Layers of Fear taught me how to be scared again

Doctor_What

Many people wouldn't think of fear as a healing thing, but sometimes we need to experience silly fear to help us cope with the seriousness of life. Thanks for writing this article!

(Personally I didn't find Layers of Fear very scary, but I nonetheless enjoyed it - it's like an old fashioned creepy story, where 'dread' is the goal rather than 'fear', so the more obvious scares detracted from the overall tone. There was enough good atmosphere and tricks to keep it fun though!)

Video: The Best Sex I've Ever Had (In Games)

Doctor_What

Good video - sex should be treated the way it is in real life: diverse, weird, normal, brilliant, casual, heart-breaking... Pretty much the main option around at the moment is 'wallpaper', and that's the only thing it really isn't between real people.

Why we need more developers like Zoe Quinn

Doctor_What

Why do people keep on saying that Quinn orchestrated an attack on The Fine Young Capitalists when even they admit they were wrong in accusing Quinn of the attacks on them?

http://www.thefineyoungcapitalists.com/PeaceTreaty

The fervent need to disbelieve everything she has ever said (including protesting her innocence on the attack on The Fine Young Capitalists) looks kind of creepy. Just sayin'.

@Sildur You do know that even The Fine Young Capitalists admit they were wrong in accusing Quinn of the attacks on them, don't you?

http://www.thefineyoungcapitalists.com/PeaceTreaty

Taking your main source of material for her life from her ex-boyfriend's blog probably isn't going to give you the best overall view of her behaviour, and accusations are not the same as reality.

For example, Quinn was accused of 'sexually assaulting' a guy at Phil Fish's wedding. When pushed on this, the ex-boyfriend's story changed to 'he said she made a passes at him'. I hope you agree that there is a significant difference between these two things, and listening to his first version would give you a very misleading impression.

http://i.gyazo.com/c36d15ccedac70f0f0f3cc8e433df79c.png

The background of all this seems to be that certain people on the internet had their beliefs in how a woman can be successful in games confirmed by the accusations of an angry ex-boyfriend, and so they were swallowed hook, line, and sinker. Did she cheat on him? Possibly, but frankly it's none of my business, and perhaps *he* isn't exactly a saint either, which again really isn't any of my business. Did she sleep with a journalist? Possibly. Was she the first or last developer to sleep with a journalist? Certainly not. Is that ideal? No, but it is human and it's never going to stop.

In the end, Depression Quest is a hobby game that got a lot of attention for trying something new. It's not perfect, but it definitely is interesting and worthwhile talking about. People would have talked about it, including journalists, whatever Quinn's personal life is like.

Her personal life is likely similar to that of many people in games development - we date colleagues, and we go out with people with shared interests. Why is Quinn's life such a talking point then? What makes her sex life fair game but the sex life of others remains undiscussed? It looks like many people *wanted* her to be a horrible person, when actually she's just a normal, flawed person like everyone else. The only differences that I see are that 1) she's a woman and 2) she's openly feminist. Given those two differences, I find it hard to believe that this scandal was actually about journalistic ethics, and more about slut-shaming and anti-feminist rhetoric.

I really enjoyed this game. It was great to see a gaming metaphor for real world concerns. It was almost a shame that the supernatural element was in there - it could have been really nice if it were simply one guy's nightmares.

I hope more developers try this kind of thing.

This is what the Heavenly Sword movie looks like

Doctor_What

I hope they rethink the characters of the antagonists - Nariko's side were mostly stern, earnest, and generally a serious a sensitive bunch, and the antagonists were like pantomime villains. It was a bit like watching the cast of The Last Samurai go up against Widow Twanky. Fun game mechanics, but the incongruity between the characters really undermined the whole experience for me.

The play's the thing

Doctor_What

Interesting article, but I don't agree with almost all of it!

Few sensible people are saying that Gone Home is *the* future of games, only that it is part of a developing genre of interactive narratives. We've not had many things that feel like a new genre for a while, so perhaps we've forgotten what it feels like to have something new. We're in a renaissance for 2D platform games, but no-one is claiming that everything will be going 2D.

Blaming stories for poor gameplay is incorrect. In every studio I know, and every narrative designer I have talked to, if a section of a game has brilliant and incredibly important story elements but plays badly then the section gets cut and the writer simply has to fix it. If you feel that gameplay is getting worse, then that is most likely a result of market forces moving the target audience away from games journalists and hardcore game fans towards a more casual audience with different expectations, rather than story making games mechanics worse.

