Linx 8 review - exploring the sub-£100 Windows tablet experience

MENTAL1ST

@Bludsh0t civ 5 crashes during gameplay loading, unfortunately. I expect that 4 would run ok, though.

The issue is probably just memory, though, so one of the 2gb 8-inchers from Tpshiba or Lenovo wpuld probably run it ok, though they are £150+, unless there are some exceptional deals somewhere.

EDIT: Due to contrary advice below, I went back and fiddled with my graphics settings, and it does run, at 1280*800 desktop res after all with everything else turned down. I thought i'd already done that, but apparently not. I haven't played through a full games worth of expansion and tech progress, though.

I'm writing this comment on the very device in question. I got it at Christmas to try and clear some of my humble bundle / steam sale / gog / origin freebie backlog of less - demanding titles on the train journey to work.

So far i'm really impressed with it, it browses the web really nicely - desktop chrome actually has really good Windows touch support. And with a £15 usb otg keyboard case thing, plus a bluetooth mouse I already had, its a proper tiny little laptop.

The fans who would fix Tomb Raider's most broken adventure

MENTAL1ST

@FrozenHarlequin Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider controls weren't dumbed-down, they were fixed. Frankly, Core shouldn't have persisted with their awful character direction centred, block distance based setup until the end of the PSX era, let alone tried to keep it going after every single other good third-person action game had conceded that Mario 64 was the game that finally got it right.

Angel of Darkness was always going to have been stillborn because its core concept was an awful, outdated control system, and none of the ideas that Core attempted (and, according to this article, failed anyway) to build on top of it would have fixed that. Core thought they knew better than everybody else, and they just didn't.

Look at these hubristic wankers, strutting around like rock stars in arty poses, telling the world how they conceived one of the highest profile videogame flops of all time:

Female character option cut from Assassin's Creed: Unity co-op

MENTAL1ST

I've been in exactly this position, of developing what is effectively a first-generation title on a new generation of consoles, and as part of the project we found that we hadn't the memory or production team budget to put together two full sets of main player animations for both genders. So the ladies got cut. It does happen, although in the case of Ubisoft, I expect they could have stretched to the costs of mocap, fixup and voice acting if they needed to, development resources as vast as those that go into AAA game development these days weren't all in place 8 years ago.

Assassin's Creed Unity is their first shot at properly targeting the PS4 and Xbox One (and equivalent-spec PCs), and sometimes there have to be compromises in these situations. We're still in a glut of polished up last-gen titles for a reason. Next time round, they'll have all the male assets in to reuse, and another chance to squeeze in assets or adjust the design to accommodate female assassins appropriately. Brotherhood was the third game last time round, after all.

@kangarootoo I quite like it. Clearly this guy is going to be the main baddy, like the mental hispanic guy that was in Orphan Black was in far Cry 3. As soon as we have the equivalent to the old "Definition of Insanity" trailer revealed at E3, I'm sure it'll make perfect sense.

Besides, Far Cry 3 and Blood Dragon have a deliberately stylised atmosphere, which is both slightly camp, and embraces video game cliché. I think the cover fits that style.

Nintendo slumps to another annual loss after dismal Wii U sales

MENTAL1ST

@vert1go Specifically on the subject of Sony, the PS4 only needs to be doing well enough to carry Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Worldwide Studios. As long as it's doing that, Playstation will continue, even if it means that either Sony divests itself of all its other operations, or the Playstation business is spun off to be an independent company, or sold to a rich suitor like Google or Facebook.

As far as all-you-can-eat digital delivery subscriptions are concerned, downloadable games are only 'worth' what people are prepared to pay for them. And if you can guarantee enough people will pay enough money every month, you can probably beat the profits from selling them individually. ESPESCIALLY on titles that have already made back their costs years ago on other platforms that you're now offering to be played on an emulator.

You know what I think could save the Wii U? A Playstation plus type service.

If they took the effort to rebrand their whole home-console business as a 'Netflix of video games" with a £50 Wii U plus £10 a month (min 1 year) subscription which contains a massive stack of Nintendo classics from the Virtual console and year-or-two-old titles from the new system's catalogue.

I'd probably buy that, and Mario 3D World or no, I'm not planning to buy a Wii U otherwise.

@muro Basically, Microsoft stood still on its Xbox Live Arcade policies from 2005, whereas everyone else evolved following the self-publishing boom of the iPhone app store in 2008. Their response to that was XBLIG, but that was ghettoised, since Arcade was still their focus.

@kestral Well, no. But these days, for new cloud computing ventures, they usually run on Amazon AWS or some competing service, which you can also set up without leaving your house.

MENTAL1ST

Chris Roberts is producing software - PC software at that. There is absolutely zero infrastructure required to get that to market, you can put your application on digital stores to be played on hardware that people already own without having to leave your house. One might need to build a publisher relationship to get a high-profile release on Xbox One and PS4, but you can do that fully indie these days if you want to anyway.

His situation is nothing like what is required by the Oculus guys, who need to get a whole new type of hardware manufactured, distributed and sold to users.

Watch Dogs PC minimum specs confirmed

MENTAL1ST

@RicardoG It's not about upgradeable consoles (like some of the Steam boxes), it's a scalable console architecture like iPhone and iPad. Every year, Apple bring out a faster iteration of technology, but always with Arm CPUs and PowerVR graphics, often not changing the amount of available RAM. Every new device can play all the games of the older generations of device flawlessly, and old devices are kept compatible with most new releases for about four years.

It works very, very well for Apple, and fairly well for iPhone owners. The patent application shows that Microsoft are interested in getting some of that action - although I suspect they will compromise a bit on the frequency of upgrades.
10 4

MENTAL1ST

It's starting to seem like the console manufacturers have really missed the target this time round. The systems just aren't capable of recreating the new generation of graphics that studios have conceived at full resolution and frame rate.

I'm thinking that it's increasingly likely that
Microsoft's scalable console patent will come into play, and we'll see Xbox ONE (late 2015) with double the amount of shader units in its GPU and a clock speed bump in the shops Christmas after next.

@Widge That's equivalent to the available main memory on next-gen consoles, so expect 6GB or 8GB to be a standard requirement for 4 or 5 years.

It's actually gotten slightly bizarre that desktop Windows now seems to have a lower memory overhead than console OS' do.
