What a game the first one was. It was such a voyage of discovery. I’ve resisted playing the next one because I wanted to wait until it was finished. That it is nearly ready is fantastic news.

What we've been playing
@sadakos_fury ironclad works best when you build up your block and use it to attack. Key cards being Barricade, Entrench and preferably more than one Body Slam card. Keep your deck small, pare down as you go by removing strikes, pick just the better block cards, and a Battle Trance is helpful. If it falls into place you’ll be laughing come act 3, and the final boss can be taken down in 4 turns.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars: remasters, emulation - or a mixture of both?
@seanlowther so what about the switch lite?

How do they handle Galaxy's very Wii specific controls on Switch? I suppose if it was shonky it might have been mentioned, so perhaps no news is good news? Guess I'll find out elsewhere.

The new Trackmania is fussy, frustrating and frequently brilliant
Boot it up for the first time and you've no idea which way to turn. The titles of things not necessarily giving much clue as what they contain. Click on a server, can't access unless you pay. Eventually, you'll find your way into a free server, and there it is - the game you remember, updated a little bit. I've loved TM in the past, bought at least two versions of it - and it remains, still, fantastic once you've waded through the clutter. I'll probably take a year's standard and see how much I play it. If any game deserves to have a subscription model, it's this - and Rocket League, but don't tell them.

Sony says it has no interest in making its PS5 games compatible with PS4
@Tatonka "It’s going to help drive future PCs" - wonderful, and like nvme a few years ago - when it does the entire back catalog of PC games from the last few decades will be able to take advantage of it.
2
9
@Tatonka You let me know how high end PC games are compromised, because we all know that if you're interested in the bleeding edge, that's where people go. Unless, of course, Sony is bringing out another Cell, in which case stop the presses.
5
8
@Tatonka Developers on PC seem capable of supporting older systems without compromising support for the latest hardware. In this case, it's one older system. Not making games compatible with the older system seems like a marketing tactic rather than one which best serves their existing customers.

Subnautica joins latest batch of Game Pass titles coming to Xbox One

Microsoft Flight Simulator is back, and it's coming to Xbox and PC
I was one of the few people disappointed when they cancelled Microsoft Flight from a few years ago - the one with Hawaii and Alaska. The graphics and weather in that game were pretty damned good, the flight model ok, a smattering of missions and progression, and all controllable with a pad. Perfect for a casual like me, but nobody really bought the DLC to make it a commercial success and so development stopped. This new game feels a bit like a spiritual successor to that - hopefully they'll get the sales this time.

Best FreeSync and 'G-Sync compatible' monitors for Nvidia graphics cards
I love gsync, I’d probably love freesync too if I’d ever witnessed it, but I ain’t. It provides a consistent, reliable experience to the point where you are largely ignorant of frame rate drops. When TVs are syncing with consoles as standard it’ll make a lot of people happy.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey down to £24.95 at Smyths
@LaNooch29 absolute nonsense - if you do any optional stuff you easily stay ahead of the main quest level. And if you do zero optional stuff, you can turn down the difficulty.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey's first big expansion is one for the fans
Assassin's Creed Odyssey physical sales down 25% on Origins
@ecco sorry mate, you’re completely up the wrong tree here. Downloads are massive contribution to sales now, 99.9% of PC sales are download only. Console downloads probably dwarf PC in total. We’re talking about millions of missing sales from these numbers.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey review - a vast and generous voyage

DF Retro: Revisiting E3 2004 - PlayStation Portable vs Nintendo DS
I loved the DS era. Advance Wars, The brilliant Zelda games. Phoenix Wright, Layton, a treasure trove of JRPGs. Tactile stylus interaction was the USP, and to this day remains a better way to play touch screen games than finger jabbing. Sadly it’s died away somewhat.

Skyrim in VR would’ve been my gaming fantasy just a few years ago. I’m sad that it’s come true and it’s probably not going to be for me. Edith Finch VR knocked me into next week with motion sickness, I’d be surprised if this isn’t the same. Any game where you move around, I’m fannied. I’d be booted out of astronaut training on the first day.

Phoenix Wright spin-off Ace Attorney Investigations is out now on iOS and Android
I'm playing the first in my 3ds currently - I've heard the second game is really worth playing and I have it waiting for me once this is done - but frankly the first is a bit of a slog to get through. I'm on the last case and having to force my way through it. Although the second is rated by many to be one of the best, I'd rate the first as the worst I've played of the DS era games.

Black Friday 2017: Steam Link discounted to $4.99 in the US at GameStop
@Bauul it doesn't just stream the image, it provides a native environment for your controllers. Also, your hdmi solution is fine for same room / next room proximity (which I also do), mine is sited a good 20m away from the source on a different floor on the other side of the house.

Revealed: Microsoft's Xbox One X benchmarks
@TagemandBagem you italicised a word my friend. You mean business. But I've still no idea what you're driving at. I use an i7 6700k and an NVMe drive. Not cheap. However console even in the ballpark of an average 1070 rig is impressive.

The comparison to a pc running a 1070 with 16Gb is eye opening - that's exactly what I m running. Console gamers aren't being short changed horsepower wise this time. No reason why this machine couldn't support Rift and / or Vive too. Seems a great value machine at, what, £500? I paid £380 just for my card 6 months ago

Valve's upcoming VR controller tracks all of your fingers
VR is so far from dead. It's miles from perfect with its expensive cumbersome headsets and wires, poor image quality and motion sickness (sometimes), but the experiences are so worth experiencing, so unique, that I consider it money and time well spent - and seemingly so do enough people that I'm sure we'll continue to get revisions of the tech over the coming years.

