The new game by LawBreakers studio Boss Key is a 1980s battle royale

Sgt_Petter

@MadJack1812 If they did that I might actually have been interested. I actually really liked Lawbreakers as it had a fantastic movement system. This looks like a generic shooter in comparison, and there's nothing left of Lawbreakers in the gameplay.

Destiny - Vault of Glass walkthrough and guide

Sgt_Petter

I've been playing since launch, but sporadically and never got around to play the raid until today when I got a random fireteam invite in the tower. We started at a save point by the gatekeeper (a little sad, but I don't think I would have had time for the whole thing anyway). We struggled for a while to get to grips with exactly what was going on, but reading this guide helped a lot, so thanks for making it. :)

Telltale Humble Bundle lasts for this week only

Sgt_Petter

I've already bought most of theses bundles, and I realize that I'll never play a lot of the games in the bundles. Still, I love what they're doing and the whole idea of trusting the gamers themself in this way through DRM-free and pay what you want games. So I usually end up paying more than I think the games are worth (to me personally), just to support the cause and show my appreciation.

Saturday Soapbox: IP Freely?

Sgt_Petter

@CamberGreber These ideas may very well have been there without any studio to make a reality out of it. And I think that the main problem is not that the companies take the ideas as their own, but that they at the same time deny that this is the intellectual property of the people who created the idea. So this is rather about being entitled to the idea, who they themselves made in the first place.

Radeon HD 7790 review

Sgt_Petter

@showler While more powerful components is nice, and even if the 7950 was a realistc choice in terms of price, there is also the problem of cooling. The 7950 has a TDP more than twice as high as the 7790. And getting good and quiet cooling in such a small case is difficult.

Frozen Synapse on iPad in May, Android version "shortly after"

Sgt_Petter

@fletch273 I don't think it should. It's pretty much the only game I feel I can play on my old laptop. It also has a simple 2D layout with little movement. I haven't actually played anything on any kind of iPad, but I don't think this should be too heavy.

Halo 4 spoilers reveal main antagonist, among other things

Sgt_Petter

@bumyoghurt I've played all the Halo games (sans Halo Wars) and have counted many hours online in Halo 2, 3 and Reach. I still don't care too much about the story. It does have a special atmosphere, but it's mostly just a great game in terms of gameplay. I have yet to play a game with better gunplay online. It's amazingly balanced considering the diversity of guns that is sadly lacking in most other shooters.

Surround Sound Headset Face-Off

Sgt_Petter

@Gunship Of course you don't get comparable sound quality to headphones of the same price range, but these have many other features , which makes them a viable option for gamers. There's no microphone attached to my Audio-Technica ATH-M50 or AKG K242 phones, and while I've used some homemade constructions in the past, the ease of use means I prefer my Turtle Beach X41 before the others.

The sound quality is worse than both (using "bass boost" makes it a lot worse, giving a more muffled sound), still, being able to chat while I play online games is essential, which makes these more than just snake oil. (It should be obvious that it's more expensive to build a headphone that also has a microphone, wireless transmitter/receiver, runs on battery, buttons with volume control etc and a dock with a wireless transmitter/receiver, various input/output options, DAC with surround simulation etc)

Board Games Are Back

Sgt_Petter

Sure there are a lot other board games that requires more typical "gaming skills" than Scrabble, Ludo and Trivial Pursuit. Still, throwing those in together is impossible. Calling them "only tests of your patience, exercises in repetition." is just plain wrong. For Ludo, yes, I agree. However, Scrabble is more a test of vocabulary, just as TP is a test of knowledge.

I'm fully aware that these games don't have the same similarities to video games as the other games in the article. I still love a game of Scrabble and a game of TP (or similar game) with a decent group of friends can be a lot of fun. These are indeed games even though you might not like them.

The Story of DOTA

Sgt_Petter

Valve are great at two things: making games and doing business. I don't think any other game developer has as much financial statistical data as Valve does, through both Steam and TF2's in-game store they've found out what players are willing to spend money on, and on that basis they decided to go F2P with TF2. I don't doubt that this was the right decision, financially speaking. If that is true, and Valve know that they're a making a game in a long line of other DotA games, where most, and all successful entries have been free, including the original (given that you already own WC3). They know that the community they're targeting is very hardcore, and have been used to playing their games for free. Another thing to mention is that this is a hard game to sell to new players, as they will probably know about the steep learning curve and harsh community, and therefore will be more cautious of the game, even if they're otherwise interested in the concept.

Given all these factors, I would be surprised if Valve did not go F2P with this game. It's about time we got a new hat simulator anyway.

@Subdominator "As a brawler games like Trine show how it should be done."
I thought Trine was great, but IMO, the combat was easily the worst part of that game. I loved the platforming, but the combat felt like a chore. Stand here, shoot at enemies, wait for enemies to respawn, rinse and repeat. Maybe it had been better, if the arrows hadn't been so overpowered. I never used the Knight unless my Thief fell into a pit of lava or something.

Mass Effect 3: exclusive Origin version

Sgt_Petter

70-page art book, that sounds nice, ohh, it's DIGITAL. Yay, a PDF... or probably something else, something they can slap some DRM on. I'm sure Peter Molyneux would need the digital dog, but for me this looks like wasted money. It's not that I'm against collector's editions, this could've been a GREAT collector's edition, if only it had a box. With a physical art book and comic, and commemorative artwork possibly (what is that anyway? A digital statue of Shepard?). Also the lithographic and a real N7 hoodie, not just some in-game clothing.

"We've all gotten used to a degree of parity in the download world, whether we're talking about games on...Steam..." Talk for yourself, they may know the proper conversion rates for pounds, but they certainly don't for Euros. For a LOT of games, they think =$, which means they charge us +40 %. At least on PC, we're not quite yet seeing universal prices and availability in the downloadable market.

@StooMonster There is a theory going around on the Steam forums about Chell being Cave J's daughter. "The only thing missing from the PC game that is found in the console releases is the split-screen co-op mode."

That's wrong, there has already been found a way to play the game split-screen on the PC, where one plays with mouse and keyboard, while the other uses a controller, like the 360 controller. It requires adjustment of one file and some typing in console, the instructions are found in the Steam forums.
