Nintendo: "no plans" to launch any other model than Switch OLED

Sharz

@Elba They have tried to compete in the past and it was 'ok' but then they hit gold with the Wii and realised they didn't need to. The Gamecube was plenty power enough compared to the PS2 but wasn't a success, the WiiU was alright compared to 360 and did even worse.

So why bother when you can do your own thing like the Switch?

Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance review - a bad first impression but it's a grower

Sharz

@ziggy_played_guitar

Wouldn't compare this to outriders. While true both had bugs and rough patches the game underneath outriders is fundamentally good. Even if you removed the bugs from dark alliance it would still be a frustrating and dull game as most of the problems are design/budget choices. Such as the animations or the different effects are just colour swaps.

Microsoft will slash its own store cut on PC game sales

Sharz

One of the biggest problems is the store wants to control your hard drive. Unable to edit files, mods etc is a big negative. Particularly when you want fix a problem or dare I say improve something.

Basically the difference between console and pc does not exist with the windows store. But other than that how could you not welcome this.

Sharz

Didn't know something could scream Japanese so much. But hey looks wonderful and colourful.

Just hope the controls are perfect. Find sometimes with these games something gets missed, like a oddly mis timed jump or animation. If they get the fundamentals right then will be there purely for the colour.

Those are pretty high specs, but not sure why. The game looks ok i guess and at high fps would require something decent ish. But the game is hardly blowing tthe door off. Alyx looks better and you sure as anything dont need the same specs.
My 5700XT can run everything (2070 level?) and i am not about to change it for one game.

Either way not sure if i would buy it, looks decidly generic but hey i grew up with the WWII games being every where. Maybe just havent recovered yet.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla - what PC hardware is needed to match PS5 visuals?

Sharz

Always found assassins creeds to run terribly on PC compared to similar games released at the same time. I remember Brotherhood, Syndicate and Origins all being a struggle for my PC at the time while it was pretty powerful and play everything else at max settings. Even now my 5700XT could run Origins "better", no idea why assassins creeds are always like this but they are.

Will be intreasted in what happens when we get more games to compare to.

Torchlight 3 arrives next month for PC, PS4, Xbox One

Sharz

When this entered early access earlier this year the reviews were terrible, but many understood it was very early. So held off (as most people should) but going by the more recent September reviews it is still not great. Most steam reviews can be summed up as, its to shallow and to much like a mobile game.

So maybe wait for a sale instead of 'launch' version?

Existing Kingdoms of Amalur owners on Steam get next week's remaster at half-price

Sharz

Sneaky that they are making it sound like an offer when the vast majority of existing owners will have it on Origin. As this was orginally released at the time when EA were pushing Origin hard, so all keys were origin keys and didnt even show up on Steam initially.

Alhtough iam not surprised and not complaining after all new THQ were not involved at all with the original.

Sony says expect more of its first-party PlayStation games on PC

Sharz

@alexatkin
They could get around NVME size easily enough on PC. If the PC does not have enough storage they could use a combination of RAM and SSD. By the time this is an issue PCs might have 32GB as standard, even now could easily do a combination of NVME, SSD & RAM. Should give plenty of options if they are willing to bring to PC..

Levelling in World of Warcraft is about to undergo its biggest change in a decade - maybe ever

Sharz

@Killerbee I think the issue with MMO sequels is you dont so much 'play' them but rather 'live' in them. After spending hundreds or thousands of hours making friends and being part of the world it is a big ask to start all over again. It is the exact reason why WoW is still going strong today because plenty of people are invested in the world.

If a sequel is to much like the original then no point in it, so why leave? And equally if the game is different enough to leave then why be a sequel in the first place? Thats how Guild Wars 2 managed it, it is a new game with very limited ties to the first game.

Sharz

The real feeling I get with WoW is it is old. Yes they can dress it up with new mechanics and new graphics but the game is creaking under it's own weight at so many points. As pointed out you could be doing artifact weapon quests while also having garrison quests, whilst having to think about the BFA war story.

To make it manageable you have to ignore most of the game and only focus on one (newer) element. Which makes other bits feel redundant. And you feel like you are missing out. That is why I now only play FF14, as the Heavensward dungeons from a couple of years ago are just as relevant now as they were then. Or how doing the Stormblood story line feeds into the narrative of the overall world today.

Torchlight 3's a bit of a mess but I have faith

Sharz

Hearing so much about Torchlight 3 has made me reinstall 2, and by god its good to be back. Never did finish my New Game+ so thats where i will be and looking forward to trying 3 out when it is a bit further along development.

The way i think about early access games is, does this game stand up as it is right now, would it be able to get away being a final release? A good example of that is Dead Cells it felt pretty complete months before it was actually released so was ok to buy in early access. Or more recently Hades which is excellent despite still techincally being in early access. But some games (to many to name) are wrongly using early access to get some extra funding in the hopes of one day finishing there game, and frankly that is not out our job as consumers.

