Griefers or saviours? The Elite Dangerous players causing a rift in space

Gammerz

I know nothing much about Elite, but it seems that allowing commanders to change their name is preventing them from being targetted and punished. A fixed commander name would then make players answerable to their actions. By disallowing this, it's holding back the player-created story elements of the game (i.e. a war, policing/posse etc.).

Exploding barrels, x-ray vision, target markers: no thanks.

I want accurate kill-shots to the body, cover obscuring targets (as it should) and I want to have to scan the area carefully for targets, not have them pointed-out for me.

All signs point to a PS4 price cut in the UK today

Gammerz

If EG are to advertise the price cut of a 500 GB model, they could at least show a screen shot of one (not the 1 TB model, with a "Tempted?" title)! I expect more people would be tempted if this were the 1 TB model's price!

Gammerz

@penhalion Yes, it's a bit like generating a Minecraft map very quickly (but only the parts you can see) every time you land on a planet. This extends to generated solar systems, fleets, animal shapes, ship designs - the whole game is procedural - and is discarded when you leave the area.

My repaired X360 failed outside its 1 year warranty. Had 2 wired controllers fail too due to cable breaks. My PS1, PS2 consoles and wired joysticks still work. That's one of the reasons why I intend buying a PS4 instead of X1 - I don't intend rewarding hardware failures.

New study suggests link between gaming and neurological disorders

Gammerz

From gaming, I have learned that the systematic method of following one wall (left or right) will lead you to the exit, without taking heed of any landmarks.

Also, when playing text adventures, many mazes had identical twisting corridors, so moving east followed by west wouldn't bring you back to the original location. So new strategies had to be devised: dropping objects and exploring all possible route combos.

So gaming taught me to throw out any realistic spatial methods in preference for systematic (and more challenging) response methods.

Having once been lost in London, I couldn't locate my local landmark, the massive Battersea Power Station, because all the roads were lined with tall buildings which obscured my view. Solution: find a main road and catch the bus home!

Eurogamer has dropped review scores

Gammerz

Scoring systems have their uses though: "When searching for reviews in Google, however, you will still see star ratings attached to Eurogamer reviews: five stars for Essential, four for Recommended, one for Avoid, three for everything else. Google is a very important source of traffic for us.."

There lies the reason: people are going straight to Metacritic and avoiding Eurogamer. Strategic if slightly hypocritical.

@dirtysteve Yeah! The vague details (star colour, planet numbers, types, sizes etc.) taken from astronomical data, using procedural to pad out the details using facts as a starting point. Exactly as they have with this sim.

DICE ponders: what did people really like about Battlefield: Bad Company?

Gammerz

Single player was open and not corridor driven. The maps were more open, with lots of vehicles dotted around.

But I'm fed up with modern combat; Bad Company and Battlefield are too similar - let's have a full release of 1943, or a WW2 variant, as we've not had one of consoles, yet.

World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition review

Gammerz

Been playing since the start of the beta and I think it's fantastic. This is so addictive that I switched from playing Battlefield 3! In comparison, WoT feels like a sim: the tanks have specific hit locations that can be damaged/destroyed (tracks, crew, guns, engine, turret, ammo rack).

Tanks (including destroyers) have different roles and feel very different to play. Some light tanks move so quickly around the flanks that they're very difficult to hit, especially by larger tanks with slow turret rotations. Before you know it, they're slicing their way though your artillery at the rear.

There are lots of tutorial vids on XBL: watch them to get a better idea of how to play and the various subtle features.
