PlayStation 5: when can Sony truly deliver a generational leap in power?

TheJuriel

I just want something that is reliably quiet and cool. I cannot even buy a Pro because it's a shoddy piece of craftmanship, and you have a 50/50 shot of getting a jet engine.

So I wish we got a 'generational leap' in something other than just pure processing power, too. At least with the current-gen, MS and Sony finally started putting reasonable amounts of RAM into their machines, so that's a trend I am all for.

Backwards compatibility makes great sense during the launch window. It's a much faster adoption rate if people can bring their old libraries forwards (with boosts), rather than have the one or two actually good new games to tide them over for the entire first year, as has been the case with every console launch so far.

God of War review: astonishing technological craft in the service of simple pleasures

TheJuriel

I like that they changed the GoW formula with at least the camera angle, but it just looks so generic, like it's lacking its own hook. Kratos himself never was a selling point for me, but at least now I can pretend he's a viking dad.

I'll play this at some point if they put in a photo mode.

Shadow of War developer discusses the game's controversial loot boxes

TheJuriel

What a weird spot to be in. I trust the devs to not want bullshit like this in, but the publisher pushing it hard, and then you end up defending shit you don't believe in, because hail corporate.

In any case, these microtransactions made me not get the game, despite loving Shadow of Mordor. I just cannot trust them not warping the game design.

(plus, Talion is so generic and lame it's painful, and with the customizable gear, I don't expect we'll get extra skins to switch into this time around)

BioWare issues statement on Mass Effect Andromeda future

TheJuriel

I don't know what all the online bitching is about, the game is great!

Provided you don't expect to be able to choose Ryder's personality like you could Shepard's. Just accept they're an established (joking, full-Paragon) character, move on.

Yes, animations get janky, and there is a lack of oomph to pivotal moments, and the writing is often awkward... but this is still closer to ME1 than other MEs. Though ME1 actually handled its story and writing and worldbuilding better, ten years ago.

Mass Effect 2 and the importance of character

TheJuriel

The problems that make ME3 the shitshow it is, began with ME2. But since they weren't in full bloom yet, it manages to be a good experience...

In spite of its 'story' being you picking up a dozen people (of which you will actually use only two), while nothing else happens, and at the end of it, the state of things is exactly the same as at the end of ME1.

God, I miss ME1, and what true successors to it could've been like.

Mass Effect: Andromeda review

TheJuriel

@AgentDaleCooper Why ME3 is bad (without spoilers): it reduces player agency heavily in favor of a writer wanting you to drool over how cool their pet NPC is, has a deus ex machina that even everyone in the game talks about as a deus ex machina, everyone is passing around the idiot ball, you only fight the same faction's same goons 90% of the game, layered characters like Udina are reduced to their one-note characteristics, your past actions are ignored (you killed someone in ME1 or ME2? uh here's a robot version of them then!), its whole tone is at odds with both earlier parts (going for a melancholy tone that the writers are too bad to actually evoke, so they just use brute force), the ending is just a giant middle finger to the players...

There's a good article series about the ME series, but it's long and goes through them in order, in detail (so, spoilers): http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=27792

These costs would make sense in a free to play game... Not a sold product, where pushing towards microtransactions is just dickery.

That said, you only 'need' a few. Pick the best emotes/mythic outfit, rely on equipment drops rather than upgrades, and you can have one character with the essentials for every few weeks of casual daily-missions play.

How does XCOM 2 perform on consoles?

TheJuriel

@Bratterz I'd love to know how much involvement Firaxis had with the console version. Which could really use an UI scaling slider, so it doesn't cover half the screen.

And whether the console versions get patch support at all, or if it's just dumped out in the cold as-is, seeing how they didn't market it any (not even review copies or screenshots, what)...

Played it for most of yesterday on PS4. It works fine, controls fine and looks fine, as long as one can put up with occasional jerkiness/pausing/unsteady framerate, and frequent screen-tearing. It's an alright port (and running better than on my PC), but certainly not an ambitious one (no added features, no built-in mods, UI covers too much of the screen, load times are long).

"We have to do better when we launch NX"

After WiiU being released to die, and this generation already having big userbases on existing consoles, I just don't see NX working out. People already have tablets/phones, the portability is not a selling point!

That goddamn Nintendo stubbornness of sticking to their own hardware, rather than making use of the existing Xbone/PS market. What do they have against making so much more money?

After a wave of fan outcry, Respawn is making big changes to Titanfall 2

TheJuriel

As a fan of the original (which by the way sold way above expectations, people calling it a failure), I was looking forward to Titanfall 2, until I played the tech test...

They reduced the whole parkour vibe to force people to walk around (buildings are farther apart, cannot walljump across them through the whole map), they made titans weaker and rarer, they removed the boost cards that made up half of your gear options, they removed the AI grunts that lent the original a lot of its air and served as fun target dummies while running from place to place (and were affiliated with either faction, so you could also hack them), they clearly mark enemy pilots now (so no hiding, and no grunts to distract opponents), the time to kill is ridiculously short (no chance to react, whoever fires off one burst first wins, rewards camping), new rodeo is not fun (only used to steal enemy shield batteries for your ally titans, which means winning team will snowball harder), there is no more Attrition mode (the primary game mode of the first game)...

'made by people who hated the original' indeed. Granted, perhaps EA has been dictating changes from above, to make it more like CoD, but ugh. Small changes won't save this.
