Microsoft kills game ownership and expects us to smile

Mattyd-360

@frazzl I am more annoyed about the 24 hour check in. What right has Microsoft got to check in on me every day? It's not nice being seen as a thief and untrustworthy when I have given them tonnes of money over the years

Mattyd-360

@null Ok, fair enough, but what about five years into next gen? Microsoft switched off the servers for the original xbox, but I can still go back and play my single player games, when support drops for the Xbox One, I can't go back and play some single player games, the whole console becomes unusable

Mattyd-360

@_tangent You honestly think that if the platform becomes unprofitable in the future, Microsoft won't turn the servers off. Game companies, including Microsoft, do this a lot

@intpleeus How on earth is this the same as games? What a terrible analogy

Mattyd-360

Man, there are some serious Microsoft apologists here. Whoever is happy with what Microsoft are offering have no respect for their consumer rights. Microsoft, with their 24 hour check in is essentially viewing you as a thief that cannot be trusted enough to own your games. They need to check on you every day to make sure you haven't done anything they don't like

And what happens when the Xbox One is replaced by Microsoft? That's right. the console becomes a brick as Microsoft can turn off the servers. The Xbox One won't work offline so kiss your investment of all of your games goodbye

Oh and it IS NOT the same as Steam. Steam doesn't have a 24 hour check in service. It is not locked to a certain piece of hardware. Steam has awesome sales that make the fact you can't trade stuff in bearable.

Mattyd-360

@OliverH You are so right. Publishers need to release on both popular platforms. Otherwise they are cutting out a significant portion of revenue. Investor's would question why they are not supporting a platform that is popular.

Even if EA aren't satisfied with Sony's approach in the future, with used games etc. if the PS4 sells like hotcakes, they have no choice but to put their games on the system.

And flying through the tech specs and RAm. Says a lot of how under powered it is compared to the PS4 IMO

EA to discontinue Online Passes

Mattyd-360

There is no way EA has done this out of the goodness of their hearts. It just isn't how they operate.

There will be something else that they have discovered that makes them more money than online passes, probably micro transactions, or some sort of used games block

@BonzoBanana You are so right. GAME are profitable at the amount of stores they have now. They grew far to quickly so no matter how much money they made, the costs were astronomical. I found out the rent at the Cabot Circus store in Bristol that closed, the figure was ridiculous.

And buying these new stores, I bet they are in towns where there is no HMV anymore, so it makes sense for them to expand a bit, especially with new consoles coming.

Activisions approach last year caused absolute carnage. Some people didn't receive copies until a week after release because retailers weren't able to ship before a certain date.

Report: Microsoft in talks to revive Heroes TV show on Xbox

Mattyd-360

@mannyYearsAgo If both have the same architecture then development costs won't be reduced much if one fails, unlike the current consoles that are very different.

Most rumours suggest that the next consoles will be very similar with a bit of a power advantage for the ps4

Mattyd-360

Microsoft are having a serious identity crisis. It will be funny if they use "original tv series" as a genuine selling point of the next console. I hate to break it to you Microsoft but tv shows is not what sells consoles, games do.

There is no creativity. It seems they are just going to do this because Netflix was successful with house of cards. Same with tablets, and they completely messed that up too

Next Xbox games run from hard drive, discs not supported post-install - report

Mattyd-360

@joedeamaral The majority of preowned games that are sold are in the 5-10 range. No new game is that cheap unless it is a few years old.

Publishers think that because someone has bought the game preowned for a tenner, that they have lost a 30 sale. That is not the case. If new game prices were accessible for people I wouldn't have an issue with this, but I can guarantee that even if used game sales are stopped, new game prices won't come down like they should.

And yes they did make that much but certain games still smashed revenue records last year
3 0

Mattyd-360

@Teugeus Thats fair enough. I hardly ever buy pre owned. It's more the fact people believe that pre owned is destroying the industry.

After doing a study on the games industry for my uni course, and working in a game retailer from my experience the total impact of pre owned is tiny.

Publishers think that it is a lost sale. It just isn't.

Like has been said, those people preordering are just showing confidence in the product. I don't see anything wrong with them wanting to secure a PS4 in the first batch, and at the likely launch partner of Sony. GAME will get A LOT of the stock in the UK, that can be guaranteed.

Destiny: Bungie unveils its shared-world shooter

Mattyd-360

@meepmeep so true, through experience, most of the community on Xbox live I would rather not be playing with.

I don't want to be playing destiny and then a complete stranger pops up to 'help'.
1 1

Mattyd-360

Was looking forward to this game. Now though I'm not so sure. Bungie seem to have their head so far up their behinds that they don't realise having an always online game, especially on consoles, could wipe out a lot of their potential market. We realise you made a great franchise in halo, but be humble about it, not cocky, it comes across very badly.

I have good Internet, but even that has cut out a few times over the last few days. If I had destiny I would be buggered.

Like others have said, I don't understand this social aspect bullcrap that has invaded games in recent times, fine, if I want to play online then give me the choice, but don't force me to play with people. I love playing games on my own. It may surprise developers that many gamers actually prefer the single player aspect to games, me being one of them.

Also, I'm pretty certain micro transactions will wiggle its way into this game, it's activision after all.

It's time to ignore Dead Space 3's micro-transactions

Mattyd-360

@Pandy Sorry, I don't understand how it would make the industry creatively bankrupt?

And like you, I care enormously about the games industry. I love games, but I don't understand the fuss over this particular game's micro transactions.

Micro transactions are already in games. Battlefield is one, as well as Mass Effect, and these do not effect my enjoyment of those games at all, and I can guarantee they won't affect my enjoyment of dead space, because they are not required to be purchased for me to complete the game.

Games companies do realise there is a line. They understand that if a micro transaction in the future is required to progress in a game they would have gone to far

Mattyd-360

Thank god, a sensible article about this "issue". It's peoples own money, I don't care if they choose to spend their money in a stupid way.

As long as it doesn't affect my progress in a game, I don't have a problem with it, it's just businesses trying to make extra money like all businesses need to do.

People are talking on here like they are being forced to make these micro transactions. The fact is, you're not, it is your own choice whether you purchase extra stuff. I would never do it, because it would kill the experience, but I can imagine there are plenty of people who would

@forbeslongden thank you. Finally someone speaking my language. People on here saying that you don't need to know about games to work at GAME are wrong. The whole interview process for GAME is based on your knowledge of games. At least the store I had an interview for was. If you can't talk about games, both past, present, and future, you will not have a hope in hell of getting a job.

It's disappointing that people still have bad impressions of GAME. All I know is that the store I work in is desperate to change that image. All the staff in our store are trained to talk to customers and we love having convos with our customers.

People will still ignore this even though I know it's fact

@jabberwoky I can't go into to much detail obviously. The one example I will say was GAME's market share on the 3ds xl which really was ridiculous. Nintendo wouldn't have had any success with that in the UK if it wasn't for GAME.

Apart from that one example, the main thing is that GAME are Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony's only major partner in the UK. They rely massively on GAME to sell there products, which is why GAME always have exclusives and other places don't.

Sorry I couldn't go into more detail but I'm sure you can understand
