Why I think big console game sales are down

Sulphur_Man

Saturation - nothing more. AAA current gen games are largely amazing value. 100s of hours of entertainment for 40-50 sovereigns. Cant think of any other entertainment medium which offers so much. But thats the downfall - all you need is one or two killer games for 6 months, and a few old favourites to dust off when needing a quick change of scene. I've got countless games sitting under 40% complete - lesson learnt. Not buying any more until that ratio improves

Could never understand why Google didnt build this tech into a typical glasses frame - probably a heavy-rimmed style to cope with the circuits and batteries - but something more discrete and less socially divisive.

Nintendo Wii U review

Sulphur_Man

@Fourwisemen @Mr.Spo

Bang on, both of you. All the big media and content owners are looking to exploit the fast-growing 'second screen' experience.

And let's not forget the original "two screen" capability - driving. An activity that 30million UK residents do at least once a week. And with the increasing technology, and touchscreens, now coming onto mainstream family cars, that skill is only going to develop further.

There's nothing 'unnatural' about the Wii U, and I'm sure future software will exploit it's potential well.

Simple question: will anyone trust their personal data on PSN ever again?

Personally, I dont think Sony can ever claim that it's secure again. Unless they dismantle it and rebuild entirely.

@sonicyoda.

That sounds like my experiences with Ninja Gaiden 2. It beat me up but I persevered as long as I could, until some progress was made, but then I said 'Enough. Where's the enjoyment gone?'

It's those cutesy games...day-glo colours...simple controls....toe-tapping music...super quick loading times.....

They look so beatable, yet disguise a real test of dexterity. Games like the arcade Donkey Kong, Super Monkey Ball (the GC original, still the best), Mario Bros 3....

Outside of that, recent kick-in-the-teethers would be Pure and Trials HD. Pure could test the patience of Budda.

UK spends £64/month on Xbox 360

Sulphur_Man

I'd say that £64, if it is indeed accurate and represetative, is driven by Zune movie rentals. It's a great service, especially if you've got the broadband speed to sustain the HD content.

Blu-rays are still too expensive imo, far better to rent HD movies for a fraction of the price.

"In fact, TDU2 requires careful control of both accelerator and brake to master its persistent understeer"

Sounds like real driving on real roads to me. 95% of all modern cars will understeer on the limit, usually fairly beningly, sometimes scarily.

Likewise, GT5's crushing monotony is getting chopped for this bright star

PlayStation Meeting: PSP2 revealed

Sulphur_Man

Hmm....let's get some perspective here

3DS out March 24, this comes out late 2011

3DS sticks with games purchased on external media, this (unless Sony says otherwise) is tethered to purchasing through PSN online store only.

3DS is broadly backwards compatible, this isnt.

Judged against the ludicrous PSPGo launch price, this will be too expensive for many.

IMO, a weaker set of launch titles than 3DS.

Apple iPhone 5 and dual-core Android smartphones will be all over the marketplace by late 2011, with tons of impressive and dirt-cheap games. Maybe not Metal Gear Solid, but hey, you can make a phonecall with your games console too!

This thing is dead in the fucking water.

@gnrlstuart and the SSX3 zen crew

Take beautiful SSX3 and stir in the online freedom of Test Drive Unlimited, and maybe some PS3 Home style community environments (only good) and something wonderful could appear...

It would be a waste of HD console power to just push out a 1080p version of Tricky. We want panoramic vistas, epic weather and atmospheric DTS-HD sound.

If some bright spark can transfer the spirit and quality of this game onto a 3G smartphone and keep the best (ie most addictive) features, then they will spend the rest of eternity sleeping on a mountain of money with many, many naked women (or men).

Seriously, someone scope this onto the ever-more powerful mini computers we carry around in our pockets these days, that also happen to be telephones.

Then we can all invest the time to play it at our convenience, instead of booting up a PC. I'll be first in the queue when they do.

PlayStation Home

Sulphur_Man

Interesting how everyone of you dunces assumes that HOME will be free.

mmm..let's see, it's obviously costing Sony a fortune and one can still play online and game without it, which we do anyway. So it's obviously going to be an OPTIONAL download. And you all think this HOME download that's cost millions to develop will be handed out free?

And don't say 'Sony says it's free, so it's free'. Sony is a serial promise-breaker and isnt going to roll this out without some immediate cash coming back. And fast.

Sony, Like MS, make a loss on the hardware, and recoup on the software. Why on heaven and earth does everyone assume HOME will be free???? Like Xbox Live is??

I reckon £19.99 a year subscription - minimum.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue

Sulphur_Man

Seriously depressing. Not the review, the game.

Forget all the guff about the effort gone into GT5 as a simulation, the car models, the polygon count, yadda yadda yadda..... and realise that GT5 has failed on the one area it needed, actually HAD, to deliver - online gameplay.

Of course it was going to be stunning to look at, it's predecessors all took their respective hardware platforms to places we didnt know existed, and GT5 seems the same. But for the online element to be described as 'stillborn' makes GT5 a total failure.
