Beautifully written. I bought it yesterday and, as the Green Hill zone faded into view with that familiar music, I was grinning from ear to ear. Lovely, gooey, nostalgia washing all over me.

I reckon their photo caption is the wrong way around. Surely the dude on the left (with the headphones) is 27 and the one on the right is 18? That, or one looks really bad for his age and the other looks really good!

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion pushes on despite trademark battle

JohnnyFireBlade

I could actually feel my heart rate increasing with rage as I read that. Note to self: don't buy any games produced by Rebellion as the company is obviously run by a bunch of inept monkeys (and that's putting it politely). That's got to be akin to a footballer falling over and grabbing his knee 'cos another player lightly breathed on him.

Another 62 Blockbuster stores to shut, remainder at risk

JohnnyFireBlade

I'm not a rental customer; I buy or don't buy, that's it. I've got a big enough back catalogue on the shelf to not worry about renting.

The thing is, it's people like me who live in rural areas with standard ADSL at best who are going to suffer from this. I can't stream jack, let alone in HD. YouTube constantly buffers and is a frustrating experience. If I want to download a game from Steam, I have to leave the download over night. Perhaps rental stores should look at opening in the areas that don't have super fast broadband available - they might get more customers that way. The writing's probably on the wall, but they could last a big longer if they move to where the customers are.

The Humble Rise of Humble Bundle

JohnnyFireBlade

Origin was the sole reason I didn't buy the Origin Bundle! And I think Humble Bundle's great! Just bought all the Arkham stuff on there this morning, for under £3! Shame they're Steam, though. I have access to a T1 line at work, as opposed to my 6.5Mb (if I'm lucky) home broadband, so I'd much rather download in the office and take home!

The most popular arguments in favour of Xbox One DRM

JohnnyFireBlade

As a gamer with a paltry 6.5Mb bps (max), I for one am pleased the "download only" route has been dealt another delay blow. Do you know how long it takes me to download multiple GBs of data? :O

The infrastructure is nowhere near ready to support a solely cloud-based approach, even if there were no other issues to take with it.

I've pleaded with BT to give me Infinity, but they say it's not available. So, 6.5Mb is the most I can get. :(

Hackers crack Ubisoft's uPlay security, able to download games for free

JohnnyFireBlade

Examples like this serve to illustrate why this form of copy protection (or DRM) is not a good idea. Who polices the police? At least in the "good ol' days" of disc copy protection, our personal details were happily stowed away in our heads (I know that no personal info was stolen in this attack, but how long until it is?)

Companies are never going to be able to stamp out piracy, so there's no point them thinking that they can. All they seek to do is further ruin the user experience for their customers (who are actually paying for it!)

I got Battlefield 3 for Christmas before last. I've barely played it because I had to click a link, which went to a website, which asked me to log in, which then fired up a launcher, which then went into the game, which then crashed. It's such a convoluted procedure which is 100% detrimental to the user experience.

People buy games to be entertained. If those people give up playing due to the copy protection, I suppose the company's still earned the money from the sale, but what of the reputation damage? I'm certainly not going to buy any further PC EA games if I have to go through that rigmarole again!

Ooh, sorry; got a bit soapbox there. ;)

Blizzard targets Warcraft gold sellers

JohnnyFireBlade

The irony for me with this story, is that it was originally reported by Curse. When I registered with Curse, I used an exclusive email alias which I registered just with them and no-one else. Within a few days, I received a WoW phishing email to that email address. Hence I find it a tad ironic that they're the ones reporting on the gold sellers who are likely the ones who sent me that phisher in the first place. I can only assume that Curse sold my address on to them.

I know someone who got hacked and all of their stuff sold, so I'm very firmly against gold sellers 'cos they're just tossers. I report 'em as spammers every time I see them in chat.

Indies angered by new Xbox dash

JohnnyFireBlade

Can't offer an opinion on a new dash because for the first five times of asking, the update wouldn't work and on a subsequent attempt, the 360 froze and I had to turn it off despite the warning on the screen telling me not to. :(

Hopefully I'll be able to get it sorted tonight, but I'm hoping it's not as radical as the last time.

So, everything after Sonic Adventure 2, then? That said, they must've been on drugs when they made Sonic Adventure. 2 was much better.

Lost Planet 2 "substantially underperformed" - Capcom

JohnnyFireBlade

I tried the original Lost Planet demo and opted not to buy the game because I wasn't impressed. A friend bought me Lost Planet 2 as a birthday present a week ago and I was about to give up because I couldn't find a single player option, when I finally realised that single player = multi player with bots. I then played a few missions and gave up because I wasn't impressed.

I also recently bought MotoGP 09/10, another Capcom title. It's OK, but not groundbreaking with a huge wow factor.

SFIV has been the best Capcom game I've played recently. Maybe they're just buying some bad licences.

3DTV in every home in 3 years – Ubisoft

JohnnyFireBlade

For me, 3D is a prime example of companies not considering their user experience.

My eyesight isn't 20/20 and I have to wear glasses for things such as screen use and I'm lucky, because my vision is currently only slightly impaired. Still, my eyes can't natively use 3D glasses without wearing my normal glasses underneath to correct my focal issues first.

So Ubisoft is predicting a future where I'll have to wear two pairs of glasses more regularly than the occasional trip to the cinema? Hmmm, thanks but no thanks.

I've tried out a 3D TV in my local Curry's and while it's certainly a novelty, I don't think I could watch it on a regular basis. When I get home from work, I just want to chill out and veg in front of the telly, not give my eyes more work to do having been fixed on a monitor all day.

BBC reveals Doctor Who games

JohnnyFireBlade

I dunno about you guys, but "interactive episode" or variants thereof still conjures images of the likes of 7th Guest etc. for me. Having seen the BBC's previous efforts at Doctor Who "games", I remain reluctantly sceptical. The best one they've produced so far is the Dalek game, but that's the exception rather than the norm.

I suspect the result of this will be something similar to the "Grask" DVD extra on one of the previous series' extras (but very much hope this is not the case). They need to hire me to dream the game up; it'd be awesome. ;)

"Why do publishers have to be greedy like this?"

We don't know how the pricing structure breaks down though, do we? For all we know, Mircrosoft's cut may be fairly hefty and the Introversion boys could be making a minimal profit on it. I know they're hoping the XBLA version will be a big seller though and they are relying on sales to keep making these games. Nowt wrong with supporting them, I reckon.

Star Trek Online

JohnnyFireBlade

Ah, finally. My thoughts on the game have been ratified and I know I wasn't going mad. I wanted to like STO, I really, really did. I was so disappointed. All people kept saying in the beta was "It's still in beta, STFU", but so much needed to change and it was obvious that such a large amount of work wasn't possible in the short timescale available.

I bought a lifetime sub for Champions on the strength of CoH and the promise of STO beta. Man, I feel like a sucker.

Recession or Transition?

JohnnyFireBlade

Retail's just stupidly expensive. The choices are really only Game, Gamestation or Higher than Market Value (HMV) and perhaps Blockbuster, all of whom are stupidly expensive (I know other stores sell games, but not the same selection).

For example, I bought Borderlands online for my 360. £17.95 from Zavvi compared to £39.95 in Game et al. No brainer, really.

City of Heroes wants you back

Nothing's going to make me go back to CoH, or indeed buy any NCSoft title again. They've screwed me around several times over recent years (CoH US to EU transfer didn't include Villains and eventually lost my characters) and the clincher was the last time I tried to go back to them. I'd changed my email address and forgotten my password and to log a support ticket for it, I had to log in!

Most user-unfriendly company I've dealt with in a long time.
