Pre-order Thief to nab the exclusive Bank Heist mission

Gavilan

@podgek293 you can cancel it before release sure, but not once it's released. I didn't mean to just go by reviews either, you can decide by demos or youtube first 10 min gameplay footage etc. but putting money down blind to my mind is a big risk.
Also this isn't an unproven game it's based on the Thief franchise, for all we know they could just be using that as a cash cow. Until you see the goods my advice is to keep your money in your pocket. :)

@podgek293 sure if you want to take a risk go for it, but it's people like you this bullshit is aimed at. Once they have your money you have no further say. You are removing your right to vote with your wallet. It's this whole pre-order attitude that has caused this day 1 DLC crap in the first place. :(

Gavilan

@menage not sure 99% of the time, maybe 25% of the time perhaps. But it's still a risk to put money down on something that could turn out to be a bomb. Remember Aliens: Colonial Marines? That should have been the dogs...

I think people who pre-order a game have more money than sense. IMO They should wait to see what they are paying for. This kind of thing is like the publisher offering an incentive to the gamer to pick up the gun first in russian roulette.

Microsoft: Killer Instinct "the world's most generous demo"

Gavilan

Unfortunately this is all down to us the gamers, we embraced the DLC era and are prepared to carry on supporting it by stumping up the cash. I still don't understand the pre-order mentality though, why order something without knowing if it's any good? Anyway I'm waffling... but we're all accountable for this sad state of affairs. :(

What does Microsoft have to say about Sony's Xbox One "shifting message" dig?

Gavilan

My trust in Microsoft Consoles has gone down and down since purchasing my 360. Fist with the DLC (money drain), then Online Passes, then adverts plastered all over the dash. The final nail in the coffin was to try and force all the DRM shit on it's customers and make it seem like it was for our benefit. Not only that but your have only backtracked temporarily. In a couple of years time if you ever manage to get a solid user base you will start adding all the crap that you've backtracked on now. The trouble is there are still some poor gullable gamers out there that for some obscure reason believe you are doing all this for them.

Not me though. Sorry but forget it, I'm out.

Kingdoms of Amalur Preview: Action Speaks Louder

Gavilan

The loot system/interface is a lot like Dungeon Seige III which was a hard slog. Was glad when I got to the end of that game. Every other chest has an upgrade for your items. Gets monotonous fast. The demo had me in 3 suits of armour in the first 45 mins.

Gavilan

When I played the demo it did seem to me like the lovechild of WOW and Fable. It didn't seem to offer anything new that hadn't been done elsewhere. I guess if a middle of the road RPG is what they were aiming for then they succeeded.

3 3

Gavilan

@asphaltcowboy Umm blockbuster (biggest DVD rental/seller in the UK) sell ex-rental DVD's as I'm sure does a number of DVD/Blu-ray outlets. Even Gamestation stock used DVD/Blu-Ray so I don't think I am foolish at all. I think you just have your head in the sand.
As for profit on a used books the authors come out with new books which earn them money... gosh, fancy that!
They don't re-write the old book and just add a few changes to some of the words and charge you for the privilidge of reading it again. I don't understand how you can't see how your rights are being taken away from you. Even worse you are agreeing that this is a good thing. I dread to think what the future holds if people like you give up your rights so easily.
5 3

Gavilan

@deded Imagine how authors feel when they go into libraries and see their books available for free... My god what is the world coming to!!!
Games dev's/publishers are not hard done by they just have the ability to lock down their content whereas for other media like books, DVD's & Movies that's not easily possible. Basically we legally own the games we buy therefore we should be able to sell them if we so choose. Imagine buying a second hand book only to find out you have to buy the last 50 pages from the author? Dev's/publishers are not downtrodden they are just greedy imo.

Assessing COD Elite

Gavilan

Premium packs are not a trend I'm liking to be honest. It seems a lot of new games are trying to turn their franchise into subscription based services. Personally if I pay 35 for a game I want the complete thing not just the front end. If companies insist on this subscription model then I believe they should reduce the initial price point of the game to start with. Just my opinion of course.

Saturday Soapbox: Was 2011 a Vintage Year?

Gavilan

@verynaughtyboy Well it's a good job we're all different. Agreed this year had some solid games but I'm worried that next year you'll just have the same games again. Will you indeed think 2012 is legendary if Elder Scrolls VI, MW4, SR4, GTAV, Battlefield 4 and Forza 5 appear? Stale is the word I'd use.

Gavilan

A vintage year for sequel games maybe, but for originality I'd give it 0/10. It seems like every game dev in the world is resting on their laurels when it comes to inovation. Where are the visionaries of the 90's?
Don't get me wrong I love playing some of these remakes, but I'm worried that gaming is becomining a serial experience something EA have been doing with their sports titles for years. Big gaming companies are IMO too corporate these days and are only making games for the cash and not because they love games. Even Lionhead one of the most creative developers out there seems to be focusing on sequels to Fable. Sad times...
Indie developers at the moment seem to be the only ray of light on the horizon. Here's hoping next year we will see some awesome new IP's and not just another year of ever increasing numbers after game names.

Don't feel sorry for you owning a PS3, it's a cool Blu Ray player after all. ;-)

A good article which I must admit makes me glad I went the Xbox route rather than believing Sony's launch hype about it's cell processor superiority.

The fact the PS3 version has to have a mandatory hard drive installation, runs at a lower resolution and suffers lower frame rates kind of says it all. Of course this could be that Rockstar haven't got to grips with programming for the Cell still, but they delayed the initial release of GTA IV due to the Sony machine anyway, so they should have been able to get their heads round coding it by now.

Add to that Achievements, Xbox Live multiplayer and DLC to follow, the winner is clearly Microsoft here. As for the warmer hue, well my TV has hue adjustments so can't really say that's a big deal.

I do genuinely feel sorry for anyone that fell for Sony's spiel about them having the superior console.

Anyway the game rocks, and we can all enjoy it, that's what counts. :-)
