@AlexeiSRB The two games being worked on the same time and probably sharing art teams as well, leads to alot of Bloodborne aesthetcs, assets etc being carried over to DkS 3.
I have a different perspective on the outcome this though. I think the horrific enemy designs and atmosphere in Bloodborne are tops for the series, these elements seeping into a classic rpg setting means an even richer, more unique world for DkS 3.
I always thought areas like Anor Londo, Undead Parish,Iron Keep, Drangleic Castle etc hinted at a gothic style influence, and it has usually mixed very well the traditional aincient ruins and medievil fantasy themes which I'm sure are still there.

I'd like to see the Digital Foundry articles feature a simplified chart with gold/silver/bronze marking for each system and category at the bottom of the page.
Non techie folks like myself could skip down and get an idea of performance without trying to parse through the whole article.

@spazmo except that the thought of any parity between the development talents at nintendo and the ones at microsoft is laughable. One company has been creating iconic games in multiple genres for 30 yrs, the other made a good console fps a few years back.
My point is that, nintendo does get excused from the arms race because their exclusive properties and brand of fun is unique to them, ppl will buy their system warts and all, because you wont find their games anywhere else.
When talking about the other 2 companys, heavily supported by third partys and mostly cross platform games, will ppl pay for the inferior version on xb1?

Eurogamer's Games of the Generation: The top 50

Vanquish made top 20, nice!
About UC2, the series is great in a lot of ways, but it's also very devisive I take it that it's not Eurogamers cup of tea. For everything the series does great (production values, voice acting, attention to audio/visual detail and pushing tech boundaries). It's also the poster child for the modern big budget games trying to be movies,( heavy on voice acting/story/cut scenes, scripted events, very linear etc.) though it does the virtual movie thing better than almost any other series.

Eurogamer's Game of the Generation: Super Mario Galaxy

Hi-Scores

Though I'd still say the Souls series should take the nod as GOTG, it bucks trends in modern gaming, it's a touchstone to gamings past yet incredibly forward thinking at the same time.
That being said it's hard to argue with galaxy as it was one of my faves this gen as well. I think it's biggest feat was keeping the mario series not only relevant but still but absolutely vital as canvas for creativity and fun. Amazing that Nintendo can keep reinventing the wheel after 25+ years. Also the soundtrack is legendary.

@Vanmunt It's like picking between Star wars A new hope, and empire strikes back ,I can't do it, I love em both. DkS was a more balanced and complete game though, with a number of innovations that improved the experience. Simply stating Des was better is lame, both games deserve credit

The strongest next-gen line-up from the unlikeliest source

Once more first party games start rolling out of course it will be worth buying, it's nintendo after all, and you miss out a generation of mario, zelda, metroid etc. without it. I will pick one up after another price drop or enough 1st party games arrive.
No way can it compete for core gamers money this season though, too many bells and whistles on the xbone and ps4 to check out. Even without killer software the functionality and capabilties of new tech after a long 8 year cycle is still exciting.

Introducing Games of the Generation

Demon's Souls/Dark Souls should get a gold star of some sort, even if it's not a numbered list. You can see their influence on most all AAA next gen games touting "seamless worlds" and "integrated multi player", something fromsoft was doing in 2009. Also even though I don't care for it COD has to be high on the list as an fps that could finally dethrone Halo in terms of influence/sales.

Witness a comparison between The Wind Waker HD and the original GameCube version

Hi-Scores

It's a strange game to remake since the art style of the original is timeless. My favorite 3d Zelda though, and I do like the slight touches to graphics. As someone who lives by the sea, i think the haze/fog of bloom lighting and less saturated colors make it feel more like a maritime environment than before, it feels cooler and uh.. breezier(?). Overall i like it alot.

Nintendo 2DS hands-on

@7M7 I think people are missing the point thinking its ugly, it's meant to be durable chunky and easy to access, basically a kids toy. Consider it the nerf or fisher price ds model for the young kiddies.
That being said a 3ds lite with a second analog, is what they should have made

I need to see a nintendo direct, where they explain that adding a second analog would cause the system to explode and put the company in the red. It's a pretty pointless redesign imo

Where are the Xbox One role-playing games?

Hi-Scores

@Paul_cz Well, I notice lately alot of pc players commenting on console stories, usually to chime in on how their 1000$ gaming rig has blast processing & can do the 3d pictures really good n stuff, in comparison to a $400-500 console. They will usually namedrop a certain generic, mediocre fps built as a showcase for graphics to get their point across. The whole attitude and argument is tiring, also i think the console players rarely visit pc forums.. they don't really care about pc games, they are very content to enjoy their own games (which includes alot of japanese content, jrpgs & others not on pc).

@Paul_cz ? how much do you expect in the first few months of the systems life? You're ready to judge the consoles before they are even released, let alone wait a few months for the library to develop. If you order a steak and it takes more than 5 mins to be served, do you walk out of the restaurant shouting at the waiters?

