Sony and MS are both right, says analyst

Fart,

I prefer the 360 too, but you really should accept that other people prefer the PS3. it simply meets their needs better and it is not matter of being quantifiabley better or worse.

I cant justify the cost of owning two consoles, but shit, I wish I could play Wipeout HD, LBP, Killzone 2. The PS3 is building quite a nice little library of exclusives.

Over 8m Wiis sold in Europe last year

Rodney

I just hope the Wii changes the focus away from 3D blockbusters.

I love the GTA's and COD's of the gaming world, but I think developers need to diversify a bit. few of the big blockbuster games sell well enough to make enough money which makes publishers very conservative in regards to innovation and trying something new.

I want more 2D games!

I like cutting edge graphics, but I would be happy to pay less for more medium budget titles that try interesting ideas.

PS2 was most-played console of 2008

Rodney

I dont know, maybe current gen stuff has not really delivered anything knew, but couldnt the same arguement be levelled against last gen and the gen before that? couldnt the PSone conceivable made a GTAIII with a smaller draw distance, lower frame rate, lower textures, maybe even just wire frames. possibley, but it wouldnt have been the same experience.

360/PS3 just do everything better and once you become accustomed to that level of presentation it is difficult to go back.frame rates, draw distances and resolution do effect gameplay

Having said that, the price for new 360 games in Australia is rediculous, so recently I have been playing a lot of xbox originals. Some still hold up really well, others do not.

Just went through Halo2 again recently and it looked awesome.

Rallisport Challenge and Crimson skies, although starting to look a little dated, are still tremendous fun to play.

Street Fighter IV

its funny, I never played street fighter when I was a lad. I remember, as an 9 year old, arguing with my school mates
that Mortal Kombat II was the more realistic fighting game....Im not quite sure how I reasoned Mortal Kombat II was realistic but there you go.

Its seems the Street Fighter series has aged a lot better. maybe I should put my 15 year long MK fanboyism aside and give this one a go.

It is funny seeing people get upset because their precious favourite games are in the wrong place on an arbitrary list.

Just because something places higher or lower than something else on this list, doesnt mean its better or worse. Do you really think the worth of something as subjective as a game can be quantified so precisely that its exact position on a list of the years top 50 can be determined?

get over it, its just a bit of fun and its not your list any way, its Eurogamers list, so they cant exactly be wrong about their own favourites can they?

I think as a nice little round up of some the years best titles its an excellent read. Its got me interested in a couple of games I had not even heard of before now.

Skate 2 coming in January

Rodney

I loved skate. Brilliant game, but lots of potential for improvement which makes me very optimisitic about Skate 2.

strangely challenging for an EA game. I got up to the Big Rob Pro Skate challenge and gave up. Now, do I trade it in, while it still has some trade in value and keep the credit note for Skate 2, or do I go back to it and complete it?

I am loathe to get rid of a game before completing it....

Nickelback singer slams Guitar Hero

GhenghisNaan, SpyroViper

I am a bit of a music snob myself, one thing I would say is, I listen to different music for different reasons.

I listen to Radiohead, Massive Attach, Elbow and bands like this when I am in a introsprective mood, or I want to sit down and really listen to the music

I listen to pop/rock bands such as Red Hot Chillis/Cold War Kids etc for the catchy melodies

I listen to disturbed, deftones, slayer etc for the visceral energy of the music. If I have a lot of pent up energy, this music is good for releasing it. good to lift weight to as well.

I listen to instrumental hip hop and funk to nod my head along to as background music to something else I am doing.

my point is, some bands move you, some bands uplift you, and some bands make you want to destroy things. criticisng slayer for having no melody is as pointless as saying Radiohead dont get you dancing.

oh yeah and Nickleback shit!

I reckon your average Halo fanboy would donate a few non-essential organs to play a new Halo game a week early.

I feel bad for the LBP developers. the culmination of all their hard work focused on getting the product ready on time only for the release date to be put back two weeks. must be frustrating for them.

I wonder if the copies of the offending version floating around will someday be worth something to antique game collectors...

You have been debating whether or not Koran condones/incites violence and intolerance. This is somewhat missing the point, the majority of the rules of Islam come from the Hadiths, not the Koran. The Koran is the alleged word of God as dictated by Mohammad to his scribes and the Hadiths are based on the biographies of Mohammad written by his contemporaries. Many Muslims hold the Hadiths in as high regard as the actual Koran and regard them as the word of God. The Hadiths is where Sharia law is derived and one will find plent of intolerance and hate within them, regardless of context. 'whoever changes religion-kill him'

Also, the Surahs withinin Koran, by Mohammads own admission, contridict each other. Some are all about tolerance 'there is no compulsion in Islam' but others are about as intolerant as you can get . To pick and chose the Surahs or to give legitimacy to one interperatation over another just because it happens to fit in with your liberal world view makes the whole thing completely arbitrary. By doing this you are also giving validity to the fundamentalist interperations because they are as equally supported by scripture as your own.