Really enjoyed both 1 & 2, to my view Torchlight 2 was pretty much perfect for the type of game it wanted to be. Will be intriguing to see how these changes work out.

Do also have concern that the F2P 'wiring' although ripped out would have influnced elements of the design. But that is very much a wait and see.

Marvel at ten new minutes of atmospheric Half-Life: Alyx gameplay action

Sharz

@curtlikesmeat

Yes the Oculus Quest can do that as it has inside- out tracking and requires no PC. However it wouldnt have the power to run this particular game. The Rift S doesnt require any sensors either and you have freedom to wander, but would be restristed by the tether to the PC. The Valve headsets use 'lighthouse' beacons so you could potentially scatter them around a warehouse but again restricted by length of cables.

Not only is it a pain to put on and get comfy with glasses but after a while the glasses move or fog up. But their isn't really any perfect soultion for any of that other than design a headset for specatale users from the ground up.

Baldur's Gate and Planescape Torment on console: let a legend lie

Sharz

KOTOR is another one, yes that also had a console release with the orginal xbox but I played it on PC back then. Downloaded that to play on my Shield (with controller) and also to give the tablet a go.

It works well enough, especially the touch screen controls which do a fair job but the game has aged. It is clunky and fiddly compared to Mass Effect which is obviously its successor.in particular the multiple screens you need to jump around when changing skills/items. So yes great game but certainly of a particular period in PC RPGs.

Epic Store's Tetris Effect and SteamVR [UPDATED]

@Mister_Vimes I dont have steamVR installed, no real reason just havent needed it. I tend to buy games on Oculus store and the ones i have on steam work fine with the Oculus SDK/API anyway.
1 0

Sharz

@scottadamson I think it is using the Oculus API in some way anyway. As i am using it with an Oculus and it is correctly hooking in all the normal oculus stuff like menus. Also in the Epic store you can choose to launch in one of 3 modes, desktop, steam or oculus. Why three if it is all using steamVR? Never mind i havent even installed steam vr.

My experience with my oculus rift has been that if it isn't on the oculus store it can be a bit annoying to use. Basically what I am saying is I wish this wasn't exclusive to epic store.

Is the game exclusive to VR? Makes the above point pretty relevant to me. But intrigued to buy it.

World of Warcraft Classic players think some features are bugs

Sharz

Back in the day I didn't really use add ons, I think xperl and bartender were the only ones I accepted. I even remember hating when people installed quest tracking mods as at the time I felt it robbed the experience of exploring the world. So didn't want people to 'help me' by knowing exactly where everything was. Of course now I realise how useful it is, but still robbed the experience of something.

Looking forward to totally vanilla, but no idea for how long I will hang around.

Sharz

Didn't find performance to much of a problem with a GTX 1080 at 1440p and with freesync. However I was disappointed in the gameplay, no point looking pretty if it doesn't feel great.

Has all the flaws of Destiny and Warframe but without the positives. I would happily trade some graphics effects for a better feel. Case in point the second story mission. Loads of enemies, massive bullet sponge boss and weak guns not to mention the visual language is such that you can't see what is going on.

Destiny 2 director "not disappointed" with Forsaken sales

Sharz

I am loving Forsaken having waited for the legendary collection (learnt my lesson after D1 taken king price nonsense). However as much as iam loving the amount and variety of the content if D3 is a total wipe I will not be buying it.

If you want to create a fully online shared world game (mmo) then you expand and grow it. You do not reset everything every couple of years, otherwise no point investing in the character. With D1 they had the wrong tools, engine and under estimated the work involved, so I kind of accept that D2 had to be a reset. But that excuse will not work again.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider review - latest reboot makes small strides but remains a shadow of the originals

Sharz

A few previews have picked up on the fact it is always 'this is what makes Lara into the tomb raider' and never actually moving the character forward. When will she be the tomb raider rather than just an angry young woman?

Looks like the full review says the same and to be honest as much as I enjoyed the first two games I don't need more of them. You simply can't keep rehashing the same basic point without new material.

Talking so much about ray tracing and not alot about actual game performance makes me think this is the one trick poney cards. A bit like when tesslation was first introduced they kept banging on about it but no card could really do it justice, and the cards themselves were very hot and used loads of power relative to actual real world performance.

Very glad i bought my GTX1080 for £325 last week. Now that these new cards have been unvielded at such a high price i dont think the Pascal generation will drop all that fast. If you see a good price you can now pick it up without worry.

Personally i have found myself using GOG alot more over the last couple of years. Something about how Steam lacks any form of leadership or identify just means i feel no loyalty.

Dont get me wrong i'm not saying other store fronts are perfect, it is just that Steam doesnt really have any identity anymore. GOG has the DRMfree stick, uplay and origin are pretty polished now so even they are attractive when looking at the respective publisher stores. And now even Battle.net has more social features beyond just a place to sell games.
