Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

ProfessorLesser

@Review - on the other hand, why the fuck shouldn't Scott Pilgrim be made into a videogame? Of all the comic-film-game transitions, surely he is the most appropriate? You think just because a film also exists, the console release must be cynical? I say, grow up - you're trying too hard.

Metroid: Other M

The point being, of course, that the author has played the the final product (or near as damn it), and has reported that the aspects some of us are a little worried about do, indeed, appear to suck donkey balls :-(

Machiavellian - God forbid fans should have an opinion, eh? Complaining about a single change doesn't mean we're against change in general. What's wrong with wanting something different? What's wrong with having complained about Halo, Modern Warfare or Fallout? Have we somehow failed as human beings for expressing concern? If the game turns out great then it turns out great, and I might still not like the changes they've made. What's the difference either way? I'm entitled to say what I think, and no, I don't see how that's 'petty'.

Windypops:: "I've never thought of Samus as a particularly rich video game character."

I said potentially rich. Going from virtually zero to constant dialogue is a massive leap for a character - I think Samus' past and attitude could've been fleshed out much more progressively and subtly. Without the need for a full dialogue. I always particularly liked her cursory farewell to the Ing at the end of Echoes - speaks volumes about her.

Muddtallica: "Having Samus as a mute was a quirk Retro imposed in the Prime series for no apparent reason..."

Well, that's not really true, is it. With the exception of Metroid Fusion, Samus is totally silent for, I believe, 99.9% of every other game. Hardly a new idea for Retro! Samus is a lone hunter - Fusion irritated all hell out of me with its hand-holding and preachiness. I'm not bloody surprised Retro went back to gagging her after that! And don't get me started on Prime 3...

Nobody's twisting the facts here. I'm just rather skeptical of this radical extension of a trend in Metroid narration I didn't even like the beginnings of. Fusion and Corruption stand together as reasons why this game should have been a bit more cautious, exposition-wise, in my opinion.

Morztan... I have no faith because reviews have said it sounds shit. I'm not just going to blindly accept shit features. Nobody's complaining for trying something new - I'm extremely excited by all the changes in gameplay (except the new weapon progression idea, which sounds gay on a stick).

Apaar said it first - if you're going to do something, fucking do it right. Why hasn't the VO for a fucking Metroid game, of all the hallmark franchises, not had the shit QA'd out of it?! I just don't understand how this can reach release with such a poor characterisation of one of the most potentially rich videogaming characters left out there. What a damn waste.

Final Fantasy XIII

The article doesn't say there are no towns. It says there are no towns at the beginning of the game.

Also, I don't like the closing paragraph, implying people coulndn't keep up with the change FFXII made, as opposed to not liking it for some other legitimate reason. I didn't find it disorientating - I found it boring.

Bold it was though, and it's disappointing not to see FFXIII at least trying something else.

I thought the review was pretty poor as well, to be honest. What a pointless introduction.

7/10 seems spot on for me so far. Lots of it does feel like RPG-Lite. Most of the game is relatively un-innovative (have you played RPGs before, DFawkes?!) and therefore boring and certain bits of the game, as mentioned in the review, are just bad. However, the interesting story and recruitment opportunities make me want to keep playing!

The Big, Fat Question

ProfessorLesser

@ProfessorLesser

Sorry, but I disagree. I don't think videogames make anybody fat. I suppose it's easy to have something to blame, but I think it's simple. People who are fat eat too much and don't exercise enough. It's the people themselves. Scapegoats aren't gong to decrease obesity, but further educating the public as to the the benefits of burning off excess calories and eating the right foods in the first place will. I lost a stone and a half last year - I was a bit overweight. Once I recognised this I cut down on food and exercised a bit more - hey presto I lost weight.

I think a lack of personal responsibility is to blame. As for fat kids - I think it's their parents.

I'm not saying we should blame videogames, and scapegoats are not the answer. But it's pretty undeniable that, on average, across the population, computer games are a contributing factor to obesity, as is absolutely anything that promotes prolonged periods of inactivity. This is pretty common sense. I'm not saying computer games 'make' you fat, I'm saying they contribute, and they do. When targeting an epidemic, you can't put everything down to personal responsibility and expect people to get on with it. Precisely what do you think articles like this are if they're not "educating the public", anyway?

Personal responsibility is almost always a factor as well, but the extent to which free will and choice can play a role in weight balance varies from person to person. Some people just get fat easily, others do not so readily lay down fat. Some people will get fat no matter what. In the end, it's the environment that makes us fat - nobody can get fat without consuming more calories than they burn - but the extent to which this happens depends upon our genes, and varies between individuals.

@floppylobster - the brain actually uses a relatively constant amount of energy, no matter what it's doing! Chess is as demanding as Eastenders in that respeect, I'm afraid.

@polar - you are right, to an extent, except you have generalised far too much. For some people it genuinely will be the case that without videogames they'd probably exercise more, and that number is likely to be significant. Our environment over the years has become increasingly obesogenic, both in the rise of inactivity and the increase in food intake. If either is slowed, then obesity would also be slowed. It's not simply a case of fat people having to find something else to avoid exercise with - while it may be true for some individuals, it's an extremely unfair view to take towards the obese population who are simply more prone to obesity than others.

Not that I'm encouraging any of you comments tards to do that ;-)

Nintendo not cutting hardware prices

"You do realize that they could have easily boosted production a long time ago, but the "it's still sold out" is more valuable to them.W

Got any evidence to back this up? Seems to me they're long past the need for spin. If they could be making more units to make more money with, I think they'd be doing it. This isn't a launch issue - Wii has made its mark already.

groovemeister - that is the most wrong you have ever been about anything :D

It's way too easy to point your finger at rose-tinted spectacles when you personally don't get on with the game, but the sad truth of the matter is that you're just dead inside. Dead, rotten and evil. Do you even realise how many kittens you just killed?
