Epic releases Paragon assets for free ahead of game's shutdown

LittleSparra

That's really cool, in that it could lead to a fan version of sorts, right?

Fortnite sucking up all of Epic's attention (and other dev teams besides, asfaik) makes sense, but is a shame if it results in stuff like this closure - so at least they're alleviating the pain a little.

@Badoink that lazy comparison needs to gtfo. Whatever the game's attractions and woes, the analogy is rubbish and indicative of gamer groupthink par excellence.

Sea of meaning: how games have explored the ocean

LittleSparra

The sea is absolutely fundamental to my imaginative life. I am happiest near it. I love games that explore it... but curiously, the undersea, ecological world of it is a definitely distinct thing, in my mind, to the sight of it from a cliff or beach or deck. Somehow the surface and depths resonate differently for me, simultaneously. I have dived on coral reefs and that is light years away from the genuine horror i feel at the idea of being in the ocean blue, or the strange comfort I get from the sea's sound, smell, and unknowability. The edge of the world in SoT genuinely scares me to hell.

Rime is just a little too clunky for me though.

Can't wait to see the Kraken in SoT.

Crackdown on Xbox One X makes a classic game even better

LittleSparra

How was CD3 not shown in the spirit of CD1? I am not saying anything about how good it is likely to be (because we've not seen much), more bemused by the comment. What we have seen show it to bean open-world chaos-em-up against criminal gangs in a massive futuristic city, with orbs, crazy physics, and big explosions.

Sometimes I feel I'm in a slightly different reality to EG.

From the video IGN have this looks like a similar game to the first, but at 60fps? That'd be nice. Also, big zombies were in the first one. Not sure why this is less grounded, or why May 22 is 'plucked out the air' amy more than amy other date, or how a month of imminent IGN coverage sits with a lack of exposure.

Sea of Thieves' character creator won't be for everyone

LittleSparra

@Foxtrot-Oscar That level of customisation isn't actually in every MMO (and SoT isn't really an MMO as is). WoW, for instance, doesn't have it. Yeah it's ancient at heart, but they've added in so much stuff to it and haven't ever chosen to add such granular customisation.

I can see why people want sliders. Purely personally speaking I spend at most 5-10 minutes on it in games like Monster Hunter, so this strikes me as fine. Horses for courses though - I know full customisation is a really big deal for some.

LittleSparra

@mega-gazz I think you are overstating the vagueness. There are 3 clear progression paths via the trading companies, each with a different style and content. These lead to a stated 'legendary' place that then offers further, higher-challenge content. Rewards are gold and customisation options, and further content.

Layered and interwoven within this are encounters with players, the Kraken, events such as Fort raids, and conceivably other things, such as emergent quests/rewards (bottles, extra loot on islands or under the sea), and natural hazards like storms. The point seems to be there is a progression path, but there is also a hell of a let of emergent stuff that can interact in numerous ways. That is what this has over NMS, if we really have to use that clumsy reference.

That doesn't sound that vague to me.

Tip for solo players: A Sloop travelling directly into the wind cannot be caught by a Galleon. The Sloops small size beats the Galleon's acceleration, and has less drag meaning it performs better in weak winds. Trying to outrun a Galleon by sailing with the wind puts you at the mercy of the Galleon's far larger sail area.

It can be a pain to lose one determined crew though. I suspect, however, that the limited content of Alpha/Beta, and the necessarily limited windows for playing, mean some players were far more bent on PvP at any cost than they will be in the full game. Other opportunities will distract/deny some, at least, from chasing you for ages. One hopes and reasonably assumes, anyway.

@mostro It's never a truly solo game, is the point. There is always the chance for others to turn up.

Bottom line: if you can't stand any kind of MP, SoT simply won't be your bag. That said, you can play it alone, but it can be challenging.

Hero shooter Gigantic will shut down in July following mass lay-offs at studio last year

LittleSparra

Lou's comment about there being 'too many' such games is probably accurate, given the nature of playerbases.

However, to say this is generic, or bad, or that its downfall is 'good', is spectacularly unjust to this game, which was idiosyncratic, beautiful, and fun, and the people who made it. There is no fucking way this game was a 'copycat'. For every generic game, however, it appears there must be a legion of gamers who like to not pay attention and shit on stuff just because.

If any of you ever complain about why we can't have nice things, I'll be sure to say 'haha'.

Bungie is making Destiny 2 faster and more lethal

LittleSparra

You could always play other competitive shooters ;D Ones either not hamstrung in their efforts for balance by loot and unlocks, or ones that go whole hog crazy.

But anyway, hopefully Bungie get it down pat soon, as there are clearly bajillions of fans.

(edit: also, I do find it somewhat funny that D1, by virtue of not being D2, is now held up as a thing of great design. It had many of the same problems, and has the benefit of being much older, and thus offers much more content by default. That doesn't alleviate the fundemental issues it had, imo.)

Sea of Thieves is an overdue antidote to content farming

LittleSparra

@spookysocks The beta had a very limited set of 'hooks' to grasp in terms of progressing a quest or your character or ship. Hence the comments.

Then again, I really do think some people struggling to link 'having fun' with 'doing something'. 'Having' is a verb, after all...
3 0

LittleSparra

In all senses the beta is a taster, not the full dish. Datamining shows that, but so too does sense: people play the beta differently to a full game, and farming chests over and over clearly isn't the sole point of the game. Basically, if you farmed the loot cave in Destiny, this game is not for you.

And if you are in danger of being attacked, and don't want a fight, go elsewhere. It may take time to shake a persistent stalker, but it can be done. The joy of the game is that it forces you to think and act in game, not via fast-travel or XP bars or alleviating the burden by giving you super laser beam guns vs peashooters because you have more time, but by 'oh shit, a sail, what do we do? Dash for the Safe Zone? Oh, there isn't one. What do we do then?'

It will have trouble from griefers, I do not doubt, but I also suspect there will be a lot more going on around you that distracts potential idiots/might give you an advantage.
