Does Hellblade on Xbox One X deliver the definitive console experience?

Svalbaard

So an approximate 15m profit on development costs of 3m or so? Bravo Ninja Theory. Bravo indeed.

Just like Senua, you are putting the Hellblade to the lies of the AAA industry.

@Indielink To be fair though it's about the only thing worth playing on the Switch if you consider that the majority of titles are just rehashes of other existing Nintendo IP, so I'm not surprised it has such penetration into the Switch user base.

The Ultimate year: 12 months that forged a legend

Svalbaard

Arrrrrr, stop it Eurogamer. You are deliberately trying to make me feel old aren't you!!!? Apologies, but there is a rose tinted spectacle moment incoming...

So I was 11 when the Spectrum came out and I got my one the next year for Christmas. I have totally fond memories of all of these games and would totally lose myself for hours in them and others such as Kokitoni Wilf, Tomahawk and Wizball and such like. It's amazing to think that games like Elite, Tau Ceti and Turbo Esprit for the Spectrum were coded in just 48k (we won't mention the Lenslok eh?) when the Arial font that I am writing this in on my PC is 3.5Mb alone. Yes, sometimes you needed a lot of imagination, but that has always stayed with me and has always served me well.

It really is incredible to see how far gaming has come in 35 years or so when you compare the likes of Manic Miner or Jetpac to modern classics such as Horizon Zero Dawn or God Of War. I would say however, that for both generations that grew up with these as their benchmarks, the enjoyment would be equal across both.

Can't wait to see what the next 35 years brings and am also glad that my now 18 yesr old daughter has inherited that love for gaming. Especially for a certain Ms Croft...

Well done Eurogamer. I would give you a "Crash smash" for this article, but the IP lawyers would probably be on me in a flash.

@ambershee No I can't. A "pint" by volume is a standard measure. This measure does not fluctuate depending on how many pints are being pulled, or by how many may be being drunk in the pub.

Now, it if was "up to 25g" in my bag of Pork Scratchings... thats a different thing altogether ;-)

Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds review

Svalbaard

@mega-gazz Agreed, but the original EG review was suspect to the point that it clearly stood out as simply trying too hard to be different by not agreeing with the rest of the industry that though it is magnificent. It also wasn't an overly "critical opinion" just a diatribe as to why HZD isn't The Witcher.

Svalbaard

So this "casual" gamer put about 150 hours into the original and I enjoyed every signle hour spent in that world; from completing the main storyline to finding ever more rediculous ways to take down dinobots.

When compared to Destiny 2, which by my reckoning having mistakely played it is "just another shooter which bought nothing new to the FPS genre" and the ludicrous amount coverage that that got on EG (and by that I mean "advertising bucks" obvs.) HZD in my humble opinion stands head and shoulders above it and I can't wait to get back on the road with Aloy and chums.

How does Assassin's Creed Origins on Pro improve over base PS4?

Svalbaard

@RegalWizard Hi there, no I've not really noticed any significant issues with it anywhere. That said, I'm (A) approaching it in a very casual manner, (B) still not that far into it and (C) am not the sort of player that studies every nuance in the way that Digital Foundry might.

Having given AC a wide berth since Black Flag. I've been playing ACO on PS4Pro over the weekend. It's no HZD but it looks awesome and plays perfectly well to me. I think from a "gameplay" perspective a lot of the commentary on the video is pretty nit-picky bollocks

Couldn't care less about X1X, but I'm interested in the following as I'm assuming that this special trial will be a "value add" cost add-on :

A) Which time zone is being specified?
B) In the event of a challenge, who is the arbiter of what time the actual delivery was made?
C) What is the contract penalty clause is if Argos deliver at 00:02?

Digital Foundry: the best 2017 4K TVs for HDR gaming

Svalbaard

I did quite a bit of comparison before I splashed the 750 on my Sony 49XD8305 4k UHD last January. In that size range I just couldn't see the difference between that one, and more expensive 1000+ models.

I primarily bought it in preparation for HZD, and I still can't see how another more expensive TV in that size range could make that game, or the 4k content that I've watched on it look any better.

I did make a point of going to have a look at the Sony A1E OLED on release, and that is a bloody stunning piece of TV kit - but then again it carries a 3500 price tag so I should think so.

Kind of puts the lie to the shit Sony and MS were shilling about a few years ago that online gaming and services would make the whole purchase and play experience overall cheaper for the consumer as it cuts out all of the middleware packaging and distribution costs.

Thankfully I never bought that, and as I generally don't like people I have no need to play online...

...I just have to make do with playing with myself ;)

Sports Direct buys chunk of GAME

Svalbaard

@BobbyDeNiro My first reaction was Game + Sports Direct could equal a venture into an eSports team perhaps? A growing industry with lots of cash flying about isn't such a daft thought.

Then again, Game is still a profitable business, with plenty of valuable business assets including a huge customer database which is goldust if mined correctly. Put that with a cash injection for a big rebrand and an overhaul of the customer experience and he obviously sees it as a good investment.

Personally, I've been shopping at Game for years and never had a single issue with them. Staff have always been pleasant and happy - wonder how long that will last though.

Yeah, not the greatest offer and of course you are free (like myself) to not sign up. But why the vitriol? Like so many high street businesses they are seeking to keep their business operational vs pressure from Amazon and other web services so have to keep trying new inititives. Personally, I've been buying and trading stuff in with them for years and they've always been great.

If you are a lifetime gamer, you'd really miss them if they disappeared from the high street. The only national trade-in place would then be CEX.

LG OLED B6 4K TV review

Svalbaard

So you spend 3k on a 4k/HDR "gaming screen" and then have to spend half the time fucking about with a litany settings to get it "just right" rather than playing the games themselves? FFS if I was that idiotic to spend that much on a TV I'd be expecting the president of LG himself to be coming round to set it up for me.

I spent 800 on my Sony 4K/HDR for HZD alone and it looks stunning straight OOTB with only a few very minor tweaks of the standard TV and PS4 Pro settings.

I believe there was also a short lived spinoff magazine called "LM" named after the mysterious Mr Mangram. I was at the launch party for it and it was hosted by Gaz Topp who was a minor TV host at the time, and I came away with an armful of free Speccy software from Ocean.

Wow... memories :-( I feel old now. Just off back to bed to recover.

GAME is having trouble with launch day Nintendo Switch deliveries

Svalbaard

@Lankysi Slightly off topic but I just traded my old boxed PS3 slim, and my boxed PS4 in at GAME for a PS4 Pro and they gave me higher than CEX prices for both consoles. I'm not sure why people bash them so much as I've never had a problem with them.

Saying that, if people never learn that high demand always causes these issues then why not just reserve on-line and go into a store and pick it up. At least if the chain have f**ked up then you have a human to rant at rather than a Tw@ter feed or chatbot.