Super Mario Odyssey: Switch's next big technical showcase?
I've been playing through Mario Galaxy (Wii) with my son. Who gives a shit about the resolution - I'm playing at 480p I think and the game just sings presentation wise. Design, ingenuity and sheer fun. Worry about resolution in other games, not Mario.

Bethesda confirms Doom and Fallout 4 will get VR versions
The reason for warping is pretty sound, imo. I can survive indefinitely without motion sickness in Vive where the only movement is generated by myself - Bridge Crew, The Lab, Lazerbait etc. Put me in a game where I'm being moved and I'll last maybe half an hour before I need take it off. VR can be incredible, but lots of regular flat screen experiences don't necessarily translate to VR so well. I'm really excited about Fallout 4 in particular, but it does look like it's gonna be a sickener.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild on Nintendo Switch shown live for first time
but you said main console, not home console. Main console implies something else. Being the king of semantics you should know this, c'mon...

@bonito Not sure where you get your 'main console' bollocks. From your arse? I'm sure you could play your ps4 up there too. Is it easy? Let's not worry about that, as long as it's theoretically possible, then it's a yes.

@bonito you're missing the point dude. One offers portability, the other does not. You want to pack your PS4 for your week in Mallorca, go right ahead.

@mega-gazz It's not an either/or situation. You can't take your ps4 on holiday with you. You can't play it in the back of the car. I don't think Switch is really competing with PS4. They've offered a key difference which should appeal to existing console owners, or people like me who are PC only. I applaud Nintendo's approach, but it'll live or die by its content. They need to get a number of really strong titles onto it early, and port as much of the quality in their back catalog to the system as quickly as they can. They need the wind in their sails right from the start. |

Many times playing the Witcher 3 it's felt like playing an adult Zelda game, and I think the new Zelda is going to feel a little bit Witchery. I have no problem with this. Open world sword swinging adventuring, the difference being in the detail, particularly Zelda's dungeon puzzles. To my mind Zelda was already an open world game of sorts, right from the beginning there's always an open map connecting all the dungeons. Although they claim you can play however you want in this one, I'd dare say there will be a natural play order based on the abilities you unlock and needing them to access certain dungeons.

4K PC gaming is finally viable - and it's stunning
Flirting with 60 fps but not quite managing it - surely this is where g-sync (not withstanding controversy) could help smooth things out. I'd have thought g-sync would be worth a mention, since 45 - 55 fps is the sweet spot for its effectiveness.

These are the first Xbox Play Anywhere games
Microsoft's schizophrenic approach to PC gaming is a bit bizarre, but the current upswing certainly works for me. GFWL was so very bad, and all seemed lost during the height of xbox. They even completely ballsed up Flight Simulator. But now they're bringing everything to PC, and everything's rosy again save for their marketplace, which hides a premium title amongst a phalanx of utter tat and gives it a foolishly high price.

Performance Analysis: Trackmania Turbo
|
@7M7 Assuming this new game is like the PC games that came before, online everybody competes to set the best time for the track. Tracks are usually between 30 and 60 seconds long, and you have around 6 minutes to set the best time you can before moving to the next track in the playlist. You can instantly restart at any point, usually as soon as you make an error. There is no physical contact with the other cars as you say, and tbh it's usually better to disable the ghost cars to aid your own ability to set a good time. The fun, and indeed it is glorious fun, is in the competition. It's a game of finding perfect lines and perfect timing, of exhilarating tracks and outrageous skills amongst the better players. Even after 10 years playing the PC versions, I could never claim to be one of them. |

Lindsay Lohan's Grand Theft Auto lawsuit gets ugly
One or two comments suggesting she does have a point, and I have to agree. You could excuse similarities visually, but the name is suggestive of a real life alternative, just as iFruit, Cluckin' Bell and Weasel News do the same. Whether or not this should be worth any money to her is what's at hand, and if they owe her, then who else?

It sounds like Xbox One will get hardware upgrades
I'm a PC gamer and this makes complete sense to me. Given that CPU advances have slowed considerably over the last few years, a lot of PC gamers have managed to keep up to date (at 1080, less so at higher res) with a new graphics card alone, me being one of them. I'm still running the same old first gen i7 950 I bought in 2010, and the £250 upgrade to the GTX970 sees me enjoy 2016 games at nice smooth framerates. People say 'just buy a PC then', and I understand that - I'm a PC gamer through and through, but I understand the appeal of a simplified user experience focused on gaming. They could even go so far to design the upgrade cards to behave much like old console cartridges, slot it in and you're away.

Performance Analysis: Hitman beta on PC
I use a 970 with an i7, and for the handful of games I buy each year the story is all too familiar: Performance a bit choppy on maxed out settings for the first few weeks, then a patch or two later and it's all buttery smooth. Last year it was GTAV, Witcher 3, Just Cause 3 - lovely and smooth now, not so much on release.

@Ep1cN3ss1e it's ok to prefer using PS4 over PC, but the reasons you give mark you out somewhat. Hunched? Nah.. Plugging in a HDMI cable? Yeah, a serious ballache. Fucking about trying to game in Linux using Wine? Oh if only there were a better way?
