Samsung Galaxy S7 review

GoatApocalypse

@Bagpuss as I have zero friends, I can assure you that the pleasure I derive from my S7 has nothing to do with crowds - hipster or otherwise.

It's simply a joy to use and I can afford one. I probably fall into the category of "power user" and I really appreciate even small performance gains.

That being said, the step-up from the One M8 isn't huge - in part, I expect, because the software isn't there for this much power just yet.

A new game bundle wants to give Bryan Henderson, the god who Peter Molyneux forgot, $10,000

GoatApocalypse

Worth bearing in mind that the fella won the prize entirely at random. There was no skill or effort required.

Sure, it sucks for him and it's nice that people want to show him that not all devs are cunts but treating him as though Molyneux robbed him in a bit mad.

Is Bloodborne the best game ever, or just the second best?

GoatApocalypse

@mo0trix I'm not sure how much profit exclusives make console owners in the round right now, and I'm skeptical that it will continue for much longer if it does.

I'd be very surprised if there are enough people on the fence between one console and another that exclusivity can turn profit on the scale you imagine. I could be wrong of course, or simply ignorant. But with development and production costs spiralling, reducing the number of people to whom a game can be sold is surely not sustainable in the long run?

Tldr: How many PlayStations will Bloodborne sell, and would Sony have made more money by owning the rights and selling it to people regardless of platform?

@Mr-Writer

I don't see how it's any different to how any other third-party publisher would work. Sell it on PS4, make profit, invest in port, flog on other platforms, make more cash. Microsoft would make some money, Sony would make more money, From would make some money, and everyone gets to play.

I guess I'd like to see an end to exclusives and console wars. I can't afford multiple platforms, I'm not sure how much longer the market can sustain multiple platforms and it irks me that chunks of the market are closed off.

Whether that meant the death of Xbox and PlayStation as distinct brands, I'm not sure. I think Steam machines and how they potentially disrupt the market will be interesting.

@dogmanstaruk I think the title of the piece is in reference to the author's statement that he considers Dark Souls to be the best game ever.

@KenSuggestion

I agree with your central point but there is a world of difference between owning the exclusive rights to a new IP (which always carry some risk) and buying the exclusive rights to an established, successful series.

Still, I think we can all agree that platform exclusives are frustrating and, in this day and age, I'm struggling to understand the commercial case for them. If I were an exec at Sony, I'd want to own the rights but I'd happily pull in the cash by publishing cross-platform. Surely that works for everyone?

Lack of CD playback out of the PS4 is infuriating. And I can't understand why there's no 4od app, when it's on PS3.

Why take functions away?!

The biggest issues here are that Bungie have overcharged for what is essentially very little truly new content, and perhaps more importantly, they've overpromised and massively underdelivered.

Their PR guys need taking to task over this. The product is simply not being sold as advertised.

@_tangent what I find interesting is that there's little-to-no engagement with what she says. It's all ad hominem (even if there's truth in the accusations).

@JiveHound well, the AR in Destiny is already ridiculously accurate during auto fire, even over distance. That's a buff it simply does not need at the moment.

Happy for them to nerfed it and retain the buff as an upgrade, though.

@JiveHound fair enough - but it doesn't exactly seem necessary in Destiny!

@Negotiator Because even the people that profess to care nothing for the game insist on clicking on articles. Whether you read them or not, you're essentially buying them from Eurogamer every time you click on them. Don't be surprised, then, that more articles are produced to sate an apparently insatiable appetite for them.

Oh - and not to mention, tonnes of people are playing this, and new content is being added reasonably regularly.

Face-Off: Destiny

@fastharryDOtcom who's said anything about importance? Testing visual fidelity and performance is a lot easier than making a qualitative assessment of a game that reveals more of itself over time - that's why the DF piece has come first.

Incredibly sad how many people are getting on EG's back over the review. There are loads out there already, there are a lot of insightful comments from players and EG have been clear that they want to explore the current product to the full to review the entirety of the game.

Destiny public events to occur more frequently

GoatApocalypse

@azun ok, but - maybe unlike most - I bought the game assuming that would be the case from the off. Like, I fully expected to be getting a 70% finished product (where the game play mechanics were close to 100% complete) with the remaining 30% to be drop-forged and updated following community feedback. Budgie themselves said that as soon as it launched they'd be factoring in the community in how they moved from here.

I fully expect to be charged for most of the additional story content, but I'd like updates for matchmaking and proximity chat, etc., gratis.

My big concern is that in two years they'll hit us with Destiny 2: Destiny Harder. I hope they'll essentially be looking to patch, update and release DLC for this game, and won't release a full-back sequel. Time will tell.

Does anyone else reckon the plot is designed to unfold more slowly over time? With Halo, you anyways felt part of a bigger story arc and I get a similar feeling with Destiny.

@dogmanstaruk I think they're part of one of the bounty challenges, to kill 10x Fallen warriors or some such. I found a l11 Captain in a cave to the north east of Old Russia, too. Keeps melting my face with his shock rifle; I'm going back with my rocket launch launcher and arc pulse rifle later..!

Destiny thrills, but the big picture rings hollow

GoatApocalypse

I like that it's po-faced, and don't particularly mind Dinklage's turn as the Ghost.

I'd agree that they need to do match-making for PvE. I'm longing to take on some of the missions on hard, but doing it alone is just too difficult.

I've only played about 6 hours but still on Earth and still enjoying it. At the moment it feels good, with niggling annoyances and loads of untapped potential.

But the sheer joy of shooting aliens in the face with Bungie's perfectly-crafted weapons is an unrivalled pleasure. That will have me coming back for more and more and more. I just hope they improve the co-op and matchmaking for it.

@bentaylor1 how does it hold up in shiny new-o-vision?

GoatApocalypse

@Sunsprie yeah me too. What the review doesn't capture is the sense of awe as all of this unfolded in your living room. And I loved the Flood levels, especially in co-op on Legendary difficulty.

That sense of spectacle has never been replicated, for me.
