Tetris 99 hides the way it works - and that's brilliant

JoelStinty

Iíve enjoyed discovering how the game works too. The game is digital crack. I often stick it on for 20mins here or there but end up playing for an hour. Definitely got a one more go thing working with me. Enjoying it a lot.

One of the things I canít work out is I have had a few games where I have had ten or so lines dumped on me by a player within 10 seconds of starting, and I canít work out how. Donít know whether it is just that several people are attacking that person which is just hard luck or there is another element in play, perhaps the person Iím targeting got an all clear or something, because there is no way anybody has had the time to build up even a Tetris when it happens

Sad to see him retire but I guess everyones time comes at some point (not quite a death knell though!) Definitely not just a suit and always enjoyed his enthusiasm for games. Certainly had his work cut out for him during the Wii U era. Wish him well in retirement!

Tetris 99 might be the best battle royale yet

JoelStinty

@FireMonkey I think it is beacuse it is pretty much a timeless concept. Even 30 odd years after its original release it is still finding new ways to exist and be relevant. Not many games can attest to that, it is rather remarkable.

I think i put in over 5 hours on this already. It has got that one more go feeling for sure, the games are so quick to play but also get into. Its the perfect pick up and play title where you go through all the highs and lows of arcade gaming within minutes.

It is brutal though. I can place in the top 30 regularly now, one match i finished 3rd, the next actually 99th as i got destroyed from the very start. I think the chance of me getting a first is limited now as there are some seriously skilled players out there. It is rewarding and satisfying when you manage to fend of an attack from 5/6 other people and KO them all though. Serves them right the little bastards.

Microsoft plans Xbox Live for Nintendo Switch, mobile

JoelStinty

I think PSN earn't more than Microsoft and Nintendo made together this year. If i remember correctly, Live drove Microsoft profits to record levels last year too. Nintendo eyes probably lit up at the money that Online brought in (8 million subscribers). It is where the money is. I can see why Microsoft wants to expand this.

I'm not entirely sure what this means for us, what features we see, whether we see any sort of games for example on other machines which i think is a step ahead of where we actually are, or will be rather, but it is going to be really interesting to see where the industry goes in the next 5 years, who decides to remain insular, who tries something different, and where we actually play our games. It also seems that Nintendo and Microsoft have struck up a working relationship here that is actually quite exciting.

In praise of Celeste

JoelStinty

@Zokarr yeah you like what you like and there nothing wrong with that! And it be awesome if more people talked about the games they loved.

Thereís a weird thing on the internet where there has to be a consensus on a game. I see it on resetera a lot Ďcan we all agree thatí or Ďwhatís the general consensus oní and it does my head in. People are different!
2 0

JoelStinty

I think why so many people love Celeste is that you need to get into the game's rhythm or your own rhythm to beat it. There are going to be a fair amount of people that bounce straight off it, but for those who don't it gradually increases the difficultly with your own growth as a player so you are constantly engaged with the game. I never felt frustrated with the game, but i was challenged. Whoever designed the levels and pacing of them needs a medal.

@MrTummyGiggles I can see where you are coming from, but then we are left in a position where only 'mainstream' games get a recommended or essential, or based on appeal are we not? WarGroove review - a forensic recreation of some all-time classics

JoelStinty

@leogames yeah I think it is clear that he understands what make those games tick or work.

Weíve all played games which are technically fine but for whatever reason arenít quite clicking. I feel the same way about horizon which im currently playing, its decent but I canít help but think of other games when I play it and what it doesnít do. I canít even love it for it faults because it hasnít got much of a personality or weird quirks like just cause 2 has for example. It so pristine whereas i like JC2 scrappiness. That may seem unfair but that is why certain games like advance wars or breath of the wild are cherished and loved, and a lot of the time it are the little details that count.

Sometimes games leave you cold. It is as simple as that

Kingdom Hearts 3 review - a grand finale that's both torturous and sublime

JoelStinty

I like to see Kingdom Hearts stay around with further games and I'm sure many of its fans will, but i think it is a series that can survive without a over branching storyline. This goes for a lot of games too. We don't always need multi game epics. Yeah, bring littles nods and winks across from previous games, but i think it could really free the game up and actually become a better series for it. It just seems to me Kingdom hearts is a series that gameplay wise, and from the heritage it comes from , is perfect for one off adventures with a beginning, middle and a end.

Thats a bit harsh. It just maybe that development just didn't work out as expected. We know that Nintendo are really protective of their IP and for them to even get the nod to develop MP4 meant their pitch must have been fantastic. Sometimes for whatever reason things don't work out. It is not as though this is the same Retro that made the same games anyway.

