Hearthstone changes hit many of the most popular classic cards

Hearthstone shake-up set to remove older cards for new Standard mode

I think this is a great decision overall. For new players it significantly lowers the bar to build a competitive deck, and for veteran players it ensures that things stay fresh and the meta changes year over year.

Is it too late to start playing Hearthstone?

King_of_Hyrule

Hearthstone is NOT pay to win, most legendary cards aren't even good cards. A good player can start a new account, and after leveling up the heroes and completing a few quests he will be able to build a basic zoo or hunter deck and destroy less skilled/experienced players, even if those have all the cards in the game.

Having all the cards gives you more options and it makes the game more fun to play, but it's certainly not necessary to win.

Of course experience and understanding the details of every single card helps you, but then again, isn't that the whole point of every game? If I started DOTA 2, or CSGO or whatever, I wouldn't expect to just be able to beat everyone in my first weeks. Even in games that have no F2P aspects or experience points.

People hate on legendary cards like leeroy, or gromash because they deal the final blow, but usually you don't lose because of those cards but because of the way you played during the entre game. Of course, saying "pay to win!!" when you lose is easier than trying to analyse your mistakes and trying to get better at the game.

Editor's blog: Eurogamer Sweden is back!

It's an uphill struggle for gaming sites writing in relatively small languages where most of the population speaks English. (Scandinavia/ Benelux / many Eastern European countries) I remember at one time eurogamer had TWO completely separate sites in dutch, one for The Netherlands and one for Flanders (Belgium), they consolidated those two into one after a while but even that one doesn't seem to attract many people.

Heh... Greetings.
Excited about this website, but I'm not sure what the target audience is. The people who play hearthstone casually probably don't care enough about it to search for dedicated sites, and the more "serious" players are watching pro players on twitch and sharing decks on some establised hearthstone sites.
Best of luck though!

Hearthstone: Goblins vs Gnomes review

the review mentions some type of decks that were already strong that have gotten even stronger with GvG, not sure which ones are meant? Maybe Warlock zoo with Imp-losion and handlock with the extra heal from antique healbot? I don't see any other deck being significantly strengthend

Only 0.5% of Hearthstone players reach Legend rank

King_of_Hyrule

@prolific8 Yeah the murlock decks can be annoying, still not as annoying as facing 15 hunters in a row though. Ladder these past weeks has been (insert name of your hero) versus REXXAR! Very annoying especially if you play a secrets deck.
1 0

King_of_Hyrule

@prolific8 I reached rank 2 without any legendary cards, I run 1 epic card (Avenging Wrath) and that's it. Hunter, zoolock, aggro paladin etc are very strong decks that require no legendary cards. The lack of legendary cards limits your CHOICE of decks (for example it's hard to be a control warrior without some legendaries) but not really the strength of the decks you can play.
2 0

King_of_Hyrule

Also, yes you can find deck-lists online, but it takes a lot of experience to know how exactly to PLAY a certain deck. For example in my paladin, deathrattle deck I run 2 equality cards, normally you wouldn't keep those in your opening hadn't because they are much more useful later when you can combo them with area of effect cards. But after playing many games I noticed that it's useful to keep those cards in my opening hand against warriors and priests because it negates all the healing and enrage stuff those classes depend upon. Just having a list of 30 cards and a brief description is no replacement for playing the deck often against every possible opponent, analysing why you lose, (too fast? too slow? not enough card draw? Which cards is your deck weak against and should you take out immediately when you see them? etc)

Skill plays a much bigger role in this game than most commenters here say, yes there is a random factor at work here, as with any card game, but in the long run the randomness evens out and it will work in your favour as much as it will work against you, there is a reason why top players like Kolento reach the highest levels of legend season after season, for such a "random" game the top players are actually very consistent.

With my current deck (a sort of home-made deathrattle/secret aggro palladin deck) I play much better now then I did 30 days ago. I used to struggle getting higher than rank 8 and I'm rank 2 now. The cards didn't change and the Rng didn't change, I just got better at the game.

