Iranian students' anti-US game

Mr.Small

It always made sense to me to have a game where you're the underdog fighting against the US war machine. Video games are like that - fighting against impossible odds e.g. a single member of STARS against a horde of zombies, Gorden Freeman against the inhabitants of Black Mesa, a single R-type ship against the Bydo etc.

As we know, America has the greatest military force on the planet due to the obscene amounts of money spent on it. What better than to play as a single soldier wreaking havok against this almighty opposition. Better yet to play as an Iranian, since that country isn't aggresive but is being harrassed by the West regardless.

Anyhow, I'd play the game...

No Wii without pre-order

Mr.Small

So it will be virtually impossible, except for some lucky people, to buy the wii in shops before christmas? That's going to be a lot of disappointed kids.

Is anyone planning, like me (who has his pre-order for tomorrow in with Amazon), to try and plow through zelda etc and then sell the Revolution again before the 25th. I'm not in it for the money, I'm just thinking of those people missing out. Won't somebody please, think of the children.

Microsoft buys Lionhead

Mr.Small

I always felt guilty about not buying Lionhead games e.g. BW2 & Fable, since I would like to support a local company and Peter Molyneux does have great ideas and ambition etc. However, now I don't have to feel guilty about not buying future titles since they've hooked up with evil Microsoft (they'll always be evil in my mind). So in future I'll only buy a Lionhead game if it's absolutely triple A material.

Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams

Mr.Small

Hazzah! 6 / 10 suits me fine. I've played all the Onimushas to date but I just didn't feel in any way excited by this one. So a painfully-average score and criticisms of long, repetitive gameplay mean that I can skip this title without feeling guilty.

Commandos: Strike Force

Mr.Small

Please, please, please return to the beautifully-rendered isometric view. No-one else has achieved the same stunning style as you guys at Pyro Studios and as far as I know no-one is trying to at this time either.

Why don't you bring back the old-style commandos on the DS? The DS would be perfect for directing commandos and I'm sure the machine would be capable of displaying graphics of the same quality of the first three Commandos games.

Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter

Mr.Small

For example, walking up to a wall now puts you flat against it if you continue to hold the direction for half a second, and once activated you can then automatically peek out from a corner by holding the direction required.

Hang on, that's not such an innovative control method. I seem to remember I could do that ages ago in Tenchu.

Anyway, GR:AW does look nice but to my mind, looking at the available videos, it all looks a bit fiddly e.g. lots of distracting bits on the HUD. But then again, I am a simpleton. If only they kept the graphics but got rid of the future war/hi-tech weapons scenario and filled the environment up with zombies. I think I'll wait till Resident Evil 5. By the way, did I mention that I'm a simpleton?

Iwata, Fils-Aime comment on Revolution plans for '06

Mr.Small

All you're points are fine, Carlo, but you only focus on the gamer and his/her loyalty. The big money is to be made with the non-gamer and it is they that Nintendo are making a special effort to reach e.g. make the controller look like a TV remote. If Nintendo can release fun games that are intuitive to play and that anyone can pick up then, who knows, you may even see the Revolution in your parents/grandparents house. I have every confidence that Nintendo will pull off something spectacular with their new controller, having seen from the DS what incredible innovations can result from using a stylus as the input device. Just to give an example, I was playing Kirby last night and I was gobsmacked at how intuitive it was to protect Kirby from lasers by drawing a line that blocks. So simple, obvious and intuitive and yet impossible without the stylus and touch screen.

If I was setting up a games company now, Iíd focus exclusively on the Revolution and make learning games for kids 2-6. Iím sure someoneís going to do it and that way Nintendo can sell the machine not only as a wonderful gaming console (which Iím sure it will be) but as an invaluable education tool and lots more besides!

I should have known better. It is a tomb raider game, after all. I remember the bus adds for Angel of Darkness advertising the game as out a week before it actually arrived. Luckily, that delay allow me to read the reviews first and avoid it!

Halo 3 to see off PS3

Mr.Small

Hear hear, Azu87. The irony is I bought an xbox when it came out at its initial £300 price-tag specifically to play halo. I've never played such an overhyped but painfully average game as halo. I don't get it and never will. After completing it, I sold my xbox but unfortunately the price had dropped in the meantime. Needless to say, I smoulder with genuine rage. So screw xbox 360 and halo3 and roll on Sony.

Hi Kristan/krudster.

Nice write ups. Since you had an opportunity to witness the new GTA in action, I was wondering if you had the sound up. Was the radio tuned into any talk station? Believe it or not, the thing I'm most interested in is not the draw distance, fps, eating etc. but the humour. Vice city was perfect when it came to humour, IMHO.

Commandos 3: Destination Berlin

Mr.Small

Raime, wasn't there a mission in Commandos2 were you got to command a squad of Gurkas?

I think if they did add an Indian or any other minority character they would make him as a caricature with a funny accent etc. Just look at Butcher O'Hara. They would probably then be accused of racism!

Incidently, I prefered O'Hara's accent from the first Commandos game - a good Cavan accent.

Just going on the demo from PEx, I have to say that I thought it was excellent. It's such a buzz to build up the tune and then, when you're on a roll, get the next phrase right and hear the bass kick in. Perhaps it's just one of those love/hate games, but I'm very much looking forward it.

Just thought I contribute something positive, since most post so far have been nay-sayers.
