Black Friday deals hit Xbox Games Store
|
Anyone know if there's any compatibility issues between digital and disk-based versions of Xbox games like there is sometimes on PS3? Thought I might pick up Fallout 3 again after trading in the 360 disk, but probably won't bother if I have to start the game over from scratch. |

EA putting micro-transactions "into all of our games"
| If they implement micro-transactions like they have done in Dead Space 3, then fair play to them. Two-thirds into the game, with fully specced-up rig and guns and I've not had to pay for anything. In fact, collecting the ration seals has allowed me to 'buy' two of the most expensive resources packs without using my own money. |

Devs slam Hitman: Absolution promotion that invited you to identify female Facebook friends by their "small tits" and then kill them
| @darkmorgado By that reasoning we should ban the whole internet then. It is, after all, just a tool... |

|
@darkmorgado But you're making an assumption here that that's what it would be used for – and that is a wild assumption to make. These things are designed to be shared between friends on social media, friends who take the piss out of each other, who wind each other up and generally give as good as they get. The slight possibility that at some point, somewhere, someone might use it as a tool with which to bully someone shouldn't be a consideration. It's a very similar argument to the one that says videogames are murder simulators. That is, a piece of entertainment crafted for sensible-minded people might be misused by those of a slightly more wicked disposition. A world where everything is sanity checked to the point at which it can't offend anyone isn't the kind of world I'd really want to live in, and I'm sure you'd agree. So people calling for this stuff to be banned, for the people who made it to lose their jobs or to kill themselves really do need to get a grip. |

The liberal hand-wringing that crops up on this site every now and then really is cringe-inducing, and that's speaking as a liberal minded sort of person. Yes, it's tasteless, yes it's unnecessary, but you know what: so is the perk in Far Cry 3 that allows me to leap off a rock and knife two people at once in the head. But that's a 10/10 experience so I suppose it doesn't matter. At this rate, we're going to worry the fun and stupidity out of videogames – but at least than they'll be taken as seriously as books and films, right? Happy days! |

Brathwaite's Old-School RPG Kickstarter terminated ahead of time
| @spongebob Leaving aside the fact that I was wrong, I do think Kickstarter will be more susceptible to a loss in confidence from a fairly limited number of failures because it is so consumer-facing. |

Not good news for Kickstarter, I would have thought. That's two in two (working) days. I know there's always risks to investment, but that's why you tend to get a professional class of investors - people who have the money to take the risks and gamble and make more than they lose. Actively targeting consumers as investors, though... Won't take many failures to put them off investing at all, I reckon. |

I'm not going to get all worked up over the repeated delays to the release of PSN content in Europe, but surely EG could tap up Fred Dutton or someone else within Playstation to talk about what is, essentially, an ongoing, monumental and embarrassing commercial fuck-up. Or if not EG, then Gamesindustry.biz – either way, it would be good to see some games industry journalists do some digging on this. |

Skyrim patch 1.2 has resistance-breaking bug
|
Just to add my two pennies: Updated with the patch, fought my first dragon (the very first). No backwards flying. I'm a level 20 warrier, 40% fire resistant and noticed that two sustained bursts of dragon fire on my character would bring me to a level where I'd need to heal. Can't say whether that's unusual or not, having never fought a dragon before, so not sure whether my elemental resistance has been affected by the patch. It didn't feel unfair though. I'd imagine dragon fire is pretty hot. The only real change I noticed was that the game seemed to look better than it did pre-patch, even though I've only ever run it from disk so didn't experience the texture load issue. |

Alan Wake: The Writer
|
Played and completed last night. It was a better experience than The Signal and for that I'd rate it higher than Teti has done. But the man has a point about Remedy's timidity in not moving the story on past the ending of the main game. Ultimately, I was happy to have more Alan Wake but they should have had more balls in giving DLC purchasers something additional story development-wise. |

Relic dev died saving wife and child
|
@retroid Just wanted to say, good use of the ban hammer. Some of the comments in this thread were downright distasteful. Yes, yes, thousands of people are dying every day around the world, many I'm sure in more tragic circumstances than Brian Wood – doesn't mean his death shouldn't be noted and his widow shouldn't be given the chance to publicly eulogise the man she loved and lost. I fear for the human race when people can't even summon one iota of sympathy for the premature death of a dad-to-be, whoever he is, wherever he is and however he died. |

Fallout 3
|
E3 video looked aces. This preview, worrying. But really, if you were to play a half-hour demo of Oblivion from the moment you left the first sewer, you'd be underwhelmed too. I know I was. "Sure the view's beautiful," I thought, "but am I really going to be spending all my time looking at the ground wacking crabs and wolves with a shitty sword." Didn't stop me putting more than 30 hours into the game, though. |

RedOctane admits to Guitar Hero II patch problem
| I got a brand new 360 Thursday after my old one kept freezing and crashing. Saturday morning I played Guitar Hero for about two hours after the download and it worked fine. I quit out of GH to play GRAW 2 and I got the Ring of Death. After that I booted it up again and all worked fine. Weird! |
