The new Ataribox console priced and dated

SirScratchalot

With specs I might buy one as a mac-mini replacement. Heck, with a good price and not locked down I might buy them as starter computers for the kids, but I'd want to be able to set it up to my hearts content.

Mario + Rabbids is Switch's unlikeliest tech showcase

SirScratchalot

Played this at a friends house this Saturday, I commented on how NICE it looked several times. It really impressed me.
I expected to find the gameplay shallow but instead I got completely suckered in and played non-stop through world 1.

Shocked at how well this turned out, seemed like such a bad concept. But I'm happy about being wrong of course.

Steam users review-bomb Sonic Mania over unexpected DRM

SirScratchalot

@SuperSoupy There's no steam-DRM requirement. Plenty of games on steam allow you to simple double click the executable in the game dir.
Technically Steam as a store does not mandate DRM.

BioShock's fascinating but inescapable failure

SirScratchalot

@Rogueywon
I disagree here. Think of Andrew Ryan as a John Galt that got what he wanted, an objectivist society. Yet once achieved social cohesion becomes a problem, those who failed in rapture were scooped up by Fontaine who used them as a powerbase to challenge Andrew Ryan, who then turned to repression and automated defences to keep his dream from falling apart. Shades of this are in Atalas shrugged where the government factories who make Rearden metal are hit by artillery. In Atlas Shrugged everyone who is not in the Galt camp is an ineffective idiot, which makes the whole narrative a straw man. In Bioshock Fontaine is competent and controlling the poor provides a power base which in turn radicalises Andrew Ryan away from his ideals toward government repression. That's as far as I can see the whole point, objectivism requires everyone to play along and be perfectly dedicated or it will end up with the exploitable underclass. In ways this highlights why we have such things as social wellfare and public education, which was entirely glossed over in Ayn Rands works.

I always had a problem with Atlas Shruggeds last scene where Galt, Rearden etc sit in a room deciding who will run the rails, the factories etc of this new governmnet, like any old bunch of cronies. This seems to me like a pretty good setup for such an outcome.

What would you uninvent about modern games?

SirScratchalot

Voice acting. No more please, I can read, I'm on the internet all day.
Imagine the branching ending Mass Effect 3 could have had it not needed actual people to say all of it, if the writers could easily play with narrative, add lore - anything!.

My favorite part of ME games was always the encyclopedia.

Very happy to read this. I love 2012 Xcom, really or I wouldn't have consumed it as ravenously as I did but it's not nearly as deep as the original UFO. Nor as the open source UFO:Alien Invasion, or Xenonauts with it's squadrons of formation flying fighters and multiple bases.

It feels almost like a corridor shooter XCom on a timer, panic will always rise no matter what I do, I always only have one dropship, I can't use low level ecruits in greater numbers as my tech increases, I've seen pretty much all the maps in a playthrough....

So maybe it's just not the game I want. Maybe I'm haunted by having played a few spiritual successors to Xcom before. If 2012 XCom was a dish I'd eat all there is of this, but it's not quite as filling as I wish it would be.

I'm just to chickenshit to actually log in to my account and seing if I get banned or not. At leastthe gear of my character should be pretty good evidence that I've not been hacking. :)
Honestly, I'd prefer Lan play and off-line to this battle.net malarkey regardless of bannings or not. Diablo II had this stuff figured out, just let me check a box that says offline only on character creation, store a file of my char locally, ta-da!

I haven't touched a multiplayer mode except SC2 with friends for years, some co-op here and there sure, but nothing else. That's REALLY what bugs me with f2p, it's great that you have a dev budget and so on but I'm not interested in multiplayer gaming and a premium F2P singleplayer game is unlikely to materialize for a long while.
