I'm fine with everything except locking content to specific CPU's, that particular trick, or should I say precedent, that Intel are trying to set on this one is ludicrous. It's not just limited content, in this first case of CPU exclusive games with Arizona Sunshine (that has since been rescinded, thankfully), to a brand of CPU, with this game you can only have the hardest difficulty and single player horde mode on a latest generation i7 CPU, so just the 6700k, and that's it. What is the point of this, no one is going to upgrade their CPU, and possibly motherboard too, for a few missing modes.

@Nikanoru Don't forget the flip side though, many games were released with small bugs and could never get fixed! Remember Moonstone on the Amiga, one of my favourite ever games, but getting to the end without it crashing was really rare!

And of course, there's Jet Set Willy, despite being a really popular game, it was actually impossible to finish because of it's bug.

But yeah, it's kind of gone the opposite direction now, with publishers forcing devs to push out games before they've fully play tested the code and squashed all the bugs. There is a hell of a lot more money involved nowadays, where missing the deadlines can lead to studio closures and layoffs in some cases, so I guess I can see why it happens, but it is annoying.

Rez Infinite review

MasterNameless

@spekkeh Sizu is wrong, there is actually only a few true PS exclusives. Rigs is one of them, can't think of others at the mo.

All the others are 'Play first on PSVR' with varying lengths of timed exclusivity. Resident Evil is 12 months... but the rest are between 3 and 6 months I think. Rez IS coming to Vive though, yeah. :D

Oculus Rift's latest attempt to block piracy backfires

MasterNameless

If Oculus /really/ wanted to pour money into exclusive games, they should make a big deal that that is exactly what they are doing, pouring money into a game, no doubt at quite a loss, to help drive VR at this early stage, but still have games that will run on any of the HMD's on their store. Like Steam does, and competition is good for the market! They shouldn't, however, make such a huge raft of exclusives, and make their oculus store entirely exclusive at the same time. Steam has plenty of games that run on both the Rift and the Vive, and the only ones exclusive to Vive are only that way because the Rift's Touch controllers aren't out yet... they're certainly not official 'exclusives'.

Creating such an exclusive, walled garden, feels like they're trying to lock people into their purchases, a la itunes. That is what's getting everyone's back up. Especially with PC gamers, who a little sensitive to this sort of thing!

MasterNameless

@Pasco Because the VR headsets are basically just monitors strapped to your face - nothing to do with the hardware that's required to drive them, with the right code they can run on anything. Making Oculus Rift exclusive games is closer to making games that can only run on panasonic/samsung/sony monitors.

It's still not an ideal example, with the R&D poured into these headsets at this early stage, but it's closer than comparing displays to consoles.

@obidanshinobi That wasn't a review. The guy hadn't even finished playing the game himself - and it's not a long game! If he can play it for just an hour or two and feel he can spout such drivel (specifically the bit at the end where he says if anyone who enjoys the game must be a woman - wth!?) and call it a review, and then yes, I think UncleLou can very much dismiss the video after two minutes! There's a nice irony to that, in fact.

That claim of hilarious is clearly subjective, so not going anywhere near that link! He may have loads of youtube followers, but there are hundred's of random guys out there with loads of youtube followers! It's kind of a big bandwagon nowadays, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

@grassyknoll The real reason that digital pricing won't drop, is that neither MS, Sony nor Nintendo want to undercut and drive the high streets out of business. As impulse buys, and more importantly console sales and bundles, are really bloody important to both of them. Understandably!

They really need the high streets to remain healthy, as that is that is where the major push is when consoles, new price drops and bundles are released. It's still a major thing in sales, and consequently, games sold (physical and digital) over the following years.

Edit: Although, you're no doubt correct that publishers love getting away with charging these prices though!

I hate to be a pedant (well, that could be a lie...), but that is the wrong use of myriad. It should either be "made myriads of misteps", or "...made myriad misteps". The word is so often misused it's defined use will probably be adjusted in the dictionary sooner or later.

Nice article though, good to see that there are indeed investigations into where the money actually gets spent on these more dubious kickstarters.

