This show could be great but it isn't...

Just get people who are decent at games but competitive as bollocks. Channel 4 did a series of shorts and two vague comedians had me in stitches playing Left 4 Dead because they were arguing about who got what weapon.

A day in the life of an independent video game store

RGeefe

My family ran a second hand shop for years and got out about 10 years ago. High street retail is dead, full stop. Unless you're buying clothes that you need to try on, anything else can be bought online cheaper and with distance selling regs you're fairly sorted.

Yes, it's a shame but it's not just limited to games. Music, film, boardgames, even banks and supermarkets are closing. Western culture is moving towards experiences rather than products.

Sony resurrects MediEvil for PS4

RGeefe

Great idea in principle. Hopefully it's a remake rather than remaster.

As great as the late 90s golden age of platformers was, there was a lot of stuff that was all style and no substance. I wouldn't want my enjoyment of these old classics tainted by revisiting them and seeing they didn't actually have that much to them.

Inside FIFA 18's Weekend League, the gruelling mode that's consuming players' lives

RGeefe

I dip into FIFA once every few years and rarely find much has changed.

However, my understanding is that the online experience is really starting to take over people's lives. The 8-18 bracket, in particular, can be hit hard by this move towards always-online and it will affect things like exam results.

At best, it's all ill-thought out monetisation tactic and, at worst, an irresponsible pressure placed on people.

Stopped renewing when I moved over to PS4. Just not worth it now. Absolutely ridiculous drop in quality of service.

4/5 years ago PS+ got you Red Dead Redemption, Deus Ex HR, Burnout Paradise, Dead Space 2 - all on PS3 and all within 2 years of their release.

Now it's almost exclusively indie games getting put out on PS4.

Seriously considering moving over to Xbox.

I'm not sure what David Cage is trying to say with Detroit

RGeefe

Not a fan of his work. Wanted to like Heavy Rain but I'm always reminded of "Push X to Jason". Schafer is the king of adventure games. It didn't help that I didn't like any of the characters in HR.

Cage just feels like the Wachowskis of gaming. Not 1999 Matrix Wachowksis either.

The big interview: Xbox boss Phil Spencer

RGeefe

Fair enough - seems to have answered as best as he can and it seems like they're not banking everything on the X. I seem to recall a few years ago industry analysts saying it may go more the way of phones where you have generation families - low end, standard and high end but ultimately everything runs about the same.

It's about getting devs to really use the power in X/Pro - but that requires them to set aside dev time and money when they could just ship something out ASAP.

Snooker star says he's a recovering video game addict

RGeefe

It's easy to deride people who get addicted to videogames but it's a very serious thing and I commend him for speaking out about it. Game design has become increasingly incremental and there are studies finally taking place into the way they become addictive through these drip-feed rewards.

For the vast majority, it's a fun hobby but there are those (as with gambling, alcohol, sex, etc) that it is a burden in their life. Let's not mock them.

Sounds like she was stuck between a rock and a hard place. It further compounds the idea that what started as a great idea to bring Lara into the 2010s turned into AAA game by committee. It's a shame because it was pretty decent but just paled in comparison to the Uncharted games. I liked the RPG elements though.

Watch Dogs 2 launch sales nowhere near Watch Dogs 1

RGeefe

I have never understood the sense in releasing all the big games in Autumn. I understand they want to get Christmas sales but that usually works for bigger products like consoles (which typically release in November-ish) but games - no.

For about 5 years, Rockstar moved to spring releases which blew everyone's minds. Everything from GTA 4 to Max Payne 3 released in May. GTA 5 itself dropped in September, picking up a lot of back-to-school/work buzz.

Even the movie industry, as daft as it is, has learned to spread about its releases.

GAME charges people to try PlayStation VR in its shops

RGeefe

I think this highlights just how little thought has gone into the marketing strategies for VR, full stop. I've seen Nintendo have stands in shopping centres specifically to show people their new console. Back in the 90s, Sony had Wipeout playing in clubs (Gatecrasher, I think).

But I haven't seen any company (HTC, Oculus included) showing off the tech. All that I've seen has been adverts or BBC types fawning over it.

It's a pricey bit of kit for the average joe and all companies need to look at themselves and ask what they're doing to get it out there because, as far as I can tell, this is the only instance where people have been able to physically try the thing before buying.

Not saying it's right or wrong but, to my knowledge, it is the only example of potential customers being able to try this type of product before plonking down £300-500 on it.

Video game voice actors strike has officially begun

RGeefe

As much as I am in favour of better pay and treatment....I have a friend who works for *unnamed but MASSIVE game dev* who works 12 hour days, 7 days a week during crunch period in the run-up to launch.

As others have said...the VA's are not the reason for good sales. Fantastic devs who work stupid hours and testers who play the same sections of a game over and over until it runs smoothly are the reason for good sales.

All this strike will do is create division between programmers/ graphics artists/ anyone who makes the actual gameplay and VAs. It could lead to tension and even spite.

Perhaps it would be better if they work together to get better treatment and conditions for everyone. I think the Team Bondi debacle highlights how shit it can be for more than just voice actors.

FIFA 17 review

RGeefe

I think the new Journey mode seems worth a go. FIFA always drops in price around January when the new transfer window opens. You can usually get a new and complete copy for about £20 in a few months. FIFA has always had a horrendously low resale value. I guess it's become so iterative that anything past 6 months is redundant.

I'll pick it up at some point, just to see the single player changes. None of my mates play PES and, for me, that's the kicker (pardon the pun). I've always struggled with online on PES and, as my football mates have moved away, you tend to go with what works.

One day, PES will seriously sort out stuff off the field - I'm not bothered about commentary or presentation, just with being able to navigate it and play a game with friends.

Watch us play (and actually, genuinely enjoy) FIFA 17's Story Mode

RGeefe

It had potential. Played the demo -

- Unskippable cutscenes
- Really unlikeable characters
- Story already seems shonky rags to riches tale - maybe I want to be a League 1 regular with a steady income and reliable in defence?

Pros

- finally something in Fifa that ISN'T FUT
- like the way they've changed set pieces
- challenges are fun, if basic {score a goal, get an assist)

I usually only buy a Fifa once every two or three years. I'll get this, but probably when it hits the 25 quid mark.

Basically - if you played the Fight Night 5 story mode - it's the same thing.