The only way to reconcile Islam and tolerance is by ommitting the intolerant parts of Islam or jumping through all sorts of apologetic hoops.

Im not sure if this thread is still going....

Nobody has the right not to be offended, because such a right is not be workable in a free society.'Offense' is too subjective for individuals or groups to be protected against. After all, some extreme atheists may be offended by 'Songs of Praise' but it would not be reasonable to ban the show to protect atheists from possible offense.

However, just because we have the right to offend, does not mean that we should go out of our way to offend just on principle. In a pluralist society we should seek not to offend other people, so long as they and their beliefs are benign, if only out of good manners and for social cohesion

I dont believe in capitulating or cow-towing to religious fundamentalist types. The only Muslims who would find LBP offensive and call for a recall are the same ones we should be marginalising in society. We should not be encouraging or empowering them by giving into their unreasonable demands. Before I am called a 'militant atheist' I would use exactly the same arguement and logic against the hypothetical banning of Songs of Praise to appease atheists.

However in this case, I believe Sony made the right decision to pull the song from LBP (although a patch might have been a better way to do it) Not because some minority groups moght be offended but because the content of the song was not at all appropriate for this type of family orientated game. it was completely at odds with the whole style and presentation of the game. Religion, either pro or con, has no place in a game such as LBP.

LA has such a strong back catlogue of strong IP's I just wish they knew what to do with them.

I really miss the LA star wars games from the 90's. it may just be nostalga on my part, but the art style of the original trilogy star wars universe was just so much better.

FreeStyleGames working on DJ Hero?

Rodney

this could be interesting.

Im a bit of a turmtablist scratch nerd and I have always thought turntablism/scratching would work very well as a game. particularly the amnidextrous/rythem nature of it. some of the Qbert do it yourself DVD's are set up very similarly to games.

infact, if the peripheral turntable mimicks the analogue of vinyl, and the software then manipulates the audio in realtime, similar to final scratch and serato, then this could be as good as a QFO turntable for scratching.

if this goes down the scratching route, rather than the beat matching route then this could be a lot of fun and teach people how to scratch. If it is just another rythem again in new clothes then it will be a missed oppurtunity.

Most criticism of religion in Spore is from "militant atheists", claims Wright

Rodney

John_the_Fisherman

I kind of agree, the whole 'atheism is just another religion' equivlancy arguement is a little disingenuous because atheism is no more a religion than not playing golf is a sport.

However, some atheists are so anti-theistic they are just as dogmatic and intolerant as the religous funamentalism they rail against.
0 0

Rodney

I dont know, this term 'militant atheist' reminds me of that line in Austin Powers when Dr Evil introduces Frough howbrisner (spelling?) as the 'leader of the militant wing of the Salvation Army'.

I am not denying that that is a certain brand of atheism that somehow turns the lack of a belief into a positive belief set and who are as evangelical in their beliefs as those they argue against. I just think 'militant' is a crap description for them because they do absolutely nothing that resembles militancy. They are the philisophical equivlant of Six Form politics

Atheists who are complaining about this game are idiots and if certain members of the religious community were offended by this game as well, they would be idiots too. What annoys me though is that although religious complaints could be just as spurious, they would be given a lot more credence.

That just irks the secularist in me.

I probably could have worded it better. I just posting at work when I have a moment.

My point was, a game scenario that even resembled the holocaust (even if the Jews were all zombies) would be considered in bad taste.

I suppose I should let it go and talk about the game. I really enjoyed RE4 (never played 2 or 3) but I wouldnt mind a little more of the survival horror I remember from RE all those years ago. without the stilited dialogue and door opening loading screens of course.

My point was, this game isnt racist but looks very much like what a racist game might look like, and that is even to someone who is familiar with the storyline. The resemblence is just perhaps a little too close to a sensitive subject. I will try and be more concise next time.

too often gamers dont seem to be very tolerant of what they see as outside criticism of their precious hobby. Most times outside criticism is based on ignorance, but occasionally they have a point.

I think a distinction needs to be made bewtween Islam and Islamism.

The Islamist threat to Europe is mainly a demographic one, not a terrorist one. The media's Muslim bashing is allowing the minority Islamists to represent the majority of Muslims. This is framing the issue within a clash of civilisations type Muslim vs Non Muslim paradigm, thus turning moderates to rally behind the Islamists. Whereas in reality the problem is a Muslim vs Islamist issue and should be treated as suich rather than villifying all muslims as if they were one homogenous group.

Thats my analysis of the situation any way. I think I just realised I was on the wrong forum. I should be on the Guardian Comment is Free.
