y she worked in the pharmaceutical industry writing data sheets for doctors and pharmacists.

Graduate level and even though it is specialized there are now millions of people globally with degrees.

Workers are competing globally for jobs.

Even machine learning projects that have people teaching the AI are based in Africa and Asia.

The BBC did a piece a few weeks back about the hidden cost of machine learning.

@ShiftyGeezer Unfortunately they will move countries and move the work to somewhere else cheaper and worse union laws.

My wife worked in a company that kept the work moving around the world so it was being worked on 24/7. It would start in India, then go to the UK at end of India day, then UK to US then the US back to India.

Then the UK office was closed as it was cheaper to put the India Office of night shifts.

@Nathan-DTS plus in the UK a company can get rid of you in the first 6 months no question asked. Plus it costs a fortune to move.

I moved into a bungalow 100 miles away as I went to a cheaper area and it cost over 10 grand to do the move.

Not something that most people can drop every few years.

We are just commodities to the upper management and as manpower is one of the more expensive parts of running a company they want what they see as "value for money".

Spec Analysis: Sony's surprise PlayStation 5 tech reveal

TheKeyToTime

@huiop2 we have no idea on the final specs are going to be.

I have a m.2 SSD drive in a usb3 caddy that I got for backups of my laptops and it's tiny.

Sony could put a caddy in where you stick a 2nd SSD drive in.

Also capacity of these things are rising with diminishing cost per gig.

I bought first gen at a pound per gig and that is still running.

Now we are at a fraction of that and who knows where the market will be in 18 months when I suspect that the console will launch.

I bought a 500 gig intel 5th generation SSD drive in a retail box for around 60 quid last month.

How much you think Sony can get them for when buying in the tens of millions of units.

People always look at the retail price and not consider how much it actually costs to make especially as it will be OEM packing etc.

Real-life US politician banned from Eve Online for alleged corruption

TheKeyToTime

Can't say I'm surprised EVE always had some people wanting to exploit something somehow.

Our corp was the first in game to get a Battleship blueprint (shows how long ago I was playing) and our whole guild had ground out the money out for it and then suddenly just as we bought it our guild leader was approached by somebody willing to pay actual real world cash for it rather than do what we did and get it via the game.

There was also another player going around getting vault access robbing the corp blind and then ransoming the stuff back to the corp and then moving on to the next victim.

Coupled with all the greifers such as MOO etc and I left as although it was a lovely game it also had serious problems as well.

@Bauul Apart from the fact that the wholesale and high street rate has jumped this week.

Yup just checked and the rate is at the highest for almost 2 years.

@DreadedWalrus well I was using a Windows enviroment in 1987 with the Acorn Archimedes and even further back the BBC Micro had a mouse and window OS for CAD and word processing.

Also I always preferred DR DOS to MS DOS.

TheKeyToTime

@GamesConnoisseur that's the problem the announcement comes on a strong surge in the pounds value this week

Wholesale rate this week has been nudging 1.18 and I bought 1.15 at Thomas Cook yesterday.

So saying it's due to a weak pound doesn't really cut it.
4 18

TheKeyToTime

Well MS has to get the money back for all the refunds they are having to do from closing their online bookstore.

I assume this is a nice excuse for a bit of price gouging since the Euro has suddenly weakened this week to the Pound.

I got 1.15 Euro's to the pound yesterday at Thomas Cook which has been nice as I am off to Paris next week for Easter.

Edit ooo the MS fanboys are out in strength or is it just all the customers from the MS book store that negged me?

@Rumteldat Problem with my union that it was worse than the management.

They had cosyied up to the managers and were happy taking the union fees and having nice big salaries and yet claiming that the 2% pay rise was the best that they could do when next door the council office workers with the same union and same negotiators got them 7% and they had the cheek to tell them to reject that as it was a derisory amount and they all got more than we did.

So I am not convinced about blanked unionization.

The problem runs even deeper, universities are running computer game programming degrees as well as the more pedestrian and useful Computer Science.

There is a huge amount of 20 somethings desperate to enter the industry and will do pretty much anything to get into the door so all the shitty practices can be carried out by all the publishers and seniors managers as they know they can get replacements at a drop of a hat.

Yet my brother worked in non game programming and that part of the industry is screaming for talent but it's not sexy saying you have worked on MS Office.

The exact same thing happened with forensic science, my wife worked as a forensic scientist with a normal science degree for 10 years, there was about 10-20 jobs a year in the field yet the universities were graduating thousands of people a year with forensic science degrees which were next to useless and in the end there was a major change in technology which saw a massive lay off of people in favor of automation anyways which my wife was one of the many casualties.

Same crap different industry.

@nialldunmore especially as steam isn't a monopoly as their keys are available everywhere.

I tend to use humble as I get a subscriber discount.

I suspect that Epic may be looking at humble to give away their keys that they had to buy as part of their agreed sales and claw some money back on the tax due to the charity aspect of Humble.

They can also report every game given away as "sold" on their quarterly reports.
