Civ 5 designer returns with a fresh approach to 4X

StarkOrange

While there is a lot to like about Civ 4 I think the Brave New World expansion made the fifth game good enough. I just can't go back to the infinite unit stacking after playing Civ 5: combat is infinitely more strategic and fun now. Also, Steam Workshop support is a nice thing to have.

EDIT:

@TheKillerCarrot, you realize that every major installment in the Civ series have had two expansions? This is nothing new.

Total War: Rome 2 review

StarkOrange

Pretty much what I expected: Good gameplan littered with bugs and small inconveniences. Empire: Total War was like this as well (though I doubt this game will be worse. Empire was brutal when it came out).

I expect patching and the additional mod support will greatly improve this game in the future, which I why I bought it. Normally this isn't a buisness practice I support but I can't help myself with this franchise.

Trust me: when the new generation comes out you will see a MASSIVE difference.

BioWare: Mass Effect 4 due "late 2014 to mid-2015"

No matter what I may feel about the choices, the ME3 ending and so on, there is one thing I will always remember from the ME series:

The suicide mission was, despite the Terminator, the most epic mission ever to exist in a video game. The whole buildup, the superb soundtrack, the cutscenes... it was bloody perfect.

Just gonna leave this here:

Microsoft denied Killer Instinct trademark because of little-known 7 year old TV show

StarkOrange

@null I obviously mentioned it as a mirror perspective. If games can do this to TV shows, it can work the other way too.

Any of you claming this isn't the right thing to do by the copywright office have no clue what you're talking about. In this case it might be a bad thing, but when it comes to matters of the law, you must always look at the big picture. If Microsoft gets this, the floodgates will open for similar cases.

How does it matter if the show was small or not? Do you have any idea how many games are considered small?

Imagine a small game. This game isn't wildly recieved, because it's complicated, perhaps a bit oldschool and goes against a few trends. It never gets a successor, but it always have a loyal fanbase since it's so unique. Perhaps it's a new, but oldschool RPG for example.

Now imagine that a movie/TV show gets launched with the same name. The copywright means nothing, because "the game was so small, and there only was one, never a series." Is this ok? No? But that's EXACTLY what you just, indirectly, approved.

Again, if Microsoft gets this, it sends the signal that copywright only means something if it's a good money making thing. I bet that will encourage smaller companies, in any field, to get started, RIGHT?

The score doesn't work like that. A 10 doesn't mean it's perfect, just that they recommend it for everyone. You should read on their score system.

Steam Autumn Sale is now live

@stephenc87 Yes. While the Christmas sale is usually bigger, it's not necessarily cheaper. The flash sales now are about as good of an offer you will get on Steam... which is damn fine indeed.

Blizzard swoops on Heroes of Warcraft domain

StarkOrange

@Laythe_AD You don't think they've tried?

It seems likely that the owner of the website wants way more then it's worth since Blizzard can pay. You don't think they would have chosen this path unless they thought it much cheaper?

Jesus Christ people. I know it's popular to hate on Blizzard since Diablo III but it's getting ridiculous.

Mass Effect 4 will use DICE's Battlefield 3 engine

StarkOrange

Well... I don't have anything against a Mass Effect game with the Frostbite engine really.

Even with the bad ME3 ending, the series as a whole was brilliant.

I'm catiously optimistic about the future Mass Effect games. Not pre-order material for me, but I am curious to see what they make of it.

Back to Omega: Aria and Nyreen, Mass Effect's first female turian, star in 4 hour DLC

So many people flame Bioware for the "on disc DLC."

No one blinks at the fact that there are "future DLC maps" that are included in the limited edition of Halo 4 and not the regular copy.

Obsidian's Project Eternity most funded video game ever on Kickstarter

StarkOrange

I think KotOR 1 was better than the second. I do believe however, that the sequel would have been 10 times better than the first one if Obsidian had more time to work on it (aka Darth Atris ending and less buggy). The restoration mods was fantastic, but so many parts of the game still hints at more content that they originally had planned, which make me a sad panda.

Also Kreia is my favourite NPC in any game, ever.

This is how big League of Legends is

StarkOrange

It's incredible how big this game is compared to it's poor quality.

The hero, I mean "Champion" introduction system (aka release a super overpowered character to sell it, then nerf it after release), the "anti fun" skill mechanic and so on... it's ridiculous.

I wouldn't hate it so much if people didn't claim it was an Esport when it's really just a much less complicated version of DotA.

Splinter Cell: Echoes comic covers the gap between Conviction and Blacklist

StarkOrange

@Archronos I can tell you that after Activision and EA, Ubisoft is probably my least favourite company :) And like I NEVER said anything about the direction of the franchise, did I? I specifically said I don't know anything about it.

That does not blind me for when they actually have legit reasons for something. To me, saying that a 62 year old wasn't able to give the right motion capture... just how is this not a good reason? Please explain how this is just going for "mass sales" and being dishonest about it?

StarkOrange

@brider Yes, it appears I was wrong. Apparently they didn't give him the job because a 62 year old male wasn't agile enough for the motion capture they wanted to do. How is this not a good reason?

I haven't played a Splinter Cell game since Pandora Tomorrow so I don't know which direction they are taking. If it has turned into "just another CoD", that is obviously a valid complaint. However, hating on the changed VA is not.

It's like complaining there are no more action movies starring Clint Eastwood. I personally love Michael Ironside's acting for Fisher, but age takes it's toll.

StarkOrange

@LR100 Complain about the gameplay/setting if you like, but complaining about the voice actor is just silly. Sometimes you can't get the actors you want; does that mean you cancel the franchise?

It's just like people complained about Anders VA in Dragon Age 2. Bioware had actually attempted to get the original one from Awakening, but he just didn't want to. So what are they supposed to do?

Starcraft 2's new multiplayer beta blows HotS and cold

StarkOrange

Swarm hosts are so overrated; I don't know if there is a signle unit that is as vulnerable to counter attacks. It makes the Siege tank look mobile. Keep up the pressure through the game and it is very rarely a problem.

Now the Viper on the other hand...

Torchlight 2 review

StarkOrange

I would get this; I thought I would when I was disappointed with Diablo III.

But I honestly feel like the latest patch Blizzard released has addressed almost every single concern I had with the game.

Probably will get a lot of downvotes for this, but credit where it's due: No developer can patch and improve a game after release like Blizzard.

Question is not whether I want this or not.

Question is where the **** do I pre order!?

EDIT: Also:

"She [Jeri Ellsworth] gets verbose when asked about corporate culture at Valve, about how she's never worked at a company where risk and failure are so acceptable -- even encouraged."

Seriously, this is why I love Valve: Quality always comes first, even if you hit a few bumps on the road. How I wish I could work there... I'd work as a janitor, just let me be there!
