Why the games media has a diversity problem - this website especially

OllyJ

Recently our games company opened up two positions, one for a sound designer and one for an audio coder. We had a lot of interest, but zero from women.

We went to Twitter and other sites to promote this issue and get some diversity and nothing. We went to the universities and they said the female turnout for courses is practically zero, colleges say the same.

This issue is not going to change any time soon unless we get females into this earlier at school/college level. We can’t hire it seems, even if we try.

I get your point though, it was probably a statement.

The video game industry's loot box problem isn't going away

OllyJ

I wish just for once Eurogamer, you might take the time to investigate why we have loot boxes. What reason do they exist? Is there a better way?

You keep needling the industry, without ever presenting how we got here, leaving nothing to go on other than “money making bastards!”

I’d like to hear the other side please. And start a debate on how to fix it.

@Syrette I'd be happy with old maps as I never got the chance to play TF1, what with being a Sony fan nerd.
1 0

OllyJ

@Naetharu 100% it does, I can never even scratch the leaderboard on COD but I'm a regular man of the match on TF2.

Ultimately you don't tend to have too many close up battles, it's mostly at mid range and the fact that even if you do shit, you eventually get your perk/titan means you actually get good at using those things.

unlike COD where you can only use them by getting silly amounts of kills.

It's one of these simple to get into and compete, but plenty of substance to actually learn and become a good player at it. BUY IT!

You know what, I absolutely love this game. The campaign is incred and the multiplayer is excellent, here's why:

The feeling of an escalating battle is just awesome, you start off as a wee chap running about with your COD style loadout, sure ok this is fine, but after a few minutes of carefully killing the enemy you get to call in your titan and before you know it the whole map has become a Mech battlezone. It's just intense, but in a nicely building way.

Also, taking down a Titan as a wee chap is the best, you can really string together your movement to become a right fly in the ointment to these huge machines.

Just go and get it, the Maps are great, they are free and greedy devs is something I see a lot of moaning about, this is the opposite of that so do yourself a favour and pick it up.

GAME launches unattractive new £36 loyalty card scheme

OllyJ

@tomphillipsEG Fair point, but that only really works for consoles to a degree, like how it works for Apple. To be able to try any new game is never going to happen due to stock/space limitations. So you're left with the same model.

Ultimately if the trade-in service ever went away (it almost did with Xbone), then they'd be done for. Just like Blockbusters, I can't see the high street game store surviving, gone in a decade when streaming services are more reliable.

@Mar27w Yeah that's the thing, the satisfaction of FINISHING your opponent rather than just first to deplete the health bar.

It's an amazing mechanic, end them with a finisher or run the risk of them getting you in the danger zone. Made for some intense fights. Utterly unique.