There was an interesting talk at the GDC this year from 343 Industries about the new species in Halo 4. They created lots of cool abilities but the species still felt unfocussed and not fun to fight. They brought in narrative designers to create the background of the species and they only kept the abilities that matched the vision of who that enemy really was - instantly the game felt more fun to play. By focussing on creating a coherent enemy that matched narrative and gameplay requirements they made a better game.

What the trend towards stories might be doing is pulling attention to titles that are mechanically less exciting and away from bland-presentation but mechanically exciting games. The result of this would be the perception that games are getting worse because of stories, but in reality it is actually that games journalists aren't looking hard enough to find the best games and instead are only talking about the ones with the most publicity expenditure. So... Whose fault is that? It's not the writers or developers (both of whom will be trying their hardest to make an awesome game experience), but it could be the publishers, or it could be journalists. If EG thinks there is a problem here, then they can be part of fixing it.

Lost Planet 3 review

Doctor_What

Done right, there's huge potential here. The basic tech of the game is solid, but it sounds like they've completely failed to make it feel like there is any meaning behind any of it, and they're so afraid that the player might get bored they give them something to shoot every minute. The bizarre plot twists of Lost Planet 1 didn't help the franchise much, but I can see why people still have faith in this at a publisher level and gave it one more try... But after this I doubt we'll see it again for a long time.

Boob Jam is a game jam about breasts

Doctor_What

Cis and trans are necessary when you need to be specific about things. It's all about context. Without the right terms then society can't discuss things without getting confused. It's as simple as that.

Also, on topic, Boob Jam sounds like a great idea (although also somehow unhygienic when taken out of context).

Forget the Dead Island: Riptide pre-order incentives, what's happening with that awful Zombie Bait bikini torso edition?

Doctor_What

Making a male torso too wouldn't balance this: saying that fails to appreciate the male privilege that is hugely dominant in Western society. (Google 'male privilege' if you aren't familiar with this concept.)

In essence, to to historical and cultural context, a topless guy is not sexualised and fetishised in the same way that a woman in a bikini is. Pretending that these things are equal is both idealistic, disconnected from reality, and almost wilfully ignoring the difference that the male gaze has over culture. It's not surprising that people get offended.

Saturday Soapbox: Defining PlayStation 4's games

Surely I can't be the only person who liked Fantavision? At the time it seemed a very strange launch title, and admittedly it probably didn't justify the full-game price, but it also set out the manifesto that Sony wasn't afraid of releasing things that were a bit experimental, a bit weird, or oriented more towards the experience than the adrenaline.

I went back to Fantavision in the later days of the PS2 and found a game that wasn't as I remembered the first time - it was a lovely, relaxing action-puzzle title with slick and amusing presentation. In many ways it was a direct precursor of the titles that we see available for download now. In that regard, as a launch title it was incredibly forward-thinking, we just weren't ready for it as an audience.

Another 37 HMV stores are to close, bringing the grand total to 103

Doctor_What

I have a friend who works in one of those stores, and it's one of the few HMV shops that has consistently made a good profit, even in these hard times. I wonder what their rationale for the closures was if profit wasn't the main factor.

Sad times, I'll miss the stores from my childhood, but it's a real bastard of a time for my friend and his colleagues - there's almost no work available for retail staff at the moment, and even less that pays a livable wage (not that HMV was great on that scale either, but it was better than nothing).

THQ is no more. This is where its assets went

Doctor_What

THQ were awful in the 90s - seeing their name on a SNES box was a sure sign of dross inside, but this gen then have impressed me with the humour and passion in the games.

... Then again, I hear they were still awful as publishers to work with, so it's best for the studios to be freed into a new (hopefully better) system.

I can't believe no-one picked up Vigil though - that's insane! Darksiders is the only competitor to God Of War for polished brawler action/adventure, and it's multiplatform too. To let that slip completely is crazy!

@GamesConnoisseur Yes, you can create different accounts, but then you wouldn't have all your downloads on it. What MS have done is allow people to move countries without losing those downloads.

I have a PS3 and have moved countries, so now I can't buy anything on my credit card anymore because the credit card's address is no longer the same country as I first registered my account. It's pretty annoying, so kudos to MS for fixing this and I hope Sony follow suit.