Disappointing, but I rather that they spend their time and got this right. The honesty and openness is very welcome, although i suspect it is partially to deflate the hype, but at least its shows they recognise that people really want, and keep asking about Metroid. It's a big game for them.

Hopefully they have the original trilogy remastered for us to work though in the meantime!

Can video games save motorsport?

JoelStinty

I think the core aspects of racing - accelerating, breaking, and hitting those apex'es are all there in simulation - and the teams can read that all through data. It helps that simulation driving is a huge aspect of the premier classes and thus managers, scouts etc are going to be far more open to using 'gaming' as a way to bring in talent. E-sports seems a viable way forward for any team. Though sadly getting sponsorship to take that into real life is still a huge issue.

Motorsport isn't the only sport that are using video games to seek talent, cycling teams are using Zwift to seek up and coming cyclists too - again the data is all there (power readings). It be nice to see you guys investigate that one day. Its taken the cycling world by storm, and allows really slow guys like me to pedal squares around the same virtual tracks as pros. It's liberating (though doesn't actually beat getting out on real roads!) Though i would say Zwift as gamefied Cycling rather than working as an actual video game.

Don't think E-sports/simulation driving completely levels the entry field, money and access are still going to come top, but that gap as significantly reduced for sure. Hopefully raw talent will have a chance to flourish. Exciting times!

Video games: officially better than films

JoelStinty

I watched Honey I shrunk the kids and a Muppet Xmas Carol over Xmas with my Nephew. He absolutely loved them. Over easter planning to watch Back to the Future trilogy with him. There does seem to be a lack of family orientated live action adventure film these days.

I guess a bit like the games industry, the pool of I.P being used is getting smaller and smaller. Studios want to make a return and a profit on their investment. Think another issue is that over the last 5 years or so I.P that would traditionally be family films are actually being made for 30 Year old men or nostalgic purposes rather than a new audience. Force Awakens would have and should have been a PG, but the first scene means it had no chance. A lot of the marvel stuff too. 12A is where most of the money is. Where the largest spread of your audience is going to be. Studios know that that parents are more likely to let a kid see a 12A than those that are responsible (may seem harsh and is an assumption) and check out a film beforehand. So 15'S get diluted, and PG are 12's are pushed to get people talking about a scene or something that has happened.

Wouldn't knock animation though, personally think we are going through a golden era. So many great films across a range of different genres are being made. Song of the Sea, Kubo, Lego films, Pixar /Ghibli catalogues, My life is a courgette. Would have killed for the quality we have these days. Nice to watch a standalone film that has a beginning, a middle and a end and not part of a multi-part epic that i can't remember whose whose and whats happened.

@Drakesmoke My iPod is my life. If i lost it I would be devasted. I agree with music being seemingly devalued. Not because of its accessibility, because how i have unconsciously changed my music listening habits.

I used to stick on a album, be it cd or vinyl and be able to sit down and happily listen to the whole thing. I really struggle to do that now without being distracted, without maybe checking my phone or just being fidgety and conscious of time. I get really frustrated with it, as traditionally listening to music is a large part of my identity.

I kind of read his comments that he is talking about Nintendo as a whole rather than specifics of video game hardware. It may be in the future Nintendo move away from video games. Entertainment changes and in 30 years things could be different. Nintendo never always did video games they have a history that goes back over a century and like any company they will just adapt to the times.

I guess itís why we get weird design docs appear from time to time like this robotic legs that appeared on line last week and even their flirtations with fitness and quality of life products with the Wii.

@DoctorOak A good post. The thing is, i think in Microsoft eyes it wasn't such a huge leap. A majority of game console in the wii/360/ps3 era were mostly used as Netflix boxes. The future was pretty much already there. Maybe games weren't there as much music and films were, but the march had started.

JoelStinty

@DEV_NULL I think both physical or digital have their advantages or disadvantages. Even if you did look after your PS4 for example, it just may break down in time. In 20 years you might not be able to find another one or find a rare game that you cherish that you misplaced or just got scratched a few too many times.

It is one thing that has to be figured out by the powers that will be. I think as we do move to a digital future, The calls for games to be backward compatible are going to be heard louder and louder. Sadly a lot of gaming history as been lost to time through mismanagement and any forward thinking.

The music industry managed to navigate the march to digital (Although musicians have got a bad deal with streaming). Anything i can buy on amazon or iTunes i can play on their services. So hopefully we get there.

@Dynasty2021 I think the whole cost thing is probably a bit outdated. It is only really at launch the price difference is there. After a few months the price difference if there are any are minimal
