Legendary cover artist Bob Wakelin passes away

RPTGB

@kangarootoo
"Athena" was Lisa Lyon, one of the pioneers of female body building, google her name (make sure no impressionable types are nearby, lots of nsfw pics) and the photo ref Bob used for that cover will soon pop up. Doesn't take anything away from the great man's work though.

Damn right, that cover wouldn't look out of place next to the best of Neal Adams' Batman work. Fantastic stuff, what a talent Bob was. He is on record as saying that he was no fan of having to deal with the "cutesier" jobs but he made jumping from style to style look easy. A real art hero.

Tomb Raider was also the first game level designer Neal Boyd ever worked on. He remembers Toby Gard giving him an early demo.
I think Neal probably doesn't remember (or chooses not to) that he also worked on a game called "Guts N Garters", published by Ocean way back when, before he decided to return back Derby way and bigger and better things. He sat right behind me :)

Superb bang for buck, the sound and build quality on the E10's is fantastic for "cheap" headphones.

Naughty Dog are an incredibly talented outfit also backed up by the luxury of long dev cycles and deep pockets. A lot of the tech they use isn't anything groundbreaking BUT they are very clever in the way they use that tech.

In my opinion ND's secret weapon is this artist, Yibing Jiang. Her works speaks for itself.

Woaaah boy.....just to make sure my reading comprehension hasn't totally gone south....we are still talking about a company that makes video games right? This isn't Exxon or the Guinness affair, this is about a bunch of people who had to make some very shiny pretties in their video game a bit less shiny (but still very pretty). We're talking about that company, right?

@SpaceMonkey77 Yep, I've been a character artist in the games biz for a looong time so I can appreciate all this stuff. Sometimes compromiseshave to be made (especially when Marketing get their filthy hands on something) but making changes to games, or more specifically, artistic changes to games, by committee is never a healthy option.

@FladgeMangle "This is a 3D model made by men who obviously should have had a wank before they came to work."

Hang on, I thought it was the artists who were supposed to be the mindless juveniles? Look, at the end of the day, who a character looks in a game is down to the art director, concept artists and head of project. If they want a male or female character to show a bit of flesh, then that's their damned right as creators. Wrong or right, it's their choice and theirs alone, not yours, not mine. Theirs.

@Johnson Hi, I've worked in games dev for close to twenty years so I'm well aware of the perks that come with having a one corporation'splastic box full of silicon outselling another corporation's plastic box full of silicon (smiley face).

However I don't think having the dominant console is quite the perk it used to be, the market is far too fragmented these days for that.

@S3M Yep, alongside the PC Engine earlier, I would say the Saturn was a lot of gamers first dabble with the import scene.

Princess Crown, Bomberman Fight, Radiant Silvergun (obviously),Metal Gear, Vampire Savior and that 4 mg cart. Great times.

I was working for a start up dev partly owned by Sony, with a bunch of ex-Rare guys. They all owned PS's but the day I took my Saturn in with Metal Slug and that Bomberman game enlightened them a bit to what they were missiing out on. Both machines were a lot of fun though.

Just that the one I had was a bit more fun ;)

@Erek Explain "cartoon-like", because in my long experience of working in this industry, that is one phrase that is often banded around by people who haven't got a clue what they are talking about. There was nothing cartoon-like about HL2's visuals, considering the game shipped just before the big normal map explosion, it's visuals were some of the most impressive of its time.