Work-in-progress Cities: Skylines mod brings first-person multiplayer

MasterNameless

@Ranek I'm pretty sure...

That it is "an FPS", but as you say, "a first person shooter".

Similar to, "an HD television", and "a history lesson".

It depends on the pronunciation of that first letter. "A FPS", just doesn't flow off the tongue properly. It's all about the "eff" sound for FPS, and the "f" sound at the beginning of first.

My two cents.

@Vanmunt Not sure what the youth of today has to do with it - if anything, 20 years back, in the Amiga days, it was far far worse.

This "sense of entitlement" buzz-phrase seems to be very popular in the last few years, as if it's suddenly a new thing. It really isn't. It's also quite an annoying phrase, as it gets repeated twenty times in every thread like this one.

But hey, we all know gamers love repeating the same old tired arguments over and over again. I guess that'll never change either!

@mega-gazz Are you sure you're not just looking at the RRP? As I'm pretty sure the RRP for 360 pads were 50 too.

If you look online, Xbox One pads are 40 to buy, which is the same as 360 pads were, back when it was released. I see they've dropped to 25 now though, hopefully X1 pads will drop over time too.

I haven't bought a second pad for either next gen console, but damn... have only just noticed how expensive the ps4 pads are - 15 more expensive! >_<

Hmm, kind of gone off topic there - sorry!

Correction: Xbox one controllers seem to be 45, PS4 controllers... 60, so the RRP's are 55 and 70/75!? The Xbox pad is only a fiver more, the PS4's one is quite painful!

EA PS4 games cost an eye-watering 63 from PlayStation Store

MasterNameless

@apoc_reg Yeah, it is - and that's mental, but I'm not talking about that.

Cjail was just stating that VAT was part of the reason for the difference between UK and US prices - it had nothing to do with this 8 difference. He was responding to something that was already slightly off-topic. Probably the confusion.

The only reason I can see for this Xbox/PS thing, and considering that it's the same for exclusives and multiplatform titles (not the overall cost, but the price difference, between the Xbox exclusives too) - it has to be extra charges somewhere on Sony's end. Which is odd, and yeah... madness indeed!
0 0

MasterNameless

@macmurphy Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it has to do with the RRP's - which we know are very high, and the shops selling the physcial copies just discount them every time instead - and having to stick with that price.

Something to with anti-competition laws I think?

If that is the reason, I wouldn't mind knowing a bit more about that too.
1 0

MasterNameless

@apoc_reg He was responding to the US/UK difference not the Xbox/PS difference.

Obviously MS pay[sic]* VAT.

Just that US prices are listed without VAT added, and we have it with the VAT added. And we pay more VAT than they do too.

Still doesn't quite make up for the difference between US and UK prices, but it does make up for a good chunk of it at least - the rest is apparantly "higher transport costs, etc.", how much of that we believe is another story.

*Charges VAT, not pay for. Any VAT that a company pays, they get back in rebates. :)

Ultima Forever review

MasterNameless

@schnide I concur - I've been playing GW2 for a year now and haven't spent a single penny on all the cosmetic or faster levelling nonsense, and don't feel like I've missed out on anything at all!

In fact, I'm glad the 1%(or however many it is) do actually buy stuff though, so the rest of us can play a great game for only the cost of the original purchase. I don't feel like I have to keep playing constantly, to get the value out of a subscription, either.

Not that I have a problem with subscription models, if I want to play the game enough, I'll pay the sub without any qualms. Whether it holds me for the duration depends on the dev's continuing support (which GW2 seems to have in bucketloads - with the F2P model!).

Escape goat, haha. Is he saddled up and ready to escape at the drop of a hat? I assume he's also good at escaping over rocky terrain - even with a passenger? Goats are awesome.

On the flip side, I had a wheel with clutch (the Fanatec one), then Polyphony released a patch that required 100% clutch and 0% acceleration to change gears - or you simply missed the gear altogether and remained in neutral. That isn't realistic!

That patch ruined GT5 with my wheel. Shame, as I did enjoy it. Forza 4 instead now, which is also a bloody brilliant game. :)
