Mirror's Edge proved that the best magic is based on limitations

Metalfish

At first I thought the article was going to be about how when you're taking a shortcut through an office building, it feels like you could bowl into a bleary-eyed office worker round any corner... ...but of course there's no one there.

You don't question that the only other human beings you encounter are trying to kill you, that this city makes no sense since it's otherwise perpetually empty (were there civilians safely tucked out of reach at ground level? I did I imagine them?)

Good article.

Dark Souls 3 review

Metalfish

Too many specifics in this review for my liking -which I appreciate is a weird complaint. You're coming across as that excitable friend who's seen a movie before you have and is desperate to spill all the best bits. Although I doubt you've really spoiled anything, it kinda feels like you've forgotten how insane we Souls players can get about such things.

"whether or not it'll be possible to put bounties on Malkavian players for thinking they're funnier than they are"

Quite so. It's misguided to think "the lore" won't be sorely tested by players acting, er, out of character.

Anyway, this is sounding very interesting. Keep us informed EG. I demand it.

Skyrim's Hearthfire DLC weighs just 75MB, out now

Metalfish

Bethesda, you won't read this so I'll make it brief:

Skyrim is 30 worth of game. I expect (perhaps wrongly, but I do expect nonetheless) something vaguely approximate to a third more game for the price of Dawnguard and no one has convinced me that it's anything like that much value (notice I didn't say 'content').

This DLC is actually priced a lot more bite-size despite being a pretty small morsel and quite a acquired taste by the look of it. I'm less unimpressed by this, honestly. Shivering Isles-ness would probably convince me to break my Bethsoft digital download duck.

Valve bans Steam users creating fake Greenlight projects

Metalfish

It was quite frankly very naive/brave for Valve not to have a basic application process for the submission of games to weed out the bollocks.

Personally I'd have made sure only accounts with 10+ worth of purchases can apply and vote with a feck off warning saying "we will kill your stuff for arsing about". That'd set the forums ablaze with whinging, but it'd give their bans some teeth.

The best class to start as isn't the engy -too many newbies play what is a very specialised class rather badly. Medic or soldier is what I'd recommend, followed by heavy and pyro and finally moving on to demoman and scout. You won't need to play sniper or spy, 'cause someone else will be, quite possibly very badly.

Lost Humanity 8: Days of Nothing

I genuinely love the way Rob's articles turn the EG comments section into the RPS ones. Even the angry people are eloquent, for the most part.

Since I feel the need to chip in; I'd say the comment was ignorant but probably the least of recent "sexism mini-scandals" in the gaming industry of late. Harley Quinn up there such really have been the catalyst for this article.

Lost Humanity 5: Being THEM

Metalfish

@riz23 There's a lot going on in this article, but the principle points are about the barriers to entry and genuine existential issues with videogames. As much as our fictional protagonist doesn't "get" videogames (which sucks for him) he's more than able to experience the problems with them (legitimately I guess).

This doesn't mean he's right to dismiss games out of hand. I don't want to put words in Rob's mouth here though, so I'd say go with your own interpretation.

Whatever you do, stay away from the official forums for any reason other than checking for patch notes. The vocal minority of the community around this game are some of the most off putting things, parochial, arrogant and liable to throw poo at absolutely everything.

Rocket (mod creator) sometimes appears to cross the line from "the tough love of my vision" to "coming across dickishly", but he does admirably in the face of such troglodytes and he's got principles worth respecting -not that he needs our approval.

Report: EA rejects Mirror's Edge 2 pitch

Metalfish

Just wait until Brink comes out. If it's successful (which it probably will be, assuming it isn't released at exactly the same time as a halo/call of duty/Rockstar game) then I imagine the movement and style that Mirror's Edge pioneered will become something that the big publishers will sit up and take note of.

I understand the needs of business, but this is still an enormous fucking shame.

It's interesting to contrast the thoughts here to those of "everyone's favourite dev who they don't actually buy games from": Double Fine -they're finding that putting all their time and money into one, big, creative (and risky) game doesn't seem worththe trouble any more.

Again, good luck to all those ex-RTW guys, if nothing else, that character editor was incredible.
