The best part is that the archived youtube versions are screwed too so I'm guessing the problem was on the upstream from the expo. Well played!

Asda shears £50 off Wii U console prices

Psychotext

"As this price cut is not Nintendo instigated either, this just shows it is retailer greed coming down now, shame if they've harmed sales."

@vert1go You do realise that even without the RRP, retailers will still be paying a certain amount for it right? This isn't retailer greed, it's them desperately trying not to lose too much money on the consoles that they already have in stock.

Joking aside, if this can help people recover after having a stroke then it's money well spent. Fucking horrible thing to go through, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

UK chart: Wii U exclusives absent from top 40 for third week running

Psychotext

@melnificent Worth noting that not a single Wii U game shows up in the individual formats top 40 either. It's not like the titles are selling but are hidden amongst the multiplatforms.

The bigger thing to note is that the UK charts track bundled games too... which means that sales of the premium console must be horrible given that Nintendoland doesn't make the top 40 (sub 3k sales).

Microsoft and the US military are using Kinect to aid veterans with physical therapy

Psychotext

@Kalderyn What exactly is pathetic about it? It's pretty much a perfect use of the tech because the limitations don't really affect it in this instance (you wont need to track individual fingers or have the user make precise motions).

Your Shape works very well on Kinect and I've heard that some of the newer titles like the Nike fitness thing are even better.

So... maybe you should be saying "shitty at anything other than simple dance games and physical fitness titles". Though your point might be somewhat lost then (did you actually have one?).

UK chart: Wii U games miss top 10 as Call of Duty retains crown

Psychotext

Thanks to Chart Track we know that 60% of all the Wii U consoles sold were the premium (30% Zombie U, 10% Basic). We also know that Nintendo Land did about 26k copies (individual and bundled).

With that info at hand we can say that the Wii U sold anywhere up to 43k consoles over the launch weekend. Though obviously it'll be a little less than that as not all of those Nintendo Land copies will have been bundled.

@DigitalScars When you're living with your parents and not paying for life's essentials (you know, food, a roof over your head, heating, those little things) it seems easy to spend your life doing something you see as fun.

Unfortunately those of us who can't mooch off others find it surprisingly difficult to live on fresh air alone. Beyond that, even if they had the time to spend a couple of hours a day on the project (outside of their normal jobs), just how good do you think it would end up, and how long would it take to complete the game?

Maybe they should live off their trust funds for a while? Or sell off their country houses to pay for development.

I for one feel for Harmonix.

Microsoft responds to Polytron's claims that fixing Fez would be too costly

Psychotext

If you want endless patches for free then there's always Xbox Live Indie Games... but then I doubt the greedier indies would go for that one as they would't stand to make as much cash. The option is certainly there though, if you're capable of doing your own advertising especially.

Either way, it's a tradeoff, though they certainly knew what they were getting into when they signed the contracts.

Plus, of course, there's Steam, which he seems happy enough to laud now even though "Fez is a console game, not a PC game. Itís made to be played with a controller, on a couch, on a Saturday morning. To me, that matters; thatís part of the medium. I get so many comments shouting at me that Iím an idiot for not making a PC version. ĎYouíd make so much more money! Canít you see? Meatboy sold more on Steam!í Good for them. But this matters more to me than sales or revenue. Itís a console game on a console. End of story."

...yeah.

Not massively surprising that they'd make some movement on the pricing aspect... at this stage though I get the feeling that Fish really doesn't know what he's doing. One thing is certain though, he's permanently damaged his reputation. You don't just take someone's cash and then say "screw you, it would cost me too much of my profit to fix the game you paid for".

Penny Arcade takes to Kickstarter to go ad-free

Psychotext

Kickstarter related aspects aside, there seem to be a whole lot of people here who have absolutely no idea what the server / datacentre costs are for a site which handles as much traffic as Penny Arcade. Whilst they're not going to be a million a year, I'd be surprised if they were anywhere short of 100k.

That plus 14 staff and you're not looking at as an exorbitant amount of profit as it might seem on the surface.

Project Zomboid devs on The Incident: the theft and loss of two months of work

As a developer I'm really paranoid about this. If I lose my source code, I lose everything. That's why I've got a rotation of backups in multiple places (and one in a safe!).

There was a point in the past where I used to carry an encrypted backup on a USB stick around at all times too. :D

UK Top 40: Ghost Recon holds on to number one

Psychotext

"Interesting that a Vita game has managed to Place so highly in the Multiformat charts! hopefully a good sign for hardware sales too"

Sadly with sales as poor as they are at the moment, 12th place likely only amounts to a couple of thousand sales. (2 weeks ago 12th place was achieved with 3.2k sales).

It's been like this for a while, and probably will be until summer is over.

Diablo 3 listed for PlayStation 3 by German shop

Psychotext

"As long as Diablo III uses Battle.net it will never be released for the Xbox 360 due to Microsoft's policies."

EA gets to use their own network... it's really just a matter of how well you can negotiate. That said, there's a huge difference between losing one game and the entirety of EA's catalogue.

Microsoft vs Motorola legal row gets nasty

Psychotext

Who said they weren't that useful? Strawman much?

I said they're just a small number of patents in what amounts to a MASSIVE total patent pool. You simply can't calculate the value the way you're suggesting and it still be seen as fair and reasonable.
0 0

Psychotext

@vizzini You should probably go and read up on how many patents are involved in h.264. Motorola doesn't even own a meaningful percentage of them (there are over 25 companies owning patents which cover parts of h.264), so I'm not entirely sure why you think they're entitled to so much of the revenue of the xbox. Especially as the h.264 usage on the 360 is hardly of any great significance to the success of the device.

Fair and reasonable this aint.

"Sounds all a bit like semantics to me."

Yet it's exactly what Google and every other search engine does, just in a far less filtered manner. Hell, I can go onto Google right now and find a bunch of direct links to torrents and magnets.

Semantics it may be, but the reality is that they really don't host anything. By comparison, YouTube actually directly hosts a shitload of copyright infringing material and there's not a chance in hell you'd see them DNS banned... yet.

I think the point's not so much that a kid did something clever (which many of us did), but more that he stuck with it for so long even though he never had a customer, adding to it over time without losing interest or giving up.

More than that though, I love to see that from time to time the internet isn't full of cunts, and that we're all still capable of being awesome to each other.
