Video: Gaming's best and worst alternative histories

War Front: Turning Point was a alternate reality RTS similar to C&C set in the second world war. It was even reviewed on Eurogamer and got a solid 7. The review itself was also very unusual, some would say lazy.

Let me get some things straight about the USK (Editors, please take note! You always get this wrong!), the USK is a pure ratings body mostly financed by the videogame industry. It can not ban games! It only rates games based on the suitability for age groups. A given rating by the USK protects a game effectively from beeing banned. They do however give out informations on the content that needs to be cut to get a lower age rating if a publisher is interested in such a thing. Now, if a game is refused classification by the USK, the publisher can still release it in Germany, but there is a chance that the BPJM gets notified by a disgrunteled parent about the existence of that game.

The BPJM is a government body that classifies media based on their harmfulness on minors character development. As in, racism, rape, strong violence and the likes. If that game contains such it can be banned from public display by the BPJM, this means it can't be displayed openly in a store, but can still be sold legally under the table to an adult.

Now, if the BPJM decides that the content is so disturbing or contains forbidden symbols it can be set to the infamous list B. Media on that list will be checked by a juristical body in Germany on their criminal offensive content, and if it is criminal offensive it will actually be banned from sale.

There are a lot of hoops a game has to jump to to be banned in Germany, and least not to forget that a publisher can object every single decision made.

The first mods for this will most likely replace the goat with small pastel coloured horses. Either that or Boris Johnson.

Thanks for clarifying that there where absolutely no top-secret midnight raids or heists. Now I don't have to imagine Tim Schafer in a tight black suit roping down from the ceiling like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible.
