@Nion12 impossible to tell without seeing the actual numbers, but it wouldn’t be hard for them to run the store at a loss for a good few years if their other business units offset the losses.

@Nion12 it really isn’t like that example at all. PCs have always been open, since you can choose what you do with it - the hardware and software are separated. That is not the case with iPhones just as it’s not the case with consoles, the hardware and software is intrinsically linked and controlled by the manufacturer.

Microsoft will slash its own store cut on PC game sales

MMMarmite

@grassyknoll technically any company making a positive net profit is by definition profitable. In this instance Microsoft are making 12% gross profit, so their costs need to be covered by whatever that 12% equates to or they risk being unprofitable.

If your volume is high and your costs are low enough you can have a successful and profitable retail business.

Naughty Dog reportedly working on The Last of Us remake for PS5

MMMarmite

@JSF_Phantom Could be that they're remaking it with better assets and modern tech in preparation for a PC release? Seems that Sony are looking to make more games available on PC.

I'm hoping this is just a blip from Sony though, new generation jitters perhaps. I'd love more new IPs and new editions to existing series like, Jak & Daxter, The Getaway, G-Police, Sly Cooper, Syphon Filter, Resistance, etc...

Sony says PS5 game price hike reflects increased development costs

MMMarmite

@spamdangled not necessarily, Miles Morales is £70 for the "Ultimate Edition" which includes the remastered version of Spiderman.

Work would have been involved in remastering the game and the majority of buyers of that version are most likely going to be people that didn't play the original on PS4 so the dev didn't get any cash first time round.

There's no way to move PS5 games off the SSD

MMMarmite

@theonlyix they didn’t say that any drive would work. Cerny specifically said that expanded storage would come at some point once drive manufacturers were making drives that met the same performance targets as the internal drive, even then Sony would have to test and publish a list of drives that were compatible.

This additional SSD storage stuff really shouldn’t have come as a surprise to anybody, it was heavily reported on at the time.

As for storing PS5 games on external storage that is a bit of a miss, I can only assume it’ll come in time. Sony do seem to be a little on the back foot when it comes to the system software, perhaps COVID has really screwed with their software team more than they’d like to admit.

Now Apple is suing Epic Games for breach of contract

MMMarmite

@Pasco you’re confusing the cases:

- Epic filed lawsuit after Apple removes Fortnite for anti-consumer and monopolistic rules, hearing set for September
- Apple counters and is set to revoke all Epic’s developer accounts in late August
- Epic files for an injunction to prevent account revocation before the trial is heard, and accuses Apple of overreaching in trying to revoke Unreal Engine accounts
- Judge grants injunction for Unreal Engine accounts as it’s a separate account, denies injunction for Fortnite as any harm is deemed self-inflicted
- Epic’s developer accounts not associated with Unreal Engine are revoked
- Epic files a new lawsuit claiming that removal from the App Store has irreparably damaged their reputation and finances, seeks to have Fortnite reinstated on the App Store with the IAP bypass in-place
- Apple counters claiming breach of contract, all harm to Epic is self-inflicted and can be easily fixed by adhering to the contract they agreed to. Apple seeks damages for harm to reputation

You are saying that a quote from the article is a lie in reference to the original lawsuit (where Epic wants to be able to have it’s own store on iOS) whereas the article and quotes within it are regarding the latest lawsuit, (I.e. Epic wants Fortnite reinstated on the App Store with the IAP bypass in-place) ergo the quote is far from a lie, Epic do want Fortnite back on the App Store using their own payment system effectively paying Apple nothing until the original case is heard.

MMMarmite

@Pasco it isn’t a lie, there have been a few filings but the latest Epic suit and Apple’s counter suit is in relation to Epic wanting Fortnite to be reinstated on the App Store.

The monopoly stuff is due to be heard at the end of September iirc, Epic filed for an injunction to prevent their Apple dev account being closed before the case was heard but it wasn’t granted.

Wouldn't happen in a million years. EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Rockstar, et al, don't care what console you use and they aren't going to sacrifice their profits to allow you to simply switch platforms for free, when they'd otherwise get two sales. Let alone the technical aspects, how are Microsoft going to know you have a PS4 copy of a particular game?

Hyperoptic's latest broadband deal gets you 500Mb fibre for just £30 per month

MMMarmite

@Nova_Blue in the past they only serviced large apartment blocks because it was more cost effective to install their fibre to a single building with 25, 50, 100+ customers. It would appear that they are now working with some developers to build out the network on new build estates though.

I would say existing properties are shit outta luck unless they want to stump up for all the build costs.

@d0x SpatialOS is pretty much an abstraction layer for game developers to utilise cloud resources. With a £500m investment it's become a bit of a tech unicorn, so there's a lot of fawning over it, but not really any notable games released (as in complete) using it.

I've played Worlds Adrift, which uses SpatialOS but it's still in beta and had huge performance issues when I last tried it (3-6 months ago).

The problem with simply revoking keys is that you're preventing somebody that wants to play the game from actually playing it, the fraudsters don't care if you revoke keys since they've already been paid.

Everyone loses out except the fraudsters, even G2A must lose out if they have to replace broken keys sold on their marketplace.

@frazzl opinions are just that, no right or wrong answers but if the purchaser values what they've bought then it's no more a waste of money than anything else really.

Consumerism 101, if people are happy to pay the price there's no need to reduce it.
0 0

MMMarmite

@frazzl "Edit: Here's an article just to give you an idea of the margin's involved. I don't think you'll ever see that in the console business."

Those articles never include R&D costs, after sales support, software development or software service support/development so the true margin will never be as big as it looks based on just cost of goods.

The Samsung S7 Edge is £639.00 and probably only costs $200 to build so it's not just Apple. Phones have a large upfront cost but it's then difficult to make more money out of the customer, whereas consoles are low cost upfront to build the market as most of the money comes from software sales (and now online subs).

Nintendo stock stolen at A14 services

MMMarmite

@ichi_philly and that all costs money, obviously they figured the cost outweighed the risk. What evidence is there that the thieves wouldn't have robbed the truck if it was full of nappies? Sony drops pricing information from the PlayStation Blog

@spamdangled every eurozone country has a different VAT rate so €29.99 in Germany may be €34.99 in Hungary and €32.99 in France - which would lead to confusion if the blog had posted a single price of €29.99.

I think you're trying to make out that this small change is a lot more sinister than it actually is.
