Xbox 360 saves carry over via Xbox One's back compatibility service

Emulation of the 360 on the PC has had a significant boost in the last couple of months demonstrating that it's possible.

Congratulations to MS, can't deny that it'd be nice to know that I could play the PS3 exclusives on the PS4 when I get around to buying one.

PS4 China launch gets green light for this month

DodgyPast

Despite a thriving pirate market for Xbox 360 there were plenty of places selling the PS3 in Bangkok as there was enough demand for online support. Without the cracked 360 the PS4 is doing signicantly better. While the vast majority can't afford these consoles there's a big enough upper middle class to make it more than worth it.

Valve announces the Source 2 engine, which will be free to developers

DodgyPast

Is Source 2 going to be supported on consoles? Multiplatforms engines was one of the factors that helped the PC sneak up on consoles by making releasing multi-platform games on PC a no brainer. Like the idea of the steam link though I want DNLA support as well, and I doubt that will happen. So a solution like a shield box might be better. So oddly it's the controller that excites me most. More games playable from the sofa.

It's just the retarded American laws on the internet, by spamming the DMCA as a club these scummy agents of copyright holders can take down anything they want. Leaving the onerus job of proving that it's legal to the little guy with no resources. This time it was high profile but usually it's not.

New Steam controller design leaked

DodgyPast

The amount of idiocy is very high, probably because the idea of having a control pad designed for strategy games that can be used in addition to a classic dual stick according to the game your playing is beyond some people. I'd pick one of these up for Civ / Xcom type games and maybe for a relaxed RTS game on the TV then swap to the 360 pad which pretty much all PC gamers have already for the console style games. After all, PC controllers aren't obsoleted every generation like with consoles.

Sorry, Microsoft, but you can't own Minecraft

DodgyPast

I would like to know how long Notch plans to stay there now. Personally pretty uninvolved with minecraft, but since it brings so much happiness to so many people I hope that MS see the value to their brand not pissing anyone off could have. By ignoring other platforms there could be short term gains but gamers on other platforms are potentially future customers and given MS's long view that 2bn could be worth it just for the positive spin. Sadly MS internal politics so often mean that long term benefits are often destroyed by leveraging them trying to achieve some other goal.

That authorising a single payment allows further payments without confirmation for an unspecified amount of time after is extremely dodgy, and something I wasn't aware of. Dinosaur adventure The Stomping Land removed from sale on Steam Early Access

DodgyPast

There's no guarantees with these games, so what... Nobody is trying to hide that and obviously there'll be unscrupulous, incompetent and unlucky devs that don't deliver. But as purchasers we know those risks and it's up to us to judge where to spend our money. Personally I've invested in the Next Car game because I enjoyed the flat out games so much I felt it was worth the risk.  Assetto Corsa because I'm prepared to gamble in the hope of them delivering... And the positive buzz regarding the Early Access seems to be building enough momentum to succeed. Finally I grabbed the Total Annihilation follow up when it was on sale.None of these games would be made without this model, yes there's a risk of dissapointment but on the other hand there's some great games wouldn't be made without it which benefits both the risk takers and those who wait for a final product.

Valve is being sued by Australia's consumer rights commission over Steam's refund policy

DodgyPast

I've had 2 or 3 refunds off Steam after emailing support, once so I could take advantage of a pre-release price decrease and the other due to the software refusing to run on my hardware.

They didn't make a big deal out of it nor did they make me jump through onerous hoops though they did state these were one offs each time. ( probably to avoid setting a legal precident )

I think they do it as a mixture of providing reasonable customer relationship management and also trying to avoid a huge backlash that would create a more powerful movement to force them into more reasonable T's and C's.

Nvidia Shield Tablet review

DodgyPast

This isn't the model for me, my current combination is adequate enough that I don't need an Android performance boost but I will want one in the future and something with a enough power for decent 1080p emulation / gaming locally while also having streaming capabilities to play PC games locally will be very handy especially with wireless networking improving so much. If been impressed by the streaming functions in Steam already. I do think that we're approaching a point where we can stick a central gaming stack anywhere and access it remotely. Not going to happen this gen but it's not impossible to imagine consoles adding this as a feature next gen.Can see myself buying into the next performance boost model and being relaxed about being tied to making my next graphics card for my PC a nVidia one.

First Total War: Rome 2 patch out this Friday

DodgyPast

They're always buggy on release because it's a hugely complex piece of software that must cope with a huge range of variables compared with a tightly designed game such as "Last of Us". Testing it fully is at least an order of magnitude more difficult and the only financially viable way to release this kind of game is to rely on the players feedback to polish it. Which they always do... I'd be complaining if CA had a habit of abandoning there games but they don't.

Microsoft will "aggressively challenge" any government attempt to use Kinect for snooping

DodgyPast

They probably are required to store a certain amount of data by law. Reality is obviously MS don't want to do any of this but they have to do what the US government requests them to do. Unfortunately the US government has mandated that everything surrounding their data collection must be secret so there's no way for anyone to know what how they'll demand to be able to take advantage of Kinect.

Nvidia's Project Shield to cost $349 in North America

DodgyPast

HDMI out and USB in means in theory could use it to play PC games anywhere in the house. For me the 720p limit is the killer, plus I'll be interested to see what the latency is like in the real world. Seems more like an attempt by nVidia to get the tech out in the wild while they're still perfecting it. It's probably priced to cover manufacturing and R and D for the device but not for the actual streaming tech.

I'm always interested why people want to waste their time slagging off what others enjoy doing. Even if it's not for me who am I to judge others that have found something that they love doing. Must be terrible to be so upset by something that has no effect on your life. I suggest you find something positive that you enjoy rather than feeling the need to belittle others in order to falsely inflate your own ego.

As Valve confirms the Steam Box, Microsoft's Phil Harrison issues a warning

DodgyPast

They need to learn from MS if they want to succeed.MS bled money for half a generation before the 360 and then bled again for a year to maintain their reputation despite the hardware problems. That much commitment did win over gamers, valve have a better headstart in terms of customer loyalty but that's negated by how much harsher the gaming market place will be.If they show unflinching loyalty to Linux whilst losing bucket loads of money for a few years they may claw back enough of the market...but it'll take that kind of dedication to create a market worth EA and Ubisoft producing games for.