Better tell that to Toyota, Volkswagen, Unilever, P&G, Nestlé, AB Inbev etc who all have tons of brands competing with each other

Also, clearly they want to use the Motorola brand which still has a lot of brand recognition, but they can't use that on the nexus phones which are produced by LG, Samsung etc...

Age of Empires 2 HD Edition announced, will Rome onto Steam next month

King_of_Hyrule

The game definitely holds up, in the same way that starcraft still holds up. These classic RTS games still look, sound and play great even on ancient hardware. I still play AOK regularly, it never gives me a dated or retro feel, and the gameplay hasn't been bested (not by AoM or AoE III either)

Nothing quite like casually playing AoK with a friend and suddenly see the notification pop up that he has moved up to the feudal/castle age when you haven't even started researching it, or suddenly hearing the sound of a trebuchet firing but not immediately know which part of your city is under attack. Or having an army of monks so large that approaching armies almost instantly change to your colour, or luring wild boars back to your town center so your hunter vilagers won't have to walk as far away. Or exploring the map using sheep. Or putting putting your entire army in a couple of transport ships and surprise your opponent normandy-style.

Anyway, I quite like this game :) The new textures do make the game look a little better, based on that youtube video, and the added multiplayer and resolution support will make the game more accessible to newcomers. Sure you can get those things through community-made patches but this will make things much easier for more casual players, and maybe a whole new generation of players will discover AoK.

To the people going "Woooloolooooooooooo!!" those were the priests of AoE 1!
AoK had monks and they didn't say wooololoooo they made some sort of a ringing sound of little bells when converting/healing.

Anyway this looks great, can't wait :)

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag preview: how Ubisoft plans to hook you back in

King_of_Hyrule

Kind of sad situation for the Wii U in that last frame of the "world premiere trailer" not only is the Wii U box barely visible behind the 360 and PS3 boxes, but it is accomagnied by the text "also coming to next generation consoles and PC" clearly Ubisoft is calling the Wii U a current generation console.
Still hope it will succeed though :)

As for the game, I hope it will show a more realistic and historically acurate version of piracy, and not the "pirates of the caribbean" version.

11 minutes of Tomb Raider footage surfaces

King_of_Hyrule

I am dissapointed, this looks way too linear, on ancient hardware like the PSX or Saturn Lara could explore massive tombs, you would be amazed every time you entered one of these huge buildings, and you could run around trying to find the right way to progress.

If Tomb Raider 1 was released now they would have removed all the traps and puzzles, added "Kill the T-rex" as a spoiler mission objective at the start of level 3, and then when you meet him you would kill him off in a quictime event.

Battle of the Bulge review

King_of_Hyrule

@Marrrfooo You probably mean the tyne cot cemetary? It's the biggest British war cemetary in the world but it's just one of the hundreds that you can find in the region (I grew up in that region in West-Flanders, farmers still hit upon WWI bombs every single day, the de-mining squad of the belgian army is stationed there and they need them all the time, and that's for a war fought with relatively primitive weapens almost exactly a century ago!)
You rarely see WWI war games though, (Red Barron is an exception that springs to mind) I think reliving battles like Passchendaele, even in video-game form, would be too depressing.

It's a little strange to be given the option to fight on the German side though... I mean I applaud it, since the tactics are very different, but it's a little weird to be "Hitler's last hope" in a video game.

King_of_Hyrule

As a Belgian I'll download this to get a better insight in one of the biggest battle's in our country's history (even if we didn't directly participate). We don't make a lot of videogames here (the "Divinity" RPG series, Outcast, and the strange games made by Tale of Tales are some of the few exception here) but we sure see a lot of it in videogames, since getting invaded by our big neighbours is kind of our thing. From battle of Waterloo to countless battles in WWI and WWII, such as this one for the Battle of the Bulge I've relived nearly everything in video-game form :-)