These are some of the best launch line ups I can remember in a long time. Consoles rarely launch with a tried and true killer app anymore, since Mario 64 i think, but the overall line up for both systems hits most of the major genres with solid games. Do ppl expect a new uncharted/halo to launch on day 1? it's rediculous, these games take time to make.

@Zaxlor : Agreed, that fromsoft needs no help with making their game or catering to player desires for a magic machine gun or whatever... but
this beta is to test for latency, and stresses put on their servers with thousands of players online at once. They want some feedback to work out any major online issues.

I've decided which console I'm buying this year...

Hi-Scores

Good article, ps3 definitely has alot of life left, and will probably finish out the year with the best line of exclusive titles. Last of Us , Dragon's Crown and GT6 are the standouts for me. Even into next year, the fact that Dark Souls 2 will not be showing up on PS4 or XBO, means it will also be my console of choice for 2014 most likely.

@cloudskipa Yes those were some desperate times for MS, way back all those weeks ago. It seemed they were clueless about how to launch a new console at the time, all ancient history now though eh?
Honestly , the company is either spineless, or it's run by monkeys.

The next-generation will be open-world

Hi-Scores

I don't understand the push to "open world" games. We've had open worlds for a while now, and because of the scale, they are inherently less intresting to explore, than a focused area with good level design. Wandering around saying "look at all this space!" eventually that novelty wears off for me, and turns to monotonous travel to hotspots where the actual quests take place, until you find a warp. It's great for the wow factor but game play suffers imo, I'd like to be proven wrong tho.
The souls series has been doing the seamless connected coop/competitive experience or "living worlds" since 2009. Jus sayin

@Faramis I like console gaming, put in a game and sit down or lie down on a couch and enjoy on a big screen TV with surround sound if i feel like it. Paying absurd amounts and having to constantly cross check specs & compatiblity, update graphics cards etc. isn't for me. I don't care for the extra sliver of relected light on that door knob, reacting dynamically to the environment. You don't care either, but say you do if it justifies your purchase of a 1000$ gaming rig.
I appreciate visual fidelity as much as anyone, but graphics reached a point of diminishing returns awhile ago, developers can create a believable world of anything they can imagine. Now it's all minor refinements, and it's bordering on fetish. I respect Digital foundry, but they are as guilty as anyone in perpetuating this train of thought, pc gamers seem eat to this shit up.
I like games, and convienience of playing on console above most things. But to each their own i guess eh?

As a lifelong nintendo fan, I want em to take a hit this time around. They can finally perhaps give up on the fickle casual market, start designing their games for the old fans. Lately they're using nostalgia, and incrementaly updated sequels with an eye on altering classic franchise games to appeal to mass market, all while lagging behind online in game community, multiplayer etc.
Why shouldn't a new smash bros have a full ,comprehensive, kick ass online component? Why did they dumb down the gameplay after melee?
why would nsmb wii u not have an option to play online co op with four friends?
Why have f zero, starfox been sitting on the sidelines for YEARS? most likely because they will never sell as much as wiiplay, wiifit or w/e.
I just want them to get back to creating the games they are capable of, instead of obsessing over sales or cutting corners left right and center.

@ZouZouRas I'd say welcome to the "AAA" era of hollywood inspired game design. Theres a movement away from games that celebrate interaction and "play" in the last few years. Telling stories, cut scenes, set pieces check points and voice acting are the norm nowadays.
But it's not all bad news, I'd check out the Demons/Dark Souls series for a start, and any number of great indie titles, theres still alot of good stuff out there you gotta look for it tho.

Looking at the new pics, why is it so hard for designers to make a nice looking box ffs. Just looking at the grill, vent thing on the top, makes it look like two separate halves of two devices joined together . Part matte finish, part glossy finish devided up the middle? rly? this isn't an 80's vhs player its, it's a betamax joined to a vhs player.

Alot of concentrating on tv, entertainment aspects of it's abilities but not enough game centric stuff. I don't think anyone really expected them to match sony's concise, gamer focused ps4 conference though. It was the best console unvielings ever.
Havn't seen sony's yet obviously, but this looks a bit like an old vcr, much closer to the first xbox design than 360.

Nintendo made their own bed, now they can lay in it.
I have huge respect for them as a company, they still house some of the most capable, creative minds in the whole industry under one roof. And when they put their minds to making a top quality game, they truly are in their own class.
Problem is, the Nintendo that made groundbreaking, genre defining games hasn't shown up in a few years.I'll go so far as to say they've gotten lazy with creative ideas and count their pennies with each game and console release, they make solid games and consoles ofcourse, but rarely do they go the extra mile for the gamer's dollar. Really I will always root for em as they represent pure gaming more than any other company, but i also want them to wake up and return to thier roots.
