Grainger Games tells shops not to open, they are being closed

PaulLFC

This is a shame, I like Grainger Games. A much better alternative to Game here locally.

Am I understanding correctly that the business would have likely been fine to continue trading had the banks not reduced their credit for who knows what reason, effectively it seems forcing them into either a sale or bankruptcy?

That seems incredibly unfair on the staff, who appear to be losing their jobs not through the business making poor decisions, or doing badly from a financial perspective; but because banks have seemingly taken the liquidity from the business at extremely short notice, and as a consequence the jobs the business provides with it. There is something wrong when even businesses that seem profitable and on the right track can be forced into financial difficulty.

Hopefully all of the staff can find work quickly.

One of the features that keeps players coming back are the weekly challenges. Half the criteria challenges are graded on are Spotlight Songs. Each new set of Spotlight Songs features two tracks players already have as well as one newly-released DLC song, which players have to buy. Don't purchase the track, don't top the scoreboards - a prospect inconceivable to the most competitive players.

Nintendo says Switch dead pixels "normal", not a defect

PaulLFC

It amazes me that screen manufacturers can (and clearly have managed to) get away with this. By definition even one dead pixel is a defect as the screen clearly isn't working as it was designed to (i.e. all pixels working). One dead pixel should be enough to gain an automatic replacement.

It's because of this I always dread the first day of getting a new TV, monitor or handheld with a screen - the initial power on and "is the screen working properly"?

Decided to play through the other games in the series, of which I have all bar Yakuza 2 - which annoyingly, is the only one which seems to be out of stock everywhere. Prices on eBay are > 50, so hopefully Sega will put them on PSN as a PS2 classic at some point.

Dead Rising 4 outsold The Last Guardian

@Frosty840 Yes, because instead of posting an update to the article as they normally would, Eurogamer have edited the wording, which has made my comment look out of place - but no mention was made of the release dates when I commented.

Here's the Google cached version which makes no mention of the sentence you quoted: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Yec0oU4_Wf4J:www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-12-12-dead-rising-4-outsold-the-last-guardian+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk

Not very impressive there, EG.

EDIT: Since the cached version has now updated to include EG's stealth edit, here's a screenshot of how it looked originally. @tomphillipsEG in future, mind clarifying when you edit articles?

PaulLFC

Something which the article doesn't mention is that Dead Rising 4 was released 3 days before The Last Guardian (December 6th vs December 9th), so it would have been more of a surprise if it didn't outsell it.

Edit: I see EG have edited the wording now which makes it look like the above is incorrect - here's the version they originally went with when I commented which makes no mention of the release dates: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Yec0oU4_Wf4J:www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-12-12-dead-rising-4-outsold-the-last-guardian+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk

Edit 2: Since the cache will also update to the new version, here's a screenshot of what it looked like originally.

Merger between the UK's two biggest video game magazine publishers given the go-ahead

PaulLFC

So the CMA prove yet again that they are a useless organisation who fail to adhere to the basic mandate they are supposed to fulfil.

This is another "Game buys Gamestation" sitatuation where yet again they either completely fail to understand the gaming and in this case magazine markets, or they just don't care enough do do even a half decent job.

I need to get looking at how to send the CMA a comment on this. I hope the merger gets blocked - Future have been shutting magazines down left right and centre and I don't for a second believe they'll keep both Edge and GamesTM running side by side - not to mention that there would be only one publisher in gaming magazines at the very least, if not other sectors like history/science mags.

Steam's sale changes were a huge success

PaulLFC

The negative from removing flash sales is however much you tell most publishers to "offer your best discount" as Valve did, the majority of them won't bother. Having a game 80% off for ~8 hours is justifiable to them for the increased sales, but 80% off for 2 weeks is something most of them won't do, so we get inferior discounts.

The amount of games on my wishlist where I looked at the discount and went "nope, I can wait for a better deal" is quite substantial. When Steam conditions its userbase with past sales to wait for 75% off or more, when you suddenly see the same games at 50% or less it doesn't inspire you to want to purchase them as quickly.

Oculus founder Palmer Luckey: "We don't make money on the Rift"

PaulLFC

Saying something "is cheap for what it is" does not automatically make it so. If the general perception is that the product is too expensive, then saying "but really it's cheap!" probably won't do much to combat that.

I'm sure if they could have priced this cheaper they would have, but I know for me personally, it's too expensive - at 530 delivered I can wait until the inevitable improved, and probably cheaper, version in a couple of years' time.

