The new Vive Pro Starter Kit is only £1048

INSOMANiAC

@Number1Laing I never understood that, Oculus were literally paying for the game to be made! Like you say, they were the ones really pushing VR forward. Some of the launch titles for Oculus were excellent and it was down to them throwing money at it. Imagine if it had only been Vive, no proper store, no real push, pathetic.

They're going totally the wrong way with this, I know it's the 'pro' but it still alters consumer perception. Vr should be getting higher resolution and cheaper, not more expensive. The sheen has now worn off for most VR users I imagine and it needs a big push at Sony levels of pricing with some killer games. What really fucks me off with Valve is, they're a games company and they threw Vive out into the wild with a couple of tech demos and relied on everyone else to make the killer apps. Even a half life 2 vr would have been a system seller, let alone portal. They half arsed it like they did with steam machines, steam link, steam controller.

It's a shame really as they were/are always a better alternative than GAME, they give better trade in prices. They rubbed me up the wrong way with the prices they used to charge for import games but I suppose they had to make money somewhere

PlayStation VR is getting a huge price drop

INSOMANiAC

@Bruvas The money you'll likely save on the game will make up for that, or you'll end up buying even more on pc.... If I was in the market today I'd be getting one of those mixed reality headsets, cheaper than oculus and higher resolution, now is not a great time to be buying any of the big three as theyre first gen and you've got second gen out or on the way

INSOMANiAC

@Bruvas I had the oculus on PC with a 1080ti, I've been on the PSVR a few times and I was surprised how good it looked, view wise it's not that far from Oculus really, graphics wise games like Resident evil have considerable graphicaly downgrades but theyre still very playable. If I had the choice I'd go Oculus every time just because it has so much more content but PSVR certainly isnt a bad alternative at this price

Welcome to the new Eurogamer

I dont want to get carried away here but my honest opinion as a long time, daily user is this is bad. Really bad. The desktop version doesn't even work properly on mobile anymore, thats quite the achievement. This is going to definitely drive me away, sites like polygon are so much cleaner and simpler. I know people always moan at change but in this case it's justified. It's shit.

The biggest game installs: can anything top Final Fantasy 15's 148GB on PC?

INSOMANiAC

@DarkReturns Releasing a PC game on disc is already a pretty niche market, without factoring in whether someone has a blu-ray drive. PC gamers are pretty much 100% digital, it doesn't make financial sense to release a game on Blur-ray sadly

I never thought the day would come where we'd only be able to put 8 games on a 1 terabyte hard drive, but that time will soon be upon us.

Then there's the wiiu with 8gb of internal memory and a 'luxurious' 32gb model.

Only just got into Polytopia, great game, although the multiplayer needs some work, started a game with a friend only for me to start on a 2 tile island. It took us three attempts before we felt we had a fair bit of land each, theres no point in commiting yourself to a turn based online game if victory for one of you is a fore gone conclusion

played this for a while on mobile and while it's not quite as dull as it sounds, its not far off. You walk along a path swiping stuffuntil your backpack is full then you sell it, then you walk some more swiping stuff.... etc etc

As a free to play mobile game it was mildly entertaining for maybe an hour, as a Switch game for £11.99 it seems almost ridiculous to expect people to pay that much, for a fiver it may have been worth a plunge. Just my opinion of course

Kirby developer HAL Laboratory's delightful mobile game Part Time UFO is finally out in the West

INSOMANiAC

@regornam Its very simple, the controls are quite drifty as you are controlling a UFO carrying stuff, using a virtual joystick, and another button to use the crane like an arcade crane game. It's very simple to control and it's definitely a fun game. I'm more than happy to support a great company like HAL into making games that aren't laced with shitty in app purchases

It's a real shame as this game had a brilliant art style, I hope there's a great game to come at some point. They've done the right thing as far as refunding anyone who wants to get their money back but this is just a massive cluster fuck, likely caused by Gearbox saying they wanted the game to be a AAA, full price title, which probably sounded like a good idea at the time.

A day in the life of an independent video game store

INSOMANiAC

I used to own a games shop myself and buying games from other retailers was the only way for me to get games cheaply and on time. With the likes of FIFA and COD I would buy them from a tesco store, often with an offer such as 2100 microsoft points for £10 and that was the only way to make a profit. Or ordering from simply games to get the games a day ahead.

I did have suppliers but with the small number of units I was buying the profit was about £2 a game, with buying online etc using discount codes it was around £7. Absolute madness.

It was all about online passes etc at the time and ways to try and stop preowned games, and with the prevalance of digital downloads etc it was a road to nowhere. I stayed open about four years but closed just before the release of the PS4 and Xbone, I really didn't see a future in selling games when so many kids only buy the newest COD, FIFA and GTA each year and thats it. Games 'as a service' now take up so much time, and so little risk is taken in terms of gameplay with physical releases, its a totally different market to what it was when I worked for someone else during the PSone and PS2 era.

I love the humble games shop as much as anyone but they are dying if not dead, the only way forward is retro and even then people just go online.

Oculus is launching a low-cost, all-in-one VR headset next year

INSOMANiAC

@sethsez I'm not saying the resolution is ideal, far from it, but the clown who claims the resolution is too low for most people to enjoy is talking out of his arse. I've seen people thoroughly enjoy the gearvr and PSVR with lower resolutions. I liken it to the gameboy, it didn't have colour and the latest processing power but it was fun and people loved it, that's the same experience I've found people have had with current vr, I've yet to show it to anyone, or see anyone try it and them say the resolution is too low. It's not ideal, but the suggestion it too low for 'most people' to enjoy is, as I say, complete shit.

I have an oculus rift and while the resolution could of course be better, once you get into a game etc it's not noticeable. I've not seen a single person in the oculus, or vive thread on here complain about the resolution either. Nor have I seen it on reddit. TLDR, you're talking shit.