Looks like Driveclub Bikes for PS4 is a thing

PaulLFC

Driveclub has been one of the biggest surprises for me on PS4 so far. Wasn't too keen on it after hearing about the launch issues, but I bought it when it was half price - then almost immediately bought the season pass, because the amount of content they were offering at that price was more than worth it.

I rarely buy DLC unless it's on sale, but I made a point of buying the DC season pass because in the days of ever increasing season pass prices, it seemed like a bargain - and that's what it turned out to be. Not to mention all the free content they've added too.

I'd definitely be interested in a Bikes expansion, or even a "season pass 2" if they keep the content to price ratio the same.

This should be illegal. Yeah if it's broken "it doesn't work anyway", but that isn't the point. You still have access to the product you bought. This way, you no longer have access to that product, and Capcom has kept your money. This should be classed as theft.

PES 2016 players up in arms over roster update delay

PaulLFC

It's a shame - the game is brilliant, yet the overall impression is lessened by amateur stuff like this. Launching with massively outdated lineups knowing full well they wouldn't be able to update until *the end of October* a month and a half later, and still releasing the product? Says more about Konami to be honest, and it's a shame the PES team have to work under them, as there are clearly a lot of positives with the actual game itself.

That is unacceptable.

Yes you can get refunds, but that isn't the point. The developer, or whoever has requested this, should not be able to, effectively, remotely deactivate legitimate purchases leaving people without the product they have paid for.

Presumably they were going to keep quiet about it as well judging by someone having to get into contact with their customer service to figure out why they can't access what they've bought any more.

@Dizzy "Reviewed on PS4" - it's in the article.

The advertising of the PC version and its resulting "bundle" has been a disgrace and should be looked into as a case of false advertising, but that in no way relates to the version reviewed and the outstanding gameplay that version provides - that version deserves the score it received.

Three Football Manager games announced for 2015

PaulLFC

The introduction of Football Manager Touch as a standalone offering - playable across computer and tablet - means that we now offer something for everyone.
Doesn't it really mean "We've taken a fairly large component of the PC version (FM Classic mode) and decided to charge separately for it, so if you want something comparable to last year's offering in scope, you have to buy two games"?

'FM Touch' is a silly name anyway considering it's available on PC. Should have stuck with FM Classic.

Edit: Well, looks like I was wrong - further research indicates 'FM Touch' is included in the full PC version, just like last year then. Good news.

Steam Workshop now allows modders to sell their work

PaulLFC

@LordDemigod I can, when Bethesda are demanding 50% of the price (2 times what the actual *creator* of the mod gets...). That's what's bad. Did they make the game? Yes, but they also got paid when people bought said game. They should get some cut, but 50% is ridiculous. They got 0% of free mods (obviously), why do they suddenly think their "contribution" (which is nothing extra on top of the mod tools available to free mods) is worth half of every sale? It isn't.

Then again, this is Bethesda / Zenimax we're talking about here. I wouldn't expect less from them, the latest in an increasingly long line of questionable decisions and disagreeable business practices.

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion pushes on despite trademark battle

PaulLFC

"There can be only one reason for choosing the name 'Rebellion' as the name of this game, and that is that it is identical to our client's name. The choice of name for your game is designed to confuse members of the public into believing that this game emanated from our client or has been endorsed by our client."

What an utterly absurd suggestion. Are there games called "Heavy Rain: Quantic Dream", "Call of Duty: Infinity Ward", "Mass Effect: Bioware Adventures", and so on? No there are not.

If it was called "Sins of a Solar Empire, by Rebellion" or "Rebellion presents Sins of a Solar Empire", they might have a point - but it isn't.

I hope Ironclad win this and then receive damages for the utterly frivolous nature of this opposition.

Tech Interview: Trials Fusion

PaulLFC

One thing I hope they spend time improving for the next version (or better still, patch Fusion, but I can't see this particular aspect changing now) is the collision detection.

I don't think I've played a game that features as many collision issues in years. The skill games are great fun, but the immersion is damaged more than a bit when your bike (or whatever object, basketball etc) clips through the ground, a building, vehicle or something else, for no apparent reason, and you "lose" through no fault of your own. Okay, the fist time, no big deal - try again - until you find out that that particular object or spot within the level has a constant problem, so you'll *always* fail if that's where you land.

I mean, I could understand it for some objects, but clipping through road etc? I'm not even sure how that got through (no pun intended).
